Hi ladies
I was fitted with a Mirena at the end of January - I have Evorel 75mg patches for the oestrogen element. Before this I was happily on Femoston Conti for a couple of years but it was starting to lose its effect as my hot flushes, night sweats and insomnia returned with a vengeance. I attend a Menopause Clinic and the gynae suggested the Mirena.
I appear to be putting on weight rapidly on a weekly basis. I am a Weight Management Consultant and so I have to be very careful with my diet to set a good example to my clients. I exercise regularly. Over the past couple of weeks, I have made a huge effort to lose weight and I haven't lost an ounce. I am worried I will be out of business!
I know weight gain is listed as a side effect for 5% of women.
Are there any ladies out there with a similar story? I am looking for reassurance that it will all settle in time. I am hugely bloated too.
Many thanks!

Hi ljack1
I've had the mirena since Dec 2016 and I have noticed my weight creeping up slightly. I don't eat badly and I don't think I eat anymore than I did and I do aerobic exercises 2-3 times a week plus walk my dog everyday. Don't know whether it's just an age thing, as when I was younger I would easily loose weight and now despite trying it takes me ages to loose a pound. The only solution I can see is to refine my diet even more and up the exercise. It must be very frustrating for you as your job revolves around weight management. Is it a lot of weight you've gained?

Hi ljack1 - sadly controlling our weight gets tougher as we move deeper into menopause. There is a surge of progesterone at first with the Mirena but it shouldn't result in too much weight gain - there can be a bit of fluid retention!! I eat roughly a third less each day than I did 10 years ago and still can't loose that fat that has emerged on my tummy and hips!!!! DG x

I started the mirena about 15 months ago. I def have put on weight in the past 18 months or so but it's really hard to know where it's come from. I'm really healthy and exercise a lot but my appetite has increased and my impulse control decreased a bit - so even though I'm still really healthy, it's all about calories in - and I suspect I'm consuming too many.
I've never really put it down to the Mirena. I thought it was more about menopause, fluctuating hormones, slower metabolism. But I don't know - you might have made a correct link
That said, I'm vain enough to care and I'm about to start hypnotherapy to rewire me as around food and weight as I move through this next chapter

I have lost weight since I had my Mirena in 2016, mostly due to the fact that I can exercise as my awful VA is controlled with full HRT...I use the Mirena for the progesterone component.

Ljack1 - hi again. Forgot to mention that I think you need to switch to Oestrogel instead of patches. Dg x

I'm definitely having to work to keep my weight down since having the Mirena nearly 8 weeks ago. I exercise 3-5 times a week. I don't diet though, I've always eaten healthily. It is one of the side effects mentioned but also as already mentioned this time of life sees weight gain anyway.
My what joys being a woman brings!!! X
