I have had to stop taking HRT as could not tolerate the Progesterone part so am always looking at diet/lifestyle changes/alternatives to help with the symptoms.
Recently, my knee pain was becoming unbearable - having to pull myself up the stairs using the banister at 51 years of age!!!
A friend of mine (who has her own livery yard and uses it on her horses) suggested turmeric paste. I've been taking half a teaspoon for about 3 weeks now and I can't believe how much better my knees are. I wouldn't say the pain has gone completely but I really do hardly notice it at all at the moment.
That's it really. Just wanted to share something positive. I found the recipe for the paste on Turmeric Life - think it's an Australian website.
It's working for me, so might work for others.
-
It's an old herb? used in powder form in lots of oriental cookery. It stains too ;D. What's wrong with trying it? Maybe keep a diary of your actives, diet etc. ?
Do you eat it 'raw' off a spoon ? :-X

Hello heidif67,
Great post, thank you. I also take turmeric capsules, prescribed by an overseas Rheumatologist for osteoarthritis. I have noticed some improvement but it makes me bleed easily from minor bruises. I have decreased the prescribed dose and now it seems to be working without this side effect.

I also make the paste for my hubby and I have started taking it, doesnt taste great but does the trick.
-
Any bruising should be examined by a Doctor. It should not be a side effect from anything we ingest but can be a sign of leukaemia !

Hi CLKD,
Don't worry, turmeric can slow blood clotting. That's actually good for me because I have hereditary thrombophilia.

Learns something every day I does :foryou:

You're welcome :great:

That's brilliant, Heidi! :)
Strangely, I was chatting to my taxi driver about this today who was a lovely man who is very into Ayurvedic medicine. We swapped lots of tips. Tumeric is simply marvellous for inflammation.
My top tip for those that can't take HRT are the adaptogenic herbs that support the adrenals - most specifically Aswaganda. If you're interested, go and have a 'google' - there is a lot of info out there! I favoured the Pure Veda range as they use absolutely no fillers or solvents in their supplements or production process. xxxx

Aloe Vera products are supposedly good but apparently taste foul ::)
-
Hi again..
CLKD ... I stir it into about an inch of hot water and neck it back as quick as I can. Then clean my teeth ;D There are all sorts of ways to take it on the website I mentioned, but the hot water way is super quick, no fuss! I have a really good friend who swears by aloe vera. She starting taking it in her very early 20s and doesn't have a wrinkle on her!! I hate her with a passion ;)
Connoly ... I haven't noticed any extra bruises from taking the paste. Will monitor it - thanks.
Tempest ... Thanks for the tip - will certainly look into it. I am honestly staggered what a fab job the turmeric is doing so am certainly open to trying adaptogenic herbs.
In the meantime, I'll keep taking my soya / flaxseed / banana smoothies & whacking down the magic yellow paste. It all seems to be working much better than I thought, and having a positive attitude certainly helps.

I started taking it for tendinitis, nothing else but was making much impression. I was surprised how effective it is, I've had no pain for about a month now. I put my old dog on it for her arthritis & she was bouncing about again. Good stuff.
I add the optional cinnamon & pop a frozen lump into my coffee. Actually tastes quite nice like that.
-
suziq99 ... Great stuff.... Glad it's working for you too. ;)
As it's having such a positive effect on my painful knees, it also improves my mood as a secondary result. So... Less achey, more happy!
Boom!

Hi Ladies :) does anyone have a link to a site explaining more about Turmeric, i have horrible knee pain due to O/A and would like to give this herb a try..xx
-
If you are on FB there is a group called Tumeric Users Group, there are some extremely knowledgeable people in the group who will be able to answer all your questions.

Many thanks Cassie.. :-*

Many thanks Heidi I have put link into my fav's and going have a good read now with my cup of coffee.. :-* :-*

I am going to have a look too at turmeric as I have also read how good it is in the menopause.
I use turmeric powder in cooking. Is that ok or do you need to buy the tablets or paste as they may be stronger?
-
Turmeric latte is nice too. Use a pinch of black pepper to help it to be absorbed effectively.
Using turmeric in cooking is probably at least as effective as a supplement if not better as it is much better absorbed if it's combined with food. That's what Michael Moseley says anyway!

Hi, Paisley... I'd look into making the paste yourself if I were you - it's a doddle & you can do a batch and freeze it! You also know then EXACTLY what has gone into it. I appreciate it's easier to pop a pill sometimes but it really only takes 10mins to make.
According to the articles I've read you get maximum benefit by mixing the turmeric with black pepper & coconut oil. It's all on the link I shared.
Hope you get the same results as me.... I'm cockahoop!!! ;D ;D ;D

Ok.... so I'm a couple of months in taking turmeric paste and I now have NO knee pain at all. I am now able to do a few yoga poses I hadn't been able to do for months & months.
Obviously, we won't all react the same, but it's working for me.
The point of this update is that I have bought a couple of silicone coffee bean moulds (used in baking) off t'internet and am now freezing my turmeric paste rather than stirring it into hot water/milk - so no stained teeth ;D ;D ;D Just straight down with a glass of water!
Good luck to you if you're trying it :) x

Hiedif67 just remember that its important to take the tumeric with some form of food for absorption even in warmed coffee, they dont recommend drinking the frozen pieces as it can cause damage to the oesophagus, perhaps pop a frozen blob in some coffee and drink it like that. I make warm bovril water and I add some paste and a dash of tumeric pepper its delicious.
-
Thanks, Cassie... I take it at breakfast time and tea time so always with food.
I'm not convinced about such a tiny lump of anything frozen causing damage to the oesophagus - I eat bigger pieces of ice lolly ;) That said, if you can post the link to this information I'd love to give it a read. I don't want to swap one problem for another, after all :)
-
thank you for this
My knee is terribly sore I am going to try the tumeric paste asap x :)
-
Heidi were did you buy your Turmeric Powder, I have seen it in 2 Supermarkets but not sure its the right powder, I want to make a paste and 'put on' to my knee's, have been reading so much about it over last week and want to give it a go, for anyone else who is using it and getting relief well done.. :-* :-*
-
Hi Rosebush the paste will not work used on the outside, you need to drink it in some coffee or take it with food, I just had mine now with some tomatoe juice its very pleasant. All that will happen from the outside is you will get yellow knees.
-
Hi Rosebush... I seem to have had my last post with the link to the website removed??? Maybe we aren't allowed to post links to a specific website. Would be good to be notified as to why tho, so I don't make the same mistake again!!!!
Anyway, I bought mine from Buy Wholefoods Online. 1kg bag - organic, appx £10. Other health food websites are available.
I bought my coconut oil from Aldi. Other supermarkets are available.
I probably got my black pepper from Tesco or Asda. Maybe even Sainsbury's - I'm not very loyal ;) Not Waitrose though - don't have one nearby!
I'm with Cassie regarding applying it directly to your knee. I have read that you can do this, but I don't really see how you would absorb it properly. Also you'd use LOADS! That said, it's your call & I'd definitely be interested in your results and ensuing 'tan'... ;D
Let's see if this post sticks, shall we!?!
