Title: Help with red dry eye lids
Post by: renee on March 12, 2017, 10:26:29 PM
Hi Everyone

Came off Hrt a month ago and my symptoms have returned.....this time though im also getting red, sore eyelids. I bought a spray to help moisten my eyes but its not working. I googled this problem and Omega 3 capupsules in high strength helps which Im buying tomorrow.

I seem to spend a small fortune on vitamins, vaginal creams, dry skin creams, hair masks as everuthing seems so dry!!! I drink alot of water every day also so god knows where I go from here.

Any advice appreciated xx

Was there a particular reason to stop HRT?

Hi Renee,
I get this often after I started peri, including dry eyes as well. Try putting warm clean towel twice daily - brings immediate relief! I also boil two camomile teabags , let them cool down a bit and put them on the eyelids twice daily.

Omega 3s are a solution but will take time to work. Taking Omega 3 longer term will be a good prevention.

I also use Systain balance eyedrops which also bring immediate relief.

Good luck! Hope this is helpful.

Hi renee

I wondered the same as ariadne.

When my peri started I was hit by a massive increase in allergies and intolerances and also developed Rosacea. Very luckily one of my GPs is a skin specialist and referred me to his boss a consultant dermatologist. I manage to keep it totally at bay but developed ocular rosacea which is a pain to manage. One of the symptoms is blepharitis which I can control by twice daily eye bathing in warm previously boiled water. I can't use any of my previous skincare and makeup around my eyes but have very luckily found an eye cream which is hugely soothing and non irritating. Most things irritate to the point they can make me bleed.

In the morning after showering I bathe my eyes in medium hot water (boiled from the kettle) using cotton pads and then apply Eau Thermal Avène Soin apaisant contour des yeux for yeux sensibles, basically soothing eye cream for sensitive eyes. I buy mine in France but Boots sell it here. The dermatologist explained it's a case of a process of elimination, stop everything around the eyes then add back one at a time to find if any particular product is irritating. I'd been using a Clinique eye cream for years, had to stop that. Then found Dr Hauschka eye cream which was brilliant for ages then had to suddenly stop that. The Avene is by far the most comfortable to use especially if you apply it immediately after the warm water bathe when the skin is still damp as the cream goes on without dragging the skin.

I can't use any makeup now on my lids and can only use one Clinique mascara and an eye liner from a French company called Eyecare which I buy online through a company called Butterflies. I have searched extensively for makeup that doesn't irritate my eyes and it is very very difficult and also expensive. My rejects are passed to my mother, daughter and sister so at least not wasted!

Give this a try, consultant felt that a great many lid problems are caused by a reactivity to a product and women ignore it because they've used the product for years.

If I do have a flare up, the GP prescribes an eye drop without preservative that comes in daily use tubes. Works a treat when you feel the horrible 'something in the eye' sensation.

Good luck x
