Hi. I'm knew to this site and wondered if anybody could give me some advice. I'm 52 and have been going through perimenopause for last 2 years and had my last period in February this year. I've gone through divorce etc in last 2 years and eventually decided to go an HRT in July as I was really struggling with everything. I'm on Prempak-c 0.15mg. Firstly I seem to have really bad PMT around day 25 and am very emotional for a few days is this normal as never had this sort of pmt before? Also I'm thinking of coming off in January is it ok to just go cold turkey as I read somewhere you ought to speak to Dr but mine are hopeless. Thanks

Hi sue.e1
:welcomemm:
Do you mean Prempak 1.25? If so then this is one of the high dose HRT types - it's made from a mix of horse oestrogens which are stronger than our own and this is the highest dose of this type. It may well be that this type does not suit you and also perhpas the dose is too high?
If you feel OK on it otherwise (except for the pms) then you could try the lower dose which is 0.625 mg. If you look they are all listed here:
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/perimeno.php
Otherwise there are plenty of others you could try - for example Femoston 2/10 contains a progestogen which seems to cause fewer pms symptoms, and the oestrogen ( estradiol) is bio-identical with ours. If you wanted to try one thing at a time - you could do as above - try a lower dose. If after 3 months you still feel the same then perhaps change to Femoston but you are also changing the oestrogen too. However women are usually fine with estradiol - it is the progestogens which can cause side effects.
No need to come off completely if it has helped with your symptoms overall - it's just a case of finding the right one - you can benefit from added oestrogen for some years yet!
If you do decide to come off then a gradual cessation is best - so even in this case it would be better to go down to a reduced dose of Prempak before stopping otherwise your symptoms could return with a crash. Don't just go cold turkey!

Thanks, it is the 0.625 mg dose I am on, so would it be ok to go cold turkey on this dose?

Why stop? It's a replacement treatment. HRT can protect heart and bones as well as giving relief from symptoms though it can, sadly, be a bit Trial and Error >:(
Maybe make a list of symptoms and decide which you want eased first? Some ladies find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary useful as it is very easy to forget how ill we can feel on the days we felt 'better' ::)
It can take a while B4 noting benefits/not when taking HRT or Anti-depressant medication.
How is your diet? Eating regularly, little and often, throughout the 24 hours may ease that sudden dip in mood.
Browse round. Make notes?

I still wouldn't go cold turkey. I would try a different type of HRT and see if it suits you better - like Femsoton.
