Title: Last bloom of beauty?
Post by: Hezzalady67! on October 30, 2017, 03:43:22 PM
Just as I hit perimenopause, I suddenly became the most attractive I had ever been. Lovely hair, great figure, nice nails, really happy. I met  a wonderful man and was full of confidence.

Suddenly it went downhill very fast indeed ( as I have mentioned before) and in the space of six years, I now feel and yes, I do look like a fat old hag. Even if my mother and said lovely man won't admit it. Is there any truth in the last bloom of youth, the body's last attempt to attract fertilisation?

I'm sure there is - hence the discussions about sudden increases in libido during peri-menopause and all those late babies we hear about.... I'm sure it is all linked and I expect oestrogen and testosterone play an important part. Fat old hag?  ;D. This is conditioning and I'm sure you're not - but it is hard to suddenly realise one doesn't have that youthful bloom any more or even anything approaching it. However there is a lot you can do to help feel good about yourself - dieting, walking, exercises to control the flab and tone those muscles, posture, make-up, good hair-cut and colour if necessary, and clothes that flatter rather than frumpify!!! (you know - banish big pants and elasticated waists, mid length flappy skirts etc...). Your lovely man loves you for who you are and not as a young thing in a beauty competition! I hope you are still happy and continue to be - but if you are feeling sad about your lost youth then maybe take some steps to make the best of yourself so that you can smile at the world with confidence about your appearance again?

I've noticed I've aged horribly these last few months.  I used to feel I always had ...well, something to hang on to, and sometimes managed to turn a head or two when I was young  :P
Now, I'm invisible to everyone and I feel fat, ugly, wrinkly, saggy, dried up. Even the OH has stopped looking and he was my biggest fan!  I can't remember the last time he told me I looked nice.

Youth is wasted on the young. I see girls smoking and want to rush up to them like the ghost of Christmas future. Mend your ways!  I've tried every trick known to woman, including slathering my face in Ovestin and nothing works.

I'm trying to age gracefully, but I'm like a one legged fish.

Sweetpea don't put ovestin on your face, you need a moisturizer with retinol in it.  It's the only thing that works (as well as sunscreen of course).  I'm using it at the moment and having really good results x

I'm 63 and I feel more beautiful than I have ever done, even though the mirror may not agree! This has to do with having more self confidence. I make myself as presentable as possible and enjoy my clothes, which helps with that confidence, but then I forget about how I look. I wish I had felt like that when I was younger. I never felt attractive but looking at old photos with the detachment of time, I see I was rather pretty. Shame I didn't enjoy that then. I look at my friends, note when I like the way their hair is looking or what they are wearing (and compliment them), but how they look isn't the issue. It's what is within that counts and how I feel around them.

Can anyone recommend a good make up brand? I have never been very good at make up and also find the 'anti ageing' moisturisers make me sneeze and feel acidic. I looked at Bare Minerals but it is so expensive. I feel like I need a foundtion or something as I always look washed out.

Foundations are too heavy on me and  accentuate my lines so I stick with tinted moisturisers.  I'm using Barry M at the minute (not right now as I still have holiday tan)

Edit: just looked and  I'm using Bobbi Brown.  That's the 2nd item I've said the wrong brand about in a few days !

I find bare minerals looks muddy on my skin.  I use Christian Dior or Bobbi Brown, but there's loads out there.  Spend a day in a good department store and ask for samples to take home.  I find the colour is often off in the department store lighting

Do you mind my asking which one this is? I have used Number 7 protect and perfect ( or the older woman version) ever since those studies which showed it actually did have an effect but not sure if it has retinol in it. I don't use sunscreen though (I know some of them have this in) unless I go to a really hot country, so use the night versions in the day as well as night!

Hi, I'm currently using one by Skincare LdeL Cosmetics, it's got retinol in it (which is a vitamin A derivative) and spf 20. I've also got an anti ageing night cream by Super Facialist - they sell this one in Boots. I've always moisturized more as a preventative measure than anything, but I can really see a difference with this stuff.  I think you do have to be careful in the sun as it can make some people sensitive, but as I live in Britain that's not really a problem!!!  I won't use it when we go on holiday though (going somewhere sunny), I'll just switch back to the normal stuff then x

Go along to a good make-up counter and ask for advice?  Maybe a Gift Token for C.mas?

I don't have time to *look* in a mirror  ::)

I definitely believe your hormones indulge in one last huge surge before they plummet into peri menopause. The year before my peri menopause started in earnest I suddenly developed the most intense crush on a TV actor who I had been totally uninterested in. Honestly, I was like a 14 year old girl over him  ::)

Hello ladies.

I don't know about a last bloom of beauty, a first one would've been nice lol!

GypsyRoseLee - funny you should mention a teenage crush. I am taking HRT and seven years post meno but I've had crushes on various actors throughout this time. I am currently infatuated with Aidan Turner of Polark fame and I am old enough to be his mother. Creepy or what!  Actually it's one of the few aspects of the menopause that isn't giving me grief so I intend to enjoy it!

Take care all.
