Hello I've just had a blood test for thyroid which included vitamin b12 which showed as low at 303. The normal range is up to 350 but everything I read on thyroid forum and others say under 500 is deficient..I'm only scrutinising these results as I want to get to the cause of my chronic insomnia. Anyone else have info on this or had illness due to low levels of b12..I'm off to doctors Wednesday to discuss a few issues and forearmed is forewarned info wise thank you
-
My b12 was 197 and they wouldn't acknowledge it. They gave me a leaflet on pernicious anaemia and said to eat cereal with fortified vitamins. I had loads of the symptoms on the leaflet.
Symptoms can be present under 500 that's true
My MCV and MCH and Red blood cells were all out of range too indicating the b12d
Do your research , there's a fantastic Facebook group called b12 deficiency and pernicious anaemia support group or something like that but they are very good d

Thank you...I'll look at that fb page. I'm not expecting much help off the gp her favourite word is ' normal' with any test I just think they can't be bothered until you are literally dying in front of them..do you take a supplement at all there's so many to choose from and probably rubbish alot if them.
-
The best one is sublingual
I've been off all supplements now for months and really should go back for full bloods again as some symptoms aren't explained by menopause but are on the that list for b12
-
Thanks Annie our doctors won't prescribe anything until your levels are under 100.that's so wrong but to be expected..
-
It's so bad because by then there could be irreversible neurological damage x
-
I know but my gps look at me age my past and say it's either menopause or depression or anxiety based..you name it it's related to one of them 3 all the time.....or stress of course....well yes I'm stressed because I survive off 3 hours sleep every night and constantly feel ill.....I've just looked at sublingual vit b12 but there's so many do you receommend any in particular..I take menopace which has vit b12 in it but it has about 20 other vitamins so I'm not sure if it has enough to get my level higher..thank you

I think it's called Jarrows ? Look on Amazon
And join that fb forum , they are a wealth of knowledge xx

Check out 'Doctor in the House' on BBC iplayer. One chap on there had his life transformed after being give B12 by the TV doc.

Also google Dr Chandy, an NHS gp who believes anyone with lowish levels but has symptoms should be given injections, he has had patients who were diagnosed with ms walking again, it never was ms, it was b12d
-
My b12 was 336 and i too was told anything above 140 was ok :o not according to the pernicious aneamia group, they said between 200 - 400 was mild and under 200 was severe.
I have bought myself a sublingual spray of methylcolbamin which is the most absorbant type of b12 and use one spray under my tongue a day. When I have my next thyroid test I am going to ask for the b12 to be checked again to see if the spray has increased the levels.
-
Thanks for all the info..the doctor in the house programme I Googled it its £30 for a months supply but if it works that ok but I scrolled down the reviews and quite a few people said that supplement he took has a lot of 'nasty' ingredients and it was no good..so I'm not sure..
And countrybumpkin have your symptoms improved on your tongue spray?? I will push at my doctors but like I've mentioned I've got a few tests to discuss and my insomnia so no doubt I'll get the eye rolling and the look meaning she thinks I'm a hypochondriac...as if..just want my life back..this one is rubbish...

The trouble with supplements is that they don't necessarily reach cell level just serum level so a false reading.
It's best to be retested WITHOUT any b12 supplements for 4 months
It's said that sublingual is almost as good as the injections
The saddest part is that b12 injections are 65p each
-
Annie I was planning on taking the b12 lozenges which are sublingual so are they good enough do you think ?
-
They are but just be mindful that if you wanted to be retested for your serum level it'd be false reading unless you're clear of supplements for at least 4 months x
-
Thanks Annie for the info about the results if you are on injections or supplements. I have a friend who has injections and she is tested every so often but assume they take the injections into account when reading the results?
when i was researching there seemed to be two types of b12 you can get in supplements. All said that anything you swallow is a waste of time as it does not get beyond digestive system and undertongue spray was most effective of those tested It then said that methylcolbamin was the most absorbed.
Will tell my gp I am using the spray and see what she says.
-
Yes spray and sublinguals are best over tablets
I'm sure NICE guidelines say not to test once injections have started because it's a false reading and potentially could be the reason the injections are withdrawn
I do stand by my post recently that you can't overdose on b12 as my levels were once OVER 2000, and the doc laughed saying what on earth am I eating for that result and I said sublinguals and they said ok that explains it
-
Hi Peroxideblader,
I take BIOVEA vit B12 1000mcg sublingual and it worked well, my levels rose to more than 600 after taking it daily for 3 months and now I just take it once a week and my levels have been stable for one year.

Ah ok...well I haven no other choice but to take tablets as my go won't give me injections not a chance ...like I said unless you're almost zero they consider you as normal....I know you can buy your own to inject but theres no way I could infect myself most days I'm lucky I can see straight never mind use a needle. Has anyone on here taken lozenges or tablets and seen an improvement in their symptoms at all.?
-
I'd think The only way you'll benefit and see improvement from sublinguals is if your symptoms are due to low b12 and you are vegan
If you have pernicious anaemia only injections will work
My friend has 3 monthly injections and she hasn't felt any benefit
It's a minefield
-
I also read that if you have severe pernicious anaemia then only injections will make a difference but mild p a can be improved with sublingual application.
I know so many people who had severe p a and have been on injections for years. They all improved on injections and they all know when they need to have their injections sooner because of symptoms.

So many people who get the 3 monthly jabs end up self injecting during those 3 months because it just doesn't reverse their neurological damage, you shouldn't have to slip lower before the next injection I don't think
