Title: What on earth is "tubal metaplasia"?
Post by: LoriPA on November 20, 2017, 05:11:47 PM
Endometrial hyperplasia and tubal metaplasia came up on a recent ultrasound. While I'm clear on what endometrial hyperplasia is, tubal metaplasia is another story. I tried researching the latter online only to find nothing more than medical gibberish which left me more confused.

Has anyone else experienced tubal metaplasia or at least have a general idea what it is (in layman's English  ;D)?

If it helps, none of my tests showed any signs of malignancies.

I found this - doesn't seem to be a cause for worry

"It refers to the presence of large number of tubal-type ciliated cells in the endometrial mucosa. It is usually an incidental finding but is seen more commonly in association with endometrial hyperplasia. It may result in abnormal cells in a Pap smear. It is not a risk factor for endometrial adenocarcinoma."

Metaplasia means the transformation of one kind of tissue into another. Tubal in this context would refer to the fallopian tubes. So presumably some of the cells found in the endometrium look more like those in the fallopian tubes. I'm afraid I don't really understand the significance of this (got a bit bogged down in the science myself there!) but at least you have been told there is no sign of malignancy so I guess it's nothing to worry about.

Well that explains a lot! Thanks for everyone's input. :)
