Can any ladies out there who have used both Provera and Utrogestan let me me know which of the two you found the least sedating.
Finding Utrogestan very sedating and I am thinking of trying Provera and any advice would be helpful.
Many thanks

Hi there Lanzalover - Dana is the one you want for this as she used Provera, and has used Utrogestan but doesn't get on with it.
Objectively Utrogestan - being "natural" progesterone - is more sedating purely because you have to take it in such large doses as it is unstable. All the synthetic progestogens can be taken in much smaller doses but last longer in the system, and I don't think have the same sedative properties as progesterone - although have some different side effects in some women. If you've been pregnant - think of the tiredness and exhaustion you feel especially early on - and levels of progesterone are extremely high then.
I'm sure Dana will be along later - but as she's on the other side of the world she will hopefully be sleeping right now (not sure of the time difference)!

Hi Lanzalover
Yes I use Provera and I have used Utrogestan. I personally prefer Provera because it gives me less side effects, and you can also alter the dose and the routine more easily, but I guess it's different for everyone. All you can do is give it a try and see what happens.

Hi Dana
Many thanks for the reply could I ask you a couple questions re Provera
a) I have used Utrogestan on both a conti and seqi basis and have never had any breakthrough bleeding on either regime. As I will be 59 soon I would prefer not to have a bleed do you think I would be able to start conti Provera at 2.5 mgs daily and increase to 5mgs should any breakthrough bleeding arise.
b) Sorry but I don't understand what you mean by "you can alter the routine more easily" it's probably me! do you mean you can use Provera either orally or vaginaly or something else ?
Many thanks

Sorry what I meant about altering the dose is that you can't cut a Utrogestan capsule and use a smaller dose if you wanted to like you can with Provera.
I haven't tried a conti routine with Provera yet, but I am planning on doing it this year sometime. The only thing that is stopping me is that I'm currently losing weight and because I know I can gain a bit of weight when I take the 5mg for 12 days, I'd rather wait a few more months before I try it. Currently I'm on a two monthly routine, so having a period every two months isn't bothering me, but it's certainly something I don't want to do for too much longer.
Like you, my plan is to try 2.5mg every day. If that doesn't work my other plan is to take 5mg for 21-25 days, similar to the conti Utrogestan routine.
