Title: Supraventricular Tachycardia
Post by: toffeecushion on February 16, 2017, 11:06:34 AM
Does anyone here suffer with SVT?  Mine started about 6 years ago and I was wondering if it was related to hormones and the menopause.  Trying to find a reason behind them.

Hope you don't mind the edit to your post but I had to google what SVT is:

What is supraventricular tachycardia?
Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) means that from time to time your heart beats very fast for a reason other than exercise, high fever, or stress.

My husband has always had this and it does seem to be getting worse as he gets older.   No idea why, and no idea why it happens in the first place.  He doesn't have problems with menopause  ;D (well not his anyway) but has had a few health problems over the last couple of years.

Thanks Emma, I would have to google it too! I'd like to suggest a section on initials, acronyms, abbreviations under the "A to Z of menopause and medical conditions" section, or somewhere else...

Do you think yours was linked to your hormones or had you had it a while?

My daughter was diagnosed with it when she was 20. She gets bouts fairly regularly, had a full panel of tests the cardiologist said he could prescribe beta blockers if needs be but it doesnt seem to worry her much, now that she knows its harmless, think its just one of those things, I thought it may have been brought on by the OCP that she takes for her skin but he did not seem to think so. Either way I wouldnt worry about it if it is not inhibiting you in any way.

I have SVT and the first episode was 7 years ago so could be hormone related, but bending over seems to trigger it. I take beta blockers to try to prevent it. Had to have adenosine twice to bring heart rate back to normal....it's very scary!!

Bending over triggers mine as well, but this last this last time I was walking.  How long do yours last?  How do you stop them?

After the last time I was given a syringe by the paramedics to blow really hard into and that does stop them.....otherwise it's a trip to a and e to get adenosine.....
The other thing that was suggested is to cough really really hard and to keep doing it until they stop.
Unfortunately a couple of times they've gone on for nearly 2  hours at over 200bpm and its knackering..I hate it!!!

Yes my daughter had an episode @ work on Friday, it went on for an hour or so, she said she started to feel a bit light headed but it then passed over. She has not taken the beta blockers prescribed for her, but I am thinking it may be a good idea for her to keep them handy, does anyone know if taking one, once an episode has started, will help to slow the heart rate down? She has not had the  the episodes that often of late, fortunately, and is not keen to take the tablets daily unless absolutely necessary, am not sure though if they would work so quickly during an episode, or if it something like Thyroxine, that needs to build up in the body?

Cassie, my arrythmias have not yet been 'caught' on a monitor, but when I get the fast one (which may be SVT, but may be anything) taking a beta blocker does work.  Just thought I'd mention that.  I take Bisoprolol.
