I've just been to the docs re an increase in tension headaches I normally take Syndol, which the doc seems to think I have a dependency on She gave me a prescription for Betablockers to try and reduce the headaches I am worried about taking them Has anyone tried them for headaches or got any other advice?
Thank you x
-
I would read the advice leaflet very carefully. I know a lot of ladies on here take these but they are a strong medication with side effects. It makes me angry that doctors think it's OK to treat the side effects of one drug by prescribing another. Not good practice at all.
-
Thanks Shadyglade Which side affects have they had? There are loads on the leaflet but the doc just mentioned tiredness I have been off work for 2 days wth this tension headache Not sure what to do for the best x
-
I had a family member who after a few days of taking them became extremely restless, anxiousness and unable to sleep. He stopped taking them asap but the effects lasted sometime. Everyone is different. I am not saying you will get side effects but I can't see how giving a drug to treat a problem with another drug, is going to help you. Surely he should have give you advice on how to wean yourself off Syndol??
-
She said the best time to wean off is the summer hols when I'm off Some people go cold turkey she said I need to deal with the here and now I generally try the herbal route but that hasn't worked for this x

Betablockers are a routinely prescribed for migraine prevention and I guess your gp thinks it may help your tension headaches?
Which one has been prescribed?
-
Thanks for your reply Tinkerbelle It's Propanalole 40 mg I'm just scared of being hooked on something or the side effects I have taken fluorexetine for years I'd love to know how people feel on these tablets and how soon x
-
I have been on atenolol, another beta blocker, for years, only side effect I got when I came off them for a few months was palpitations for the first few days, in my opinion they are not addictive.
-
Do you take them for headaches? How soon did they work and what diff did you notice? X
-
I take them for BP, I had to come off them when I was pregnant with my youngest but back on them as soon as she was born.
I have a friend who was prescribed Atenolol for migraines and had a reduction in them, but she said they made her feel tired, funnily enough even though I am on a fairly high dose they have no side effects for me.
I have a teenage migraine suffering son who wants to try them but because he has lung problems he isn't allowed them.
Personally I would give them a try.

I take inderal for palps. I only take 10mg at night and have no side effects

Beta blockers can help with tension headaches/migraines. I noticed a definite increase in my migraines when I stopped the beta blockers (HBP). There are lots of different beta blockers - propanolol is the most common one. It can also help with anxiety. They are not addictive in any way so you are safe to take them.

Would finding out the cause of the headaches be a better place to start. Many migraines are triggered by everyday food stuffs so a food diary could be useful. Personally I only go down the medication route if there is no alternative. All medications have adverse affects, even if we done notice them. Mine were caused by caffeine and I went through months of misery before finding the reason. However I take no medication now except the occasional ibuprofen, and that really is very rare.
-
Thanks for your replies. I like you Shadyglade am more into the alternative route. I took 3 x 40mg tablets whether it's them or taking Syndol a few days ago, but for the last few days all I want to do is sleep which isn't like me and I feel nauseous This is my 4th day off work I went to my local health shop and spoke to a person I have been to many times Yes, she said get to the route of the problem I have cut down on caffeine and increased my water intake I plan to go back to yoga and maybe see an osteopath for the ongoing tension in my shoulders x

Yes I agree first thing to see why you are getting the tensions headaches whether it be food related or lifestyle I have been on the same route tried everything preventatives and stopped chocolate cheese tomatoes but my headaches were migraines and I was prescribed beta blockers for preventative of migraines but after I read the leaflet it says they lower blood pressure and as I already have low blood pressure I didn't take them as you say you are given tablets to supposedly help you but In fact cause more problems, and side effects I always check on,one when ever I am prescribed anything but yes see what triggers the headaches or tension headaches it's a process of elimination and can take time but if you can find the cause then that can help but in my case migraine is not a normal headache and as other ladies know they are very debilitating and to find something that works and agrees with you is a relief good luck in finding the cause

I'm on 2x20mg daily for high bp and always had low bp until we sold our house, bought new house, retired, moved house all in one month, then son set wedding date for 6 months later! I always had low bp but my GP referred me to consultant for investigation. A pompous professor prescribed this and bp is now ok. I do find I get out of breath very easily and as an amateur singer this is very annoying. Also find walking up a very little hill too hard. Going to ask gp if I can reduce dose. Not happy how as you say, they prescribe one drug so easily.

Poppi, beta blockers are not usually prescribed as a first line drug for hypertension these days. Normally you would be given an ACE inhibitor or calcium channel blocker. I had the breathlessness thing a few years ago when a consultant prescribed 5 mg bisoprol fumarate for unexplained palpitations. My GP said that was not good and reduced the dose by half. (I do currently take 2.5 mg for other reasons with no problem.) It seems you have been given a sledgehammer to crack a nut.
