Hi, can anyone suggest some natural sleep aids? For example, I think magnesium is one. Thank you in advance!
-
Morning Mrs B I use tetley redbush vanilla tea bags they have zero caffeine or tannin as they're not strictly a tea they're a herb.I now get at least 7 hours at night as previously it was scattered, asleep an hour awake an hour stuff so huge improvement for me on them.xx

Morning Daisydot!
I will have a look in my local supermarket for it. Fingers crossed Tetley stock them in OZ.
Thank you for the suggestion. X

You can try any type of redbush tea,it's South African I think,I just prefer the vanilla flavour I have pampered taste buds 😂😂 xx
-
There's an app called insight timer that has a lot of sleep meditations and music. It's great

Thanks Katia! I use that App along with Smiling Mind. I find them really helpful. I can't take sleepers so am looking at other ways to help improve my sleep pattern. I find it hard to fall asleep, and I also wake frequently during the night. It is driving me mad.

Oh I might be able to source the redbush tea from my local health food shop if all else fails. Goodo!
I must say, I think I too would prefer a lovely vanilla flavour if given the option Daisydot! My taste buds are rather pampered too 😂😉 X

Deep bubble bath
Soft music by the bed
Do not fight 'I can't sleep tonight' - it becomes a vicious circle. The night I stopped worrying that I wouldn't be able to cope due to poor sleep patterns was the night I went to sleep ........ if I have bad nights I read, do crosswords, make a cuppa.
Not too hot or cold
Keep hydrated in the day as the kidneys will work harder if we with hold liquids
-
CLKD A bath is a great idea. I have one every night. I sleep really well after a ginger bath. Just boil and simmer pieces of ginger in some water for about half an hour and add that to the bath. That helps me sleep.
I just look at the smiling minds app, I have tried tried that one. I have the other problem of wanting too much sleep
-
Wanting or the body requiring?
Apparently we think we need more sleep than we require, the body apparently will catch up as necessary in that it will sleep deeper when sleep is needed. My pattern is usually OK with the odd night of going to sleep but waking at mid-night thinking that I've been asleep for hours ::). Then I'm awake :-\. OK unless my brain starts to whirr ........
Relaxation the muscles from the toes upwards can help too. As can trying to keep the eyelids wide open ........

CLKD I am dog tired all the time. I constantly have bags under my eyes. All because of crappy sleep.
I have never heard of trying to keep your eyelids wide open. I will give that a whirl.

For those who are interested, as a South African living in SA, rooibos tea (we don't call it red bush, even if we're English), is great for the digestive system. It is traditionally drunk without milk but here it's a staple so often drunk milky too. It's often and I think best combined with lemon, honey and ginger. So a great tea when you have a cold too :)
-
Just to add to these posts, Mrs. Bella - I use a magnesium spray if I wake up in the middle of the night. It definitely helps me get back to sleep and wake refreshed.

Oh sorry CLKD, I have only just seen this. I was so tired this morning I missed it. Story of my life at the moment.
Thank you for the ideas/suggestions. I use to take baths before bed. I must start again as they do help me to relax. I think I might have one now as I need to turn in early. It's been a loooooong day.
Thank you CLKD! X

Ooooooo...I haven't heard of ginger before. Thank you Katia for mentioning that.
I love Smiling Mind. My fave is “Starry Nightâ€.
Katia can you please send some of your sleepiness my way? X

I wish I had a brew of that combo now: for sleep and a cold.
I went into town today and couldn't find it. I will have to google it to see if I can buy it online.

Nearly every supermarket stocks Redbush (Rooibos) tea. There is also Redbush teas. combined with vanilla, Earl Grey and Green tea.
You can add anything to Redbush tea yourself as hearandthere suggests.
Also as it is so good for the skin you can find skincare with Rooibos added too.
The health benefits are amazing.

Unfortunately I live in the sticks tika. The closest city being Melbourne is a 4 hour drive away. My local supermarket is pretty limited, and the health food store is a 3 hour round trip by car.
It does sound great...so many things it can aid in. I like the idea of a skincare range with Rooibos in it.
Thank you for mentioning that tika!

I find taking a natural herbal tea as levander, chamomile and valeriana an hour before going to bed very helpful. Try to avoid stress, watching TV or internet and not to think so much about sleep! :)

Hello dulciana!
It's interesting you say that as a friend suggested the spray to me yesterday. She said to spray it on your feet. I have never of such a thing. Is this true?
-
Best to get it online Mrs Bella amazon have it, do they deliver? (sorry I did not realise you were not in UK) x

Emerald2017 I once drank a herbal blend called “Sleepytime Teaâ€. It didn't really do anything for me.
I have heard of Valerian supplements. I have no idea if they are effective.
Oh golly I really have it all wrong...all I can think about is sleep. I even daydream about sleep.

I think Amazon do deliver to OZ. When I am not so tired I will have a good olde google for it online. I am also going to Melbourne in a few weeks and am bound to find it there. Thanks tika! X

I've had terrible insomnia in the past and tried everything. I practice good sleep hygiene which is stuff like avoiding caffeine from early afternoon onwards, no TV in the bedroom, go to bed and get up at the same time every day, wear earplugs and keep the room dark and cool.
The thing is, people who sleep well just sleep, they don't try. It's all us insomniacs who are trying lavender spray and milky drinks. To be honest it's the fluoxetine that's put my sleep back in order, plus the hrt has stopped me overheating and waking up at night.

Oh I think we maybe twins that were separated at birth...that's me to a tee. Maybe I should be on Fluoxetine too?

Oh yuk to all those ;D

Where's your sense of adventure ::) x ;D

Oh yuk to all those ;D
I had yet another crappy nights sleep. At this stage I will try anything if it worked CLKD.
I am wondering CLKD, should the HRT I am taking be more effective in dampening what I consider a symptom of menopause? I use to over sleep prior to staring menopause.
-
Ladies I think I am losing the plot again. My lack of sleep is killing me. I am struggling to function during the day. I am not depressed nor anxious so have no idea what is wrong with me. Blimey I am crying from lack of sleep just typing this 😥
-
Hello again Mrs. Bella,
Sorry to hear that. All I can add to the suggestions above is to pay attention to your body, it often tells us what is going wrong. I don't have much spare time to come over here frequently and I get lost amongst so many posts and threads so forgive me for not knowing anything about you. Where are you menopause wise?
My own experience with lack of sleep is so weird. Since perimenopause began around my early 40's I would awake around 4 am every day and be unable to go back to sleep. Once I went to see a fortune teller (a friend made me do it) and she told me I had been beheaded at that time in a previous life 😱 😂 Obviously this was just the beginning of the hormonal roller coaster. When perimenopause hit big time I was sleeping less than one hour a day and my physical and mental health began to deteriorate rapidly. I thought I was suffering from anxiety (I had many other issues at the time). I didn't take any drugs. I tried mindfulness, which helped, and decided to do something while awake instead of trying to get to sleep. I had many problems at work because of this, had to change my career aspirations for something more flexible.
Suddenly I was falling asleep for no reason and all I wanted/needed was to stay in bed deeply asleep. It looked like depression but again I didn't take any drugs and had to give up work altogether.
Now things are coming into balance and I am much more functional. I still have a very disturbed sleep pattern because of hot flushes but the 4 am terror is gone, so no beheading after all 😂😅
Anyway, I think hormonal changes play a big role in sleep patterns. Perimenopause is definitely a hellish time. If you are still having hormonal fluctuations this will be one factor. If you're not then it could be your adrenal glands trying to adjust to the new hormonal balance.
My final word on this (I bet you're feeling sleepy already 🤣): you can have my cat staying with you for some time, he wants to play all the time so at the end of the day you will be knackered! 😼
Hope you're having a good night sleep right now 💤

Thank you for responding Conolly!
My menopause symptoms started late last year. It's been a roller coaster ride since then. So I think my hormones are still all over the place. I am taking HRT tablets and an antidepressant.
I am in OZ thus it's daytime. Despite being exhausted, even if I were to go back to sleep for a nana nap I would lay there wide awake. I wish there was an easy answer/solution 😞
-
I'm afraid nothing is easy...
When have your sleep problems begun? Before HRT? Do you need progesterone? Late last year means you're still going through perimenopause, so you will be experiencing many symptoms because the hormonal fluctuations are huge.
Hang in there, sweetie. At least you live in a wonderful country 😎

I haven't slept well for awhile. But the insomnia really took hold when the hot flushes started.
I thought the HRT was helping, but am now questioning that.
I tried Tribolone which also has progesterone in it. The progesterone sent me more bonkers. So I am on a straight estrogen HRT now (Duavive).
Yes, I am lucky living here. I live in rural Victoria. 50 minutes to the coast, and 1 hour to The Grampians Ranges. It sure is a beautiful part of the world I am blessed to live in.
-
Hello Bella,
So you are post-menopausal... ?
Hot flushes are my major problem now, sleep wise. Have you noticed some improvement while on Tibolone and now on Duavive?

I think I am in the peri one. My estrogen levels are all over the place.
I did notice a difference on Tibolone, but I came off it due to the pain I experienced in my abdomen. My tummy would blow up to the point of looking like I was 9 months pregnant and I was in so much pain. I also put on 6kg in 4 weeks.
I would describe the Duavive as half working...I still get the sweats up, anxiety and insomnia.
I don't know whether I am Arthur or Martha Conolly 😔
-
Poor thing. I have just asked because as I understand both drugs are for post-menopausal ladies... ?

Oh 🤔
I wonder why my GP has put me on them then.
What am I meant to be on Conolly?
-
Sorry Mrs Bella, I have no expertise on HRT, all I know is to read the leaflets... both drugs are used for ‘postmenopausal' women.
I can't be 100% positive that they can't be used in perimenopause but I'm assuming they have not been extensively tested in perimenopausal wonen.
You could ask your GP why did he choose them. I'm sure you can find this information on the main MM website, under ‘Treatments'.

My brain wouldn't switch off last night >:( - flashbacks, legs ached, legs cold, rest of me hot. Very little to do with hormones but a 'usual' bad night.

That sounds horrendous CLKD!
I hope you get a better nights sleep tonight. X
-
Conolly I really have gone bonkers...I looked up “Treatmentsâ€. Halfway through I realised I had already read the information. CLKD suggested I read up on treatments last week.
I went to see my GP today. She wants me to continue with the Duavive for another 2 months. After that I shall know if it is working effectively. If not, then she will prescribe me Femoston.
-
You have to learn to be kind to yourself Mrs B.your not bonkers just having a few blip moments like all the rest of us on here lol.
The fact that you can run a busy house with youngsters and a working farm speaks volumes about you.
Be guided by your gp sometimes we get a good one,if not then the ladies here will come to your rescue using their experiences to try and guide you.keep posting I enjoy your company xx
-
Re the post-meno prescriptions - Mrs Bella has had a hysterectomy so doesn't know where she is in menopause - Is that right Mrs Bella? I am also interested to know though why you have been prescribed Tibolone and Duavive if you don't have a uterus but I am presuming you need the progestogen ( or the SERM in Duavive) because you had endometriosis before your hysterectomy and therefore need to take progestogen all the time to prevent any build up of deposits outside your body?
If you didn't have endometriosis - then a reason for being prescribed Tibiolone would be low libido, but no reason to be prescribed Duavive as you wouldn't need the protective effect of the bazedoxifene ( sp?), and you certainly wouldn't need Femoston! Duavive is a pretty low dose of oestrogen as well.
Remember if you are in Oz there is a testosterone cream now approved and available - Androfeme, so you could have this alongside an oestrogen patch or pill...
Hurdity x

Awwwww thank you Daisydot! I enjoy your company as well.
Oh I am my own worse critic. I see the good in others, but mostly the bad in myself. I have been like this as early as I can remember.
I have a fabulous GP. I have been seeing her for 19 years. I trust her judgment as she knows my medical history like the back of her hand. I am limited to what medications I can take as I have some liver function disorder...can't remember the name. Basically my liver can't process certain medications so they build up to toxic levels. I had a near death experience which lead to genetic testing amongst other tests that pointed the finger at a dodgie liver.
However, I did run through a few other HRT options which some of the other ladies have suggested. My GP took it all on board.
I am finding the MM community so supportive. Not just about menopause, but also about life in general. There is always something that resonates with me when I read others' posts.
Blimey I really am prattling on... I will keep posting, and thank you Daisydot for responding to them. X
-
Hi Mrs Bella,
I enjoy your posts too, and you're not prattling on :)
Given that you know and trust your GP, I would imagine she's prescribed what you're taking to find something that suits you best.
-
Hi Mrs B Hurdity has given you some great advice there especially if your having liver problems as the creams or /patches/gels are transdermal so will bypass the gut and liver so if your gps good like you say I'd run Hurditys suggestions past her.good luck in whatever you decide xx

Oh Hurdity I am so confused now.
I have had a hysterectomy. I still have my ovaries. I had one because my periods were out of control. I will spare you the details. I tried the pill, an Implanon and Mirena. None of these helped so I had a hysterectomy at age 34.
Hurdity I have never had endometriosis.
My GP first put me on patches...they sent me bonkers. I became sort of aggressive and very cranky.
Then she put me on Vagifem. They irritated me down there.
Then it was Tibolone. I have no idea why. I just took it. That was a disaster too.
After that it was another HRT...I think it was just estrogen. The packaging was like a wheel. I just moved the dispenser to the next day. Well that made my boobs feel all tingly. It was horrible.
Lastly, my GP came back from a conference and mentioned Duavive. As it's new on the market she had not yet prescribed it to any other patients. I said I would give it a go.
Isn't Femoston just estrogen? I thought that would be ok for me?
Androfeme is only approved in Western Australia I think my GP said. I would have to get it shipped from there. I still have no idea what and why I would need it?
Hurdity, I thought I kinda understood this menopause bizzo. I have no bloody idea!
What am I meant to be taking? 😩
-

Thank you Wilks!
I hope you are still having a fantastic time on hols.
I do trust my GP. But the MM ladies seem to know a lot more as more options are available in the UK. Eg. Duavive has literally just landed here.
I have no idea what I should be taking 😬
-
Mrs B sorry no wonder your feeling so confused.
I had a hysterectomy 20 years ago had hrt for a few years then taken off by new gp due to all the misinformation bandied around by our so called professionals so is it any wonder we get our heads wedged firmly up our asses trying to work this out.
I'm on oesrtogel now last 5months along with vagifem,I was on estriol cream first but looked like I'd had a snowfall down there when I used it so swopped so maybe you could try the estriol cream first internally for 14 nights to pave the way then see how that goes to decide wether you'll continue with it because trust me you will need some kind of help there at some stage so better sooner than later when it turns to razor blades.
I've been a different me since starting back on hrt don't get me wrong I still have my blip days but there few and far between now.
As my oestrogen levels are now up my meno consultant has prescribed testosterone gel now to see if that improves libido and muscle aches,I've not started it yet I'm still trying to get over the trauma of the price of it ;D
I would recommend the oesrtogel over patches as they did nothing much at all for me and you can increase the gel to suit your needs,I'm now able to increase to two squirts on consultants advice maybe because I'll be using testosterone I should have clarified but the poor man looked ready for a nap I'd drained his brain so much with the verbal diahorrea lol.
You don't need progesterone if you've had hysterectomy so I don't get why she has you on it given your history, your not there to be her guinea pig you need proven methods not hit or miss trials so stand up to her and say ok this is what I'd like to try after doing some research myself, take control back Mrs B. Xx good luck

Thank you Daisydot!
My brain is a little fried after all this chitchat...so from what you are saying I should try Oesrtogel and a testosterone gel?
-
No Mrs B try oesrtogel first for at least three moths to get your levels up and to see how you do on it,it's completely different from the pills or patches and has been a life changer for an awful lot of us,you'll start on a low dose I'd say two initially at your age then it can be tweaked to suit your needs up or down
You simply rub it on your inner or outer thigh each morning and let it dry before dressing,
If you have low libido and muscle aches then testosterone would be a good option to try “after†you have settled on the oestrogen and gotten your levels up and stable.
Also ask for estriol cream for your undercarriage it'll help you so much.
So oesrtogel pump and estriol cream is what you want initially I'd say.if you have different names in oz for these your gp should still get the gist of what your requesting good luck xx
-
Does your bloody head in doesent it lol.

Does your bloody head in doesent it lol.
Yes, it does!
I went to my GP with a completely different list based on what I read in the "Treatments" section and from the forum. I am probably confusing my GP as well.
-
I am sorry Mrs B I know it's all very stressful trying to make sense of all the terminology and various names which can differ from country to country but be the same thing.
You don't have to listen to any of the recommendations if your not comfortable with it but I've tried to keep it in layman's terms for you but explain the thoughts behind it.
You do what your happy with and your gp sounds as if she wouldn't be averse to a bit of outsider knowledge to help,it's got to make her life easier too hasn't it.good luck x

Dear Mrs. Bella,
Sorry if I added fuel to the fire 😨 as I said before I only read the leaflets because I can't take HRT so I keep looking for any new treatments available.
Your GP sounds great, I'm sure she'll appreciate your efforts to be proactive regarding your own health.
If you kept your ovaries and had so many different HRT treatments, then your own hormones could be still around. Am I wrong? The knowledgeable ladies will certainly answer that.
Don't you fret, dear! We're all different and that's a wonderful thing.
Night, night, sleep tight 💤😘

Not at all Conolly! I am truly grateful that you pointed it out.
I have had my bloods done and my doctor said I definitely needed to go on HRT. For me all medications are trial and error due to my dodgie liver. I have to have monthly liver function tests regardless of medications I am on. You know when you read the side effects...you go right the down the bottom and it says “Rare Well I normally get those.
I told my GP yesterday that I thought the Duavive was only half working ie. not that effective. She really wants me to give it longer as I didn't actually give the others a real shot. My fault entirely as I was pretty stubborn about the whole thing. Looking back, I realise I should have given the patches more of a go. When you have no idea of what's going on with your mind & body, I find it hard to be rational.
-
Hi Mrs Bella, I've not worked out how to do quotes but I just saw your comment about patches in your last post. There have been so many posts I can't remember if or where I said it, but I found the Estradot patches which I've been using for the last 4 months to be less irritating to my skin than the Evorel ones I had before.

I can't remember which one I had. But, I will keep Estradot in mind if I have to go back to the drawing board in 2 months. I also wish I had heard of the Oestrogel Pump-pack before I embarked on taking oral HRT. Oh well... I know now. X

Natural sleep aids - fresh air in the room, though I prefer to be warm. Gentle exercise in the day? Sleep when your body requires it? I slept most of yesterday, deeply - and slept all night too.
Is your mattress comfy? We have a large bed so we don't get in each others' way ....... and cotton sheets, no duvet - ditched the duvet 20 years ago.

Hi CLKD, I find I sleep best when it's cool. It's gotten down to around 1 degrees here for the past few nights. Oh my I have slept so well as a result. My bedroom is pitch black and the only noise you can here is the occasional cow or sheep during the night. I love my bed. I would love to be able to stay in there all day if I could. But, once I am awake regardless of how tired I am I get up. Otherwise I start to overthink things and get into a muddle.
I am very active. I don't stop all day apart from a cuppa here and there. I also run 7km a day. If I don't I wouldn't sleep at all. Darn insomnia really has taken over...I blame Mrs Menopause! 😡
How have you been sleeping after the rotten night you had recently? X

Like a log! though last night I have very busy dreams .......... which leave me exhausted!
Maybe you are running too far? Too much exercise can shut down the brain at the time but may be a stimulus. We aren't built to run for long distances. Short sharp spurts to escape that Sabre Toothed Tiger but not long distance!

Golly you can't win...poor quality sleep and/or vivid dreams.
I only run if I have time. Like today I was in town all morning taking/watching my son play hockey. When I got home I had to help with sheep work. Now it's doing the domestics so no running for me today. I am looking forward to sitting down at 7:30pm to watch Father Brown. I am so addicted to BBC crime shows.
Hope you sleep like a log tonight CLKD. X

Morning Mrs Bella, I am currently trying a prebiotic inulin (Golden Greens) as it supposed to aid sleep. Early days yet and I am constantly being woken with night heats as unable to take HRT, but hoping it will get me off again after waking. Happy Zzzzzzzz.

Hello Knorman,
That's really interesting you mentioned that. I just googled ‘Prebiotics & Sleep'. An article popped up written by Michael Mosley. It seems a healthy gut is the key to good health. There is more chitchat on another of my posts about gut health: Weight Issues.
Thank you Knorman!

I'll keep you posted!

I slept nearly all of yesterday. In my camper. With birds singing, sheep bleating, crows making noise. Out like a light ;-). No dreams in the day so woke feeling rested.

I had a bad night walking at 4.00 for a bathroom visit then again at 6.30 - busy day so anxiety forced me to swallow an emergency pill which made me really tired. I slept all the way home ..........

Lack of sleep is the pits. When I am overtired my anxiety peaks and then I struggle sleeping. It's a vicious cycle that can make me turn into a man woman. I had to take an emergency pill also last night. Unfortunately it didn't do much :(

I'm really working on my sleep hygiene. No screens at all after 9pm, and I diffuse lavender and clary sage in the evenings. I have a cup of Clipper Snore & Peace tea before bedtime, and have blackout curtains in my bedroom and use the 'This Works' pillow sleep sprays.
Sometimes it works, other times not so much. For me, a stressful day before or after guarantees rubbish sleep and a 4am awakening (why is it ALWAYS 4am)?!?. xxxx

Hi Tempest,
I too do similar things before I go to bed. However, I use my phone's alarm clock which sits by my bed at night. I think I am going to have to ditch the phone and buy an old fashioned/traditional clock as I constantly check to see what the time is during the night.
I have never heard of pillow sleep spray. Does it help?
Funny you should mention 4am...that's one of the times I always seem to wake. Someone told me it's due to the change in air pressure or temperature just before dawn breaks. Well it was something along those lines. Thank you for responding to me thread!

Thank you Daisydot!
I will have a read-up in the morning.
I am feeling so miserable. Lack of sleep and increasing weight are sending me into a spin. I feel like I am sleeping less, and that I have put on loads of weight since starting HRT. I don't understand what's going on? :'(

Hi Mrs Bella
I can only offer my empathy and an e-hug. I'm fed up with my bigger waist but it's obviously a difficult thing to control as I keep noticing women of a certain age who are otherwise slim but with a bit of a “spare tyreâ€. If I wasn't into sports I'd be happier to “starve†myself. I did a 48km mountain bike event yesterday and had to eat a lot just to fuel the ride.
Cortisol is a hormone that peaks in the morning to wake us up for the day, but chronic stress/ anxiety can increase our cortisol levels above what is needed, which can cause weight gain. Humph.
