I don't think many women on here have a lot to celebrate in regards to menopause.
I think most of us wish it had never happened. :'(

But, I get your point, about information, treatments ect......
Just wish doctors and alike, were more interested in it...
Instead of just saying it CAN be ALL in the mind!  >:(

I don't think it's anything to be happy about,it's a bloody nightmare for many ladies on here.

Yeah likewise - I'm not celebrating. There was a very good phone in on Radio 5 between 9 and 10 this morning - a friend told me about it and I listened on iPlayer this afternoon. If I'd known at the time I'd have phoned in myself. Some very very familiar stories on there....There's also a petition started by Diane Danzebrink circulating - link below but I'll start a new thread with it on too.

Ooooo lovely, thought I might celebrate by counting and categorising (a good stock-take) my sanitary products of all possible sizes and varieties, that'll keep me busy for a few hours.

I don't get why this is about 'celebrating' , can't it just be awareness-raising. I'll drop out of the balloons and cake if you don't mind....but re-join the party when this is all done and dusted...as my deep dark mood swings and despairing crying are not in the 'jolly' category right now.

Can't think of any situation where 'menopause' and 'celebrate' can go in same sentance... :(
Bit like 'birthday' and 'celebrate' now.

It might be a royal pain in our back sides (and all other front back and sides! - and lord knows how many years I have lost to depression and hot flushes)... but yes AWARENESS is key... and the fact that we are gradually being heard... if only a little at a time... it IS something to be celebrated. The more noise we make in celebrating our changes the more we will be heard

So - Happy Menopause Day ladies :foryou:

No ones going to shut me up trying to get heard ;)

There was an item on women's hour on radio 4. They should have devoted the whole programme to it instead of 10 minutes.

Why is it whenever I've watched or listened to someone's show about menopause they ONLY EVER talk about hot flushes! It gets me so mad!
There's so, so, much more to it than just hot flushes, as we on here all know.

Michele Keaton today has said more in the paper.
She suffers debilitating anxiety, brought on by early menopause.
Why can't more celebrities come out and talk about it, if it's them that's got the voice to be heard? They use celebrities for all kinds of stuff, why not for this.?

......yes! In actual fact, its the only symptom (the flushes) I don't get! (but I'm on venlafaxine) Everything else on the standard late-peri list is there in shed-loads.

Funnily enough, and not related to radio2 or even knowing it was world menopause day, I mentioned to my Mum on the phone earlier a few things that I was struggling with. My Mum never talked to me during her transition, neither did her mother to her, and neither did anybody talk to anybody else about anything to do with it. My Mum, said 'in my day we just didn't talk about this part of life, it was in the shadows and nobody knew anything, what to expect, it was taboo'. She then added how good it was that now women felt free to be open about the changes they are experiencing. So......that's gotta be a great thing.....

Blot, to be fair they did a whole week on the menopause on Woman's hour only about 6 months ago.

Sorry I didn't know that racjen.

Yes gps need educating first. They are the ones we go to in the first place and if they have no clue then what chance have we got?

I know I was lucky, but I spent yesterday at Dr Louise Newson's new clinic for her Menopause Open Day.  It was really good.  I used to go to London for my HRT but as soon as I heard she was opening up in Stratford-upon-Avon (just 1 hours drive) I was on the books, hoping for an appointment and I got one in the summer.  The day was full of speakers doing different things in different rooms.  Lots of opportunity for the women (and a few men with their partners) to ask as many questions as they liked.  All barriers came down and people were laughing and asking questions about everything.  One of the nicest things was meeting other women.  All different ages, shapes and sizes.  Many glamorous and some (me) less so!  All of us interested in each other and our experiences.

So for me World Menopause Day was a very good experience.  I had 3 questions about my ongoing treatment (notably those I posted recently when my GP stressed me out) and I was able to talk to Louise and ask her them.

1.  My GP want's me to come off oestrogen because she thinks it's pushing my blood pressure up.  She's not right is she?
2.  I've been bleeding a lot in the last 3 weeks, will it stop or should I change anything? (I have had a scan in the summer so we know there are no issues there.)
3.  GP wants me to take AD's and I don't want too.

The answers were "No, no, oh dear no!", "Not enough progesterone, try increasing the dose, either by doubling up on the every other day routine or by taking 100 Utro vaginally every night.", "You don't need AD's at this stage.  You probably need more oestrogen."

Then later on I spoke to another of the doctor's at the clinic about my thyroid issues and she agreed that my BP should come down as my medication levels get better.  She actually sounded sensible about thyroid, dissing the wide reference ranges.  She was pleased I had an endo. referral next week as my GP is less than clueless over the thyroid.  It was a great day.  I felt so much less alone.
