OK - anxiety from age 3 so eating has often been difficult so I tend to stick with 'safe' foods.
For years it was white toast with butter and jam for breakfast. Occasionally cereal for a change. Lots of Corona drunk.
Since reading Dr Moseley's recent book about the gut I have decided to eat more fruits and veg. so went out and bought what I fancied: podded peas which I eat popped, bananas for slow release, dried fruits/nuts, cherries, LIVE yoghurt, strawberries [which I'm not keen on ::)] can't fancy cream these days; lots of potatoes in various forms through-out the week as well as pasta/rice.
Yesterday was great: started the day with Lizis muesli that I find more filling than toast; bl/T with 2 sugars
Lunch is often a sandwich/Cornish pasty/ham salad .... bl/T with 2
bl/T with 2 mid afternoon plus biscuits, intend to alter that to fresh fruit
Evening meal varies: chopped chicken with stir-fry peppers, ginger, garlic, on a bed of rice; fish once a week baked in foil with what ever veg. is to hand; cold meat salad .....
2-day hasn't been as good as we have been out and about and food wasn't available. So more bloated but not the pumpkin I was experiencing.
Have eaten half a home-made cold pasty B4 feeling stuffed. Will eat more fruit later.
-
Eh? Is Corona not a beer?
-
Used to be a soft drink manufacturer.
-
:D - probably completely full of chemicals but I wouldn't drink much else ::). It would be in a returnable bottle, delivered every 2 weeks .....
-
;D ....... probably some form of 'slush puppy'? why anyone would want to eat anything blue :D.
We were posh ;-). Dandelion and burdock as a 'treat' though I never got why it was a treat ::) - we usually had orange or cherry flavour though the cherry never tasted like the fruit .......
I've had a small bowl of two large strawberries chopped with sugar on top, 5 large cherries as well as 9 'cotton' grapes ........ and trying to force a cuppa with 2 down ! or and a taste of white wine .......
-
Oh gosh- I remember the Corona man. I loved the limeade
-
We didn't come to any harm did we ......... I remember that the pop soon went flat once opened.
I haven't had Coke for a couple of days .......
-
No we didn't but let's face it, our diets were probably simpler and better. Food bought and cooked from scratch every day. Smaller portions too.
Then again, we had vesta curries and cadburys smash!
-
You've got me thinking I haven't drunk coke/pepsi for 20+ years, if I go out for a meal I sometimes treat myself to lime & soda otherwise I'm really boring water or peppermint tea!!
-
I never drink fizzy pop. When my kids were young I wouldn't let them have any so I gave up too. I don't have sugar on anything. I never eat biscuits and rarely cakes or pastries.
I sometimes have two wine gums of an evening.
So why have I got a spare tyre. ;D
I do like a glass of red occasionally.
I think it's to do with metabolism.
Why the sugar with everything CLKD.
It's quite easy to give up sugar in tea as tea is naturally sweet anyway.
Mrs Brown
-
Tea certainly is not naturally sweet ::) - it has tannin in it which is why I have sugar. Not something I would give up in a hurry though I am dropping the amount of cuppas as they are bloating me by mid-afternoon >:(
I've gone off honey too. Which is a shame as it helped my allergies.
I occasionally have a sip of wine if it's a new choice but I wouldn't go down that aisle .......
Have eaten half a glass pot of 'gu' - in the bath, well it needed eating up ........
-
I feel better since we drastically reduced our sugar intake. I was advised by my endo in March than I am borderline for pre diabetes (Hba1c level of 40). We have always eaten a lot of veg and usually have at least 2 or sometimes 3 at our main meal each day.
I remember the pop man and the returnable bottles :)
-
You'd get used to ditching the sugar in the tea quite quickly CLKD, and I think it'd be a good idea. Or try green tea or herbal tea?
Watch how much fruit you eat as that does affect my stomach and you might be the same - maybe oatcakes or ricecakes in the afternoon?
-
I must have strange taste buds ;D. Once I got used to tea without sugar I really do think the natural flavour is sweet.
I don't have a particularly sweet tooth any way so that helps. As for crisps and salty snacks.....well that's another story. I really try and limit them as too much salt is not good either.
I think just to aim for a good balanced diet with meat chicken fish fruit and veg in whatever amounts you are comfortable with and can tolerate is the best way ahead.
Mrs Brown

CLKD, you have a sweet tooth sweetie!!
Had a conversation with my builder a while ago who used to take three sugars in his tea and drank many cups a day. He too was borderline diabetic. He was told he had to stop the sugars and did so by gradually reducing the amount. So first, two and three quarters then after a week two and a half and so on. He now has the minutest pinch of sugar granules but already his bloodworks have improved immensely.
I too have a savoury tooth, would always choose a starter over a pud. If I eat cakes or pastries or cookies, and I do, they are homemade when you can control/adjust the sugar levels.
As the age old expression goes, 'a little bit of what you fancy does you good'. I'd never cut out something entirely from my diet, just reduce it. All things in moderation!! xx
-
Stellajane- a teeny weeny pinch of salt in real coffee removes the bitterness.
As does a pinch of sugar or few drops of honey in a tomato based sauce that is too acidic. It brings out the flavour.
Mind you, I've had some strange looks when eating out! Especially when trying to crumble a rock hard sugar cube in my tomato soup. >:(
-
My Final Meal would be:
roast beef
Yorkshire puds with gravey
Fresh peas in the pods - un-cooked
Mash and roasties
followed by steam pudding with golden syrup
However: today I have struggled :'( - after a good breakfast of muesli with sliced strawberries and cherries, bl/T with 2. A small banana mid morning then it went pear shaped. I have tried to graze on mixed fruits and nuts Himself has made me pancakes which are sustaining - 1 with lemon juice and ginger pieces the other with sugar and lemon juice.
Bugga :'(
-
Oh the extra fruit reacted this morning :( - several loo trips required. I've snacked on bits and pieces since my pancakes and at last feeling more human.
-
Maybe build up to it CLKD if your system isn't accustomed to a lot of fruit and veg.
As you would say. Baby. Well mouthfuls ;D
Mrs Brown
-
 ........... trouble is, how much is too much too soon ::). Himself then told me that he wasn't happy with the condition of the fruit that I bought >:( but I notice that he's been tucking in ??? .........
-
I could never eat banana, cherries and strawberries in one day without spending the next day close to the loo.
Taz x :-\
-
Himself can eat 4/5 large apples and other fruits every day and doesn't seem to feel any effects ......... bet his gut bacteria is perfect :D
-
:bed: :-X ;D
This morning I have struggled but managed usual muesli with bl/T with 2 but no fruit. A banana mid morning with another cuppa followed by 2 pancakes with sugar/lemon juice and ginger/lemon juice :o. 3 cherries only 1 which was sweet enough to eat ::)

I notice that Emma has moved my post without my asking - did anyone object to it being in the personal area? It is personal to me and I don't want out-siders to read it. I will ask for it to be removed. Thanks for all your input.
-
Lucky occasionally  could go either way today :'( - am trying to eat as my body is hungry .......

The area that you posted it in was "All things Menopause" which will be seen by "out-siders" to read CLKD as it always has been.
It is the private section that is only accessible to members.
And P.S. I certainly did not object to it. I enjoyed reading it.
-
Me too :).
:great:
Mrs Brown

What did I miss?
Taz x ;D
-
Not much Taz ;D - you'll have to read through from the start of the thread.
CLKD is eating a lot of fruit & cutting down on sugar & she is reporting on her findings.
Cazi x

Oh - I thought it said "removed my post" ;D ;D ;D
Taz x

I haven't read it either but then I've been away. It takes long enough to catch up on the menopause topics so the chat ones usually get missed! I only noticed because it was locked in the All Things Meno Section! I see that several posts in that section have been moved and it's Monday morning so maybe Emma is having a spring clean? I have noticed that posts get moved around from one section to another fairly regularly. Most of us don't have the time nor inclination to worry about things like that unless something was way off topic in a particular section - but it looks like Emma usually picks these up without any input from us!

Yeah- she moved a post of mine too. I've really only got time to read the general meno section but it does look like she's been doing some housekeeping to tidy things up. Otherwise, our off topic posts take up room in the wrong filing cabinet!

Am stuffing plums and peas from the pods ::). At least I'm not as hungry now :)

If I moan about heartburn remind me :poke2:

That'll be an early morning rush to the loo then!

;D it was but not until 7.30 a.m. Slept through. Woke full of anxiety but my breakfast tasted different - some bits were sweet and enjoyable :o. Have managed a cuppa and when the minutes silence is over will reach for a banana.
-
I have been inspired CLKD, I am going to try and change my eating/drinking habits. When I did the supermarket shop this morning I bought cherries, blueberries, strawberries and nectarines. I deliberately didn't go down the cake/biscuit aisle.
I drink about 5 cups of tea a day (with one sugar). I am going to drink more water.
-
Let us know how you get on?!?
I've had a large slice of melon which was really 'going over' so right to eat ;)
Only 1 light loo trip so far but my body still thinks it's hungry :(
-
It's such a difficult balance.
My IBS has been in overdrive so I'm cutting back for a few days. I'm going on holiday soon and I don't want any trouble on the journey.
Then it's a case of reintroducing slowly. I've been over doing both the fruit and veg.
One big question I ask myself.......Why do I never learn ::)
Mrs Brown
-
I NEVER learn! which is why when my gut goes into anxiety mode, I can't over come those feelings :'(. Over and over and ........
You have a lot of stress which won't help the gut!
