Title: What's in your fridge and freezer
Post by: CLKD on March 14, 2017, 10:59:37 PM
two pots of chocolate mousse
3 packets of fresh salted butter
half a pot of yoghurt (his)
several types of cheese
one half filled jar of hot peppers in oil
1 slice of roast beef which the cat will have as a treat
several bottles of fizzy water and 3 small bottles of 'coke'
2 chocolate eclairs
1 egg custard

we keep a stock of dried pastas in the pantry along with: baked beans, sweet corn, peas, rice pudding: jams, chutneys (mainly home made); soy sauce, mustard, horse-radish, tomato paste and tins of chopped toms..

So not much to make a picnic with .........

Freezer 1 is full of trout, bread, steak, weighed up packets of fresh mince, fresh chicken ..
Freezer 2 is used for ice blocks, food waste waiting to go to the weekly collection

cheese, eggs, milk, yogurt, olive spread, coffee, tomatoes, celery, mushrooms, broccoli, several pots of leftovers.

So, do you keep eggs and tomatoes in the fridge or not?  I have seen differing advice about this?

My Mum has always kept her eggs in the fridge but I never have. I do keep tomatoes in the fridge though.

Salad, yogurt, low fat cheese spread, 2 bottles of beer for visitors, soya milk, butter, two small cans of diet coke, diluting orange juice, butter, probiotics.

Freezer full of Iceland stuff - quinoa which I love, peas, sweetcorn, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, small loaf from months ago which I really should bin.

A very different set up from 10 years ago!!

Haha, CLKD, was this following our conversation last night?  ;)

Mine is always heavily stocked, I usually have one or two Ocado drops per week depending on whether I'm going to be out shopping myself.

Fridge; ss milk, eggs, butter, cheese (always parmesan, cheddar, gruyere and usually others), full fat yoghurt plain and fruit varieties, selection of cold meats (prosciutto, pulled ham hock, a ring of chorizo), smoked houmous, tub of white crab meat, chargrilled artichokes, tub of olives, fresh anchovy fillets, seafood antipasti, tub of prawns, plate of cooked chicken, some sea bass fillets, some salmon fillets, chicken thighs, smoked trout fillets. Salad (mixed leaves, peashoots, rocket, peppers, fennel bulb, cucumber, radishes, red cabbage, cress, avocados, spring onions). Veggies (Sweetheart cabbage, savoy, bag of spinach, long stem broccoli, mange tout, sugar snaps and baby corn, sprouts, carrots, parsnips, swede, some red chillies, some ginger root, portobellino mushrooms) Tubs of grapes, raspberries and blueberries and coconut. In the door I have the usual mayos, Chinese sauces, mustards etc etc. I also have a couple of boxes of the Benecol drink stuff that I'm taking daily. White wine. Low alcohol beer and normal beer.

The freezer has, petit pois, beef cheeks, salmon, sausages, bacon, chicken thighs, chicken breasts, some batch cooked meals (too many to mention), frozen berries, ice creams, ice cubes, tortillas/wraps, bags of baby squid, mussels, sardines and also two bags of mixed seafood. Some naan bread and two bags of sun dried tomatoes.

Eggs in the fridge, tomatoes in bowls in the kitchen that are plucked like fruit!

Haha, you'd always be very welcome: I grew up in a massive household where my mother was constantly feeding the five thousand, I've never been very controlled with cooking quantities. The more the merrier is my motto!!  ;D

I'm not a very good cook! I  loved the picnic options you gave CLKD. See I would never think of half those things!

I bet you're better than you think you are Megamind! Some worry that because they're not cooking 'exotic' dishes that they are not good cooks. Some of the best and most delicious meals I've ever experienced have been the simplest.

Some people love to cook, some don't. I'm really glad that both my kids have developed a passion for cooking but both of them started out finding a cook book that really interested them and religiously following a recipe. Once one was achieved it gave them the confidence to find another and so on. I always said to them, if they can read they can cook. The ability to cook without a recipe just comes with experience. I love it when they contact me excited about something they've just produced!!

Have you the basic cooking bibles like Delia's complete cookery course and the Good Housekeeping Cookery book? They are both simple and easy to follow and great starters. xx

Yep Elizabethrose - you triggered a thought and I was quick enough to open a new thread B4 I forgot  ;D - can anyone tell that I don't cook 'cos I don't know what's in the freezer.  Can't cook, won't  :-X .........

I forget about the milk in the fridge door, for our morning porridge/muesli.  Cooking relaxing  :o - by the time I've read the recipe Himself has the meal on a plate in front of me  ;D

I hate cooking, I can think of nothing worse to do. I really wish I liked it, but living alone really doesn't give much incentive. I would love to have someone cook for me though.  :)

Megamind bet your kids love your food if you ask them. Some of the quickest things are the most delicious!! I was out to dinner one night last week and had some griddled squid. It had been marinaded in olive oil, lemon, parsley and chilli and than flash griddled for less than a minute and it was to die for. So simple so quick!

CLKD I honestly can't imagine living with a man who can cook. My hubby has had to on a couple of occasions but tends to not be able to coordinate the timings so the fish is ready, the potatoes are still hard and he hasn't yet prepared the veggies. The end result? Not so good! Also really meagre quantities - really weird!

nearly50 I love to cook but will cheat sometimes when alone and opt for M and S. I know what you mean by no incentive but I regularly batch cook when hubby is away, then eat a portion and freeze the rest. In fact I've always done that with anything but fish: I cook double the quantities and freeze the excess. It's great to be able to pull from the freezer when you haven't got time to prepare from scratch especially with long slow cooked dishes, like casseroles and Bolognese etc which may be cooking for 4-5 hours.

This evening Himself produced a ready cooked mince meal with tomatoes, added to freshly boiled rice and hey presto!  ;)

I could cook if I had to.  After all, I can read  ::).
