Title: Tostran & Hair Loss
Post by: Dmt on March 29, 2018, 12:17:20 PM
I know this has been covered in another topic, but it has kinda expired and I am in need of advice PLEASE:
I initially received Tostran from seeing a private consultant S Whitcroft last March 2017 and I must say she was worth every penny. I have since been receiving all of the meds/hormones she prescribed for me from my NHS Dr including the Tostran. She advised me to only start using the T 2 weeks after taking the estrogen etc. Which I did. She said to start by using 2 pumps per day.
My hair starting really thinning and so I contacted her and she said that provided I was sticking to the correct amount of Estrogen she had prescribed, this shouldn't happen. But, if I wanted to, then I could reduce the T to 1 pump per day to see, if after a few months my body/hair had settled down and then increase the dose back to 2 pumps. After 6 months of using 1 pump per day my hair is now thinner then ever (you can see my scalp on the front & sides) So I am now using 1/2 a pump (pea size) to see if that helps. I don't want to stop using the T altogether because the Tostran & Estrogen together has made such a difference to my life....lots of energy, libido, confidence & diminished low moods etc...I could go on. After reading another topic on here re the same subject I was wondering if anyones hair has returned to normal after they reduced the amount of T or after stopping it altogether?????

Sorry to hear this  :( - Obviously every one is different but the Menopause Specialist I am seeing has told me to only use a pump of Tostran twice a week.

Have you had your Testosterone level tested recently? The range I was told to go on is 1-5.

I'm assuming your GP has ruled out low Vitamin D or Thyroid issues as a cause of the hair loss.

Not had my T levels checked but have had 2 thyroid blood tests, one privately & the other by NHS. Both were normal. I take lots of vitamin's including vitamin D and I keep fit, eat healthy and don't drink, so I assume it's the Tostran. Perhaps I should switch to using 1 pump twice a week and see if my hair improves. Thank you  ;D

Do you have hair thinning in the family ?

When I hit post meno and just on oestrogen I noticed sudden thinning.  My ferritin was 46 whereas for healthy hair/growth it ideally needs to be 80-100

I now use Tostran since May 2017 and I use 3/4 - 1 pump per day.  My thinning hasn't got worse but it hasn't got better, but my mum and Nan, looking back both had thinning.  I just assumed it was an old lady thing, not me @48 years old !!! So I have to put it down to ferritin not at an ideal level or hereditary

Edit: sorry hubby was rushing me to go eat dinner! I do think it's worth you cutting down on your dosage as it could be a side effect of too much testosterone

X

Thank you Annie0710, most of my family have really good hair but mines always been quite thin, which is why it's even worst for me now as I can see my scalp practically at the front. My consultant said it would get much better with the estrogen, so I am going to try using the Tostran twice a week & see if it improves

Gosh dmt - that was a massive amount of testosterone and I am very surprised that a consultant gyane would prescribe this much to a woman!!! This is why it is so important that we get our own product specifically formulated in different doses that have been trialled on women.

2 pumps of Tostran give 20 mg testosterone!

I sachet of Testogel or Testim contains 50 mg testosterone - to give yourself that amount of tesosterone would involve using almost 3 sachets per week!! I have never heard of any woman being prescribed more than - "make the sachet last 7 days" - which would be a high-ish dose.

Half a pump of Tostran would give you 5 mg T so the same amount of T from Testogel would mean the sachet lasted 10 days - so that sounds about right. I use less - I make mine last 2 weeks or so.

Hope the reduced dose slows your hair-thinning.

How much oestrogen are you using?
