Title: Menopause and stomach problems
Post by: Ramona on March 10, 2018, 03:14:03 PM
Hello everyone

I have been having stomach problems for a few years. Severe bloating after very little food, nausea and sickness, and discomfort. I was recently briefly (2 months) on Elleste Duet but had to stop as the progesterone sent me over the edge with panic attacks and insomnia. However during the time I was on HRT my stomach was a bit better.

I am considering seeing my GP about alternatives to Elleste but am a bit scared as I already have clinical depression and don't want panic attacks on top of it.

Has anyone else had problems with their stomach and, if so, have you found a non-panic inducing method of treatment?

Thank you!

Ramona

Hello Ramona and welcome to the forum.

I don't have bloating but I use probiotics to help with Ulcerative Colitis and have been making my own Sauerkraut for some time. I understand that kefir milk is also effective and can be found in the chiller cabinet of major supermarkets.

My trusty meno book makes a distinction between the emotional problems of the menopause and clinical depression so I hope you are being treated for your depression and find an effective HRT regime soon.

Wishing you well.

K.

I also suffered with stomach complaints which after various tests my dr decided on Ibs. I also take and highly recommend a good probiotic with 20+Billion of good bacteria - not the little yoghurt type drinks! I convinced my dr that I didn't want my hrt in tablet form, so it wouldn't aggravate my stomach, and the transdermal route works for this. Hope you find something that helps.

Digestion problems (slow transit constipation, bloating, severe nausea) were my first peri symptoms. When oestrogen is surging high and progesterone is low, water is diverted away from the bowels to protect more important organs and it causes excessive bloating and slow transit. Apparently in pregnancy this is a good thing as it allows more nutrient absorption due to the slower journey through.

Magnesium can help if you can tolerate it and eating less fibre at peak slow transit times. Otherwise balancing hormones if you can find something that suits you.

Thank you all so much for your replies.

I will definitely try a good peobiotic and sauerkraut

Stonach problems have made me lose enjoyment of eating. I know how important it is to eat well during this time so it seems very ridiculous how hard it also becomes, due to the symptoms

Thank you again for your replies

Progesterone itself slows down the GI and bowel transit times.  It's a known 'side effect'.  I find when on the Utrogestan part of my HRT cycle, my digestion is a mess.  This also happens in early pregnancy when progesterone is very, very high.  It is like this for at least the first trimester then I believe it evens out or stop increasing.  I've had stomach issues for years and they did get somewhat worse not during peri but when using HRT probably because of the Utrogestan component.
