About 30 years ago a friend of mine had problems with breakouts and she went to a dermatologist (we were both in our late 20s at the time). He told her the best things for your face are dove soap and sorbolene cream. Forget about all the fancy schmancy stuff in pretty bottles that cost a week's wages. Use the basics.
I've done that ever since she told me and I'm now 57, but whenever I tell anyone my age they are always genuinely shocked. I've literally had dozens of people tell me I look at least 10 years younger than I am. Now maybe I've just got good genes, although neither of my parents looked "young for their ages" and neither does my brother, so I like to think it's because I never got conned into spending hundreds of dollars on empty promises and cons.
Mind you there is a downside to looking young. No one ever wants to give me a senior's discount..lol...

I am afraid only thing that has sent my skin back probably 20 years looks feels really good is HRT.
As smooth as a baby's bottom wrinkles have softened.
However try Aveeno.

Never heard of sorbolene cream, is that available in the UK?
I have always used Nivea, and will stick with it. For skin I really like Palmer's cocoa butter, as I love the smell.

I'm a big fan of Clinique - Yes, it is a bit more expensive but a little goes a long way. I bought a pot of the Boots night cream, that is supposed to be so good, and it ran out quite quickly - it also made me itch a bit!!! I don't expect any cream or potion to necessarily stop or reduce lines etc. but I do like my skin to glow with health.
Needless to say; a good diet, fresh air, good sleep and plenty of exercise will be the best anti ageing for all parts of our bodies.
I find the Clinique moisturisers make the skin look healthy and don't irritate. One pot of dramatically Different Moisturiser will last at least a year as one small squirt does the whole face - that's value for money.
I find many creams with SPF ( which is a good idea to prevent sun damage) will aggravate my skin, and again, the Clinique day creams with sun block are great for me.
For body lotion, I love the Neutregena lotion - goes on well and isn't sticky. It's like everything else, trial and error till you find something that works fro you - BUT don't expect miracles. DG x

I have never got on with moisturisers. They were either too greasy or made my skin red. I can't stand any sticky residue. I used a very light Simple moisturiser for years, then my skin changed and it just wasn't enough any more.
I have been using the Boots stuff - will give Clinique a whirl.
I used a Simple Age resisting moisturiser on my neck and chest and top of arms, which I tried and didn't like on my face but really liked on my arms. I will get some more for the summer.

dahliagirl - Clinique will give you samples, so you can try things before your buy - or you can buy a sample starter set.
Like everything - it's about finding what works for you. The Clinique creams do leave a slightly sticky feel to start with but this absorbs. I love the glow that their creams give - my skin is really not that great and I still get the occasional outbreak of spots (I'm 60 !!) and dry areas but I started to get comments on how wonderful my skin looked since using the Clinique creams.
BTW - I DO NOT WORK FOR Clinique. ;D

I have been through so many things over the years but they are all full of chemicals which my skin really dislikes and costs a lot for the privilege.
the only thing I put on my face now is Organic Moroccan Argan oil and my skin is lovely. Apparently it is all that the moroccan ladies use on their skin and hair. I also use it as a hair conditioner.
All my mother ever used was Palmolive soap and baby lotion and her skin was beautiful right up to when she died aged 82.
so many toiletries have so many chemicals in and a lot of cleansers and washes have the dreaded SLS in too >:(
-
babyjane - your family must have good genes. If I used Palmolive soap I'd be an itching mess - I can only wash with unscented vegetable soap.
I do agree about chemicals though - scary what goes into things, particularly in cheaper products. I've heard that Argan oil is good - worth a try. DG x

The pure organic moroccan argan oil is excellent. Not to be confused with products that claim to contain it (among other unpronouncable things!)

I use Boots No 7 protect and perfect - the one for my age - serum and night cream ( not day cream as it has SP factors in it and I want my Vit D :)). Haven't tried Clinique - might give that a go like the idea of a good glow! You know what it's like - sticking with the one you've been using.
Aha babyjane - now I have a potential use for the small bottle of Argan oil I have been hoarding for 3 years - didn;t really know what to do with it. Hope I can find it.....
I totally agree re the diet, fresh air and exercise - I mean what harm a few wrinkles if you have a healthy glow to your skin from inner health - but yes HRT probably does help reduce signs of ageing - although how can one say as you don't know what you would have looked like without it?!

I like to look after my skin but beyond that I'm not fussed about how I look but then I interited mother's and grandmother's genes and I know I don't look my age at all. :)
I have never worn eye make up due to sensitive eyes and blepharitis so the delicate skin round my eyes hasn't been pulled around over the years. I guess my specs protect it from the wind too 8)

I`ve used Olay all my life. Tried the various different ones but still always come back to the complete lightweight day fluid. I don`t like the thick creams. My skin is quite good, not many wrinkles, and I`m usually taken for younger. Although don`t you think that`s much more of and attitude thing these days? We are not like the preceding generation. When I think of my mum at my age...

I use Boots Protect and Perfect serum and moisturiser but I find the things that have helped my skin the most are Dove soap, fresh air , hrt and juicing green vegetables. It may sound a bit out there but my skin glows if I have a glass of green juice daily. If I leave off awhile it starts to lose the glow.
One more thing, I find Clarins instant smooth Perfecting Touch gives a lovely smooth, even finish as a base for a light foundation.

I would have thought that it is available because it's the base that is used in a lot of moisturisers. You just pay a fraction of the cost because you don't get the pretty packaging, the fragrance, or the "name". I haven't bought any for a while, because a 500ml bottle lasts me for ages, but I think I've paid around $5 for it. I can get it at any of our major supermarkets or chain stores. I'm sure pharmacies would have it too, but they might be more expensive.

I have to say Suzanne that hrt has helped the most. Before starting it two years ago my neck was going very crepey but now that's gone. For how long is another matter but I'll enjoy it for now!

Suzzanne - where do you get your calcium from??? All that water!!! Do you exercise a lot and therefore sweat a great deal?? I believe that drinking too much can be as bad as drinking too little - it can flush away nutrients? We actually get quite a bit of our hydration from food.
Lack of skin tone is down to lack of oestrogen and gravity does the rest. !!!!

I've been using Clinique Redness Solutions moisturiser recently as I have been diagnosed with rosecea and thought it worth trying as recommended on this forum. The cost made me hesitate, far more than I want to pay, but my red nose demanded giving it a whirl. My dry skin seems to like it ( I have had problems with many moisturisers in the past, sensitive and allergies etc) and I find a little goes a lot further than cheaper makes, so it seems more cost effective than first appeared. My face has calmed down, maybe because of very gentle, cleansing and moisturising. So I would consider other Clinique moisturisers after this experience.
