Title: How long does it take for a fibroid to calcify
Post by: Nickyp on July 20, 2017, 03:13:54 PM
Hi all,

just seen the results of an TVS and US scan. The lady who did the scan said she hadn't seen anything of concern, however reading the report it says I have what suggest to be a calcified fibroid. The reason I'm concerned is this didn't show up on a scan I had 15 months ago.

Could taking hrt have stimulated a fibroid which then calcified, was this missed last time, or could it be something else?

I'm 4 years post meno, been taking cont hrt for 18 months. My lining is 3mm, so that's ok.

Anyone had any experience of this ?

Thanks in advance

Maybe ring the Dept where you had the scan and ask or visit your GP?

Was hoping someone on here might be able to help, you lot seem a lot more knowledgeable than my GP.

I think they can grow at varying speed and then calcify when they lose their blood supply. Most women have them, maybe yours was tiny at the last scan, grew a little bit (you don't say what size it is) and then calcified. I don't think it is likely to be anything else and doesn't sound like anything to worry about.

However, I don't think anyone here will be more knowledgeable than a GP with the report in front of him/her to be honest, maybe you could go to a different GP in your practice if you aren't happy with what they say?

You said that the lady who did the scan didn't appear worried; that doesn't stop us worrying though  ::).  Could you ring her?

I've seen the actual report and that was just what it said. The scan was done by a company that go to local hospitals, there isn't a phone number apart from to change the appointment and that was an 0800 number. So yes I do still worry, am on holiday next week so will maybe try and discuss with my Gp when I get back. I was just hoping someone would say the hrt kick started the fibroid and now it's calcified there's nothing to worry about.

I really wouldn't worry.  I found this - an American site but still seems to be reassuring:
https://fibroids.com/blog/health-information/understanding-calcified-fibroids/

Looks like once they are calcified they are no longer active and this is borne out by your thin endometrium mesurement, as fibroids can grow in the presence of oestrogen -but yours haven't because the progestogen in the HRT was sufficient to keep the lining thin.

As nearly50 says only your GP can comment on your particular case seeing your report, but as no-one else you have seen is worried and from what you say it sounds OK then in the meantime......

......ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY  and do try not to worry!!! :)
