Hi Libby,
It could be an infection or vaginal atrophy (happened to me). I would see your GP who can take a swab and have it checked for any infection to start with. If that is clear, then you will probably need Vagifem or Estriol Cream for the atrophy if the doctor believes that is the problem.
Hope that helps!

One of the first signs of VA for me was a watery milk like discharge ( pretty common row some ).
If everything has been cleared the infection etc , if I was you I would consider local oestrogen.
-
It's like a very pale yellow and watery. It's not wee ???
-
If all else is negative I would say VA.
-
Just looked it up and yes yellow watery discharge is a symptom of VA.
-
Hi Libby.
Just wanted to add that I also had the watery discharge, and it was a symptom of VA. Vagifem has stopped it.
Obviously, get it checked out by your GP, but my money's on VA!
-
Have an appt. with your Practice Nurse - then let us know?
-
I got this with the oestrogel. I never had it before and it's gone away with a switch of HRT
-
I have started with this too and it is clear some days and dries yellow, but last week one day it looked milky like double cream. I did the home test for BV/Thrush and it was positive for BV but there is no fishy smell, so I am thinking altered PH which this tests for. I'm keeping an eye on it and may go to the doctor for clarification if it continues. It was quite copious when milky - was this the case for you Mary Jane?
-
Machair yes it's classic VA, having been to what seems every specialist convinced I had an infection as told at the time your to king for VA blah de blah , correct treatment gone VA.
Oestrogen needed basically.
-
That is so helpful Maryjane. I have never had milky discharge before, did you find it shocking when you had it and was it copious?
-
I had this post surgery. It was very watery - it came on after the bleeding had stopped and I had to use a towel as I was like a dripping tap.
I had some antibiotics which did work eventually, but the doctor who did the swab (who was supposed to be the womens expert) said it looked thrushy and said ' oh we all have different discharge at different times (as if you get to 50 without working this one out ::) )
Anyway the antibiotics seemed to work, then it came back so I tried diflucan tablets (didn't want to irritate surgery with the awful pessaries), then tried tablets and Flora plus.
Then it came back and I ignored it for a few days, but it got much worse over the weekend (couldn't sit down :o and it was now tinged with pink ), so I got an urgent appointment with a locum man who did a swab and gave me some antibiotic cream (you stick a load in with an applicator at night and then it all falls out in the morning - not good if you are getting up in the night ;) ) and when I got the results, I was put on vagifem (which I should have been using as it was prescribed by the urogynae that did the op in his letter but no one told me). When I said this wasn't what I had expected, he said 'anything goes with menopause'
It took a while to get it just right with the vagifem and reloads, and the multigyn actigel (works out cheaper than the flora plus), but I never dripped again and it has never been that bad since. It is the only thing that actually put a stop to it. These days it is so much better that I forget about the vagifem until I get swelling again. It has also stopped the infernal itching that I had had for about 5 years previously :)
-
Machair yes it would run out .
-
Thank you so much Maryjane for taking the time to answer my post, it is appreciated so much. My husband said the discharge looked like Dulux magnolia paint - not really what you want to see is it?
-
Lol 🤣 I had a photo of mine on my phone and said to gynae that is what's what , she then agreed VA.
I don't no if you have read my VA story ? Gone public.
It's in the May edition of menopause matters magazine, and Dr Louise Newson's web page , my name is Jane Lewis re the stories.
Sick of this subject being so hush hush , so trying to get it out there , have a couple of other pieces in the pipeline also.
Yes magnolia paint. 🙈
-
Maryjane can you post a link to the May edition as I can't locate it?
-
If it works page 12

Hello...I had this watery stuff too, knew it wasn't urine as I had no control over it - just poured out...I couldn't work out what it was, thought at one point it was trapped bath water or something!! 🙄😂. Thanks to this site I read about ladies with similar probs. Got vagifem and I've never had it reoccur.

Zara69 ....bath water 🤗🤣

This is fascinating! I had never realized this could be VA. I'm on a very low dose estradiol patch 0.0375 - it delivers barely enough estradiol to stave off hot flashes. This is by my choice. I've noticed over the past 6 months or so that I go through times of what seems like a lot of watery discharge. Not enough to wear a liner/pad or anything like that, but noticeable to me. No odor at all, and no itching or anything. I didn't know that VA could cause something like this. Intuitively, I would have thought the exact opposite - a drying feeling and drier secretions (or lack of secretions) which would indicate atrophy. What is the mechanism that causes atrophy to produce MORE as opposed to less secretions? I'd be so interested to know. xxxx

Basically ( BTW answering so quick today as in bed ill ) anyway , in our prime we had a nice viscous sticky / mucous discharge that coated the vagina / vulva/ urethra by default which kept everything supple warded off UTIs , then as we age the vaginal walls become thin and without realising it you are dry inside , as the discharge runs out and does not stick and coat the vaginal walls as when we were young .
Hope that make sense ? The watery discharge is also drying, so personally I would start local oestrogen before it potentially gets worse .
Why oh why aren't we warned , as this is a big problem especially repeated UTIs as we age . I have a PHD in VA or so it seems , very tempremtal vagina that has bought me to my knees , and nearly crippled us financially. 😡
-
The mechanism is all due to lack of oestrogen which has a knock on effect re collegian , the pelvic area is the most oestrogen receptive part of the body , and as a NHS gynae said to me since the HRT scare they are seeing more and more pelvic issues due to lack of oestrogen, prolapse, repeated UTIs VA etc.

Maryjane, thank you for all the very valuable insights! I'm so sorry you had to experience she come about them the hard way though. 😞 Your info is very much appreciated. xxxx
I hope you feel better soon!
