WOW!
-
Maine probably August or September to meet new grandchild due in July. Have vague plans to go to Sweden, but hadn't planned to go to the USA next year. Depends on finances.
-
I have already provisionally planned a return to Bologna in Sept for 1 week to practise my Italian with a friend. We do a half day course. Will book it once i have got my oncoming hospital appointments out of the way. For my main summer trip, I am considering Latvia/Lithuania or Romania.
-
Not sure. 40th wedding anniversary next September. I've said I don't fancy long haul journey, but do fancy very posh hotel.
-
Thailand, hopefully some snorkeling and maybe diving. 8)
-
No plans yet but I can't manage more than 4-4.5 hrs on plane so it won't be anywhere as adventurous as you lot.
-
Yorkshire then ;D
-
Lots next year as we both have special birthdays :) New Forest in March, Kent in April/May, Northumberland in June, London in September and London again in November for the Remebrance service, making a long weekend of it.
Can't wait for the Holidays 2018 thread. If all is well we are going to Canada, stopping off in Iceland en route :gym:
-
Crikey! ;D Sort your Passports out then?!?
-
Just realised next year will be our 40th wedding anniversary so maybe we could do something special.
-
How lovely!
-
Munich in May and Lago Majore in July. That's all I know for now. My sis wants a joint holiday somewhere midway (Canada - Europe) plus it has to be beach holiday so not sure where and when 8)
Milamam x
-
Lake Maggiorre ? :-\ ?
Is there anywhere mid-way between there and here ;D - ? Iceland ?
-
Qantas to fly from London to Perth, Australia non-stop - from 2018 :o
-
Slightly in limbo at the moment because Hubby's just retired and I'm jumping through another hoop in July so we haven't thought about holidays yet.
-
Which hoop might that be, remind me ? :-\
-
We're planning a long weekend in Oxford (we're going to stay at The Randolph!), and a trip to France to have a few days in Disneyland (we love it - we call it the Happy Place) and a few days visiting the Normandy beaches. Other than that, we'll have most weekends and at least one full week at our caravan on the East Coast.
-
Which hoop might that be, remind me ? :-\
Um, well.....the pursuit of another bit of paper with my name and "organ" on it.
-
Majorca in May, back to same hotel as last year, but found the prices have increased quite significantly this year. Then a City break maybe in Oxford or Edinburgh in September.
-
Starting our year with a funeral :sigh: so have to go away sooner than planned.
-
We have a city break in Feb to Bath
Annual Easter family get away to Yarmouth
There'll be various camping trips
Contemplating city break to Edinburgh (looks like it's cheaper to fly)
Spain in September
March - London to see Motown Musical
X
-
Another few days away, don't know what wifi will be like nor when we will be home .......... we had planned a trip to Shrewsbury after New Year, good job I hadn't booked anywhere ::)
-

Booked our holiday yesterday. 1 week in Jersey for our 40th Anniversary, at beginning of September. Neither of us fancied long haul. In fact doubt we'll ever go long haul again. Not so bad if you can afford business class possibly, but economy is so uncomfortable on long journeys.
-
We're in the process of sorting out our holiday for this summer. DH is 50 and wanted to celebrate it in Fuerteventura (our favourite holiday destination). He also wanted to include his family in Holland so we have booked a massive villa (sleeps 18) and will be joined by his parents, 2 brothers, 1 wife, 4 kids (quite grown up), my son and hopefully my sister and her partner for at least a long weekend. The logistics of it all have been giving us headaches but it all seems to be falling into place now 8)
-
How exciting ?!?
-
I SO need a holiday! Not much chance until at least Easter though. :'(
-
Days out then PF?
-
Nice post. We're going to the Champagne region of France in May, Sicily in June and Australia (Sydney & Gold Coast) to visit our stepson in November. Holidaying has got to be our favourite thing these days. Lots of places to go before we get too old to travel x
-
GO FOR IT! If I didn't suffer with anxiety I would be up and at it!
Do make sure that Passports, Visas etc. and any vaccinations are up to date!!!!
-
Greyhoundgal, I sympathise with the logistics having done similar 5 years ago to get 7 out to Florida. 4 from here & 3 from Notts. All meeting in London day before flight out. Fortunately had a wonderful local travel agent who managed to organise it all for me. Airline got confused, but we all got there & had adjacent rooms at hotel too. Not sure I could organise as many as you though. Hopefully when the time comes, you will all have a fabulous time.
-
As long as everyone has travel details and the address of the location, with mobile phone numbers exchanged: would you buy phones out there, apparently it's cheaper? : you will meet up eventually .......
Making plans for who will pay for stuff is important too: i.e. will each pay for the food/wine and be responsible for the cooking on a certain day?
-

Have just booked a place on a 1 week Italian course in Bologna in September. Now have to book flights. Am hoping to do an Explore trip in about May but haven't decided where. Possibly Spain or Portugal or Latvia/Estonia.
-
I love Italy. My favourite holiday destination.
Having 3 nights in Bournemouth, next month, but not sure about a main holiday yet. Have too much going on this year so may do a 'last minute' in September. :scottie:

Thanks - ours will be slightly different. We're going out for two weeks but the rest of the family is just coming for one week of that. Obviously the Dutch contingent will be travelling direct from Holland so all we need to do is meet them at the airport, help them with their hire car (already booked) and then get them to follow us to the villa. My son will come out on that same day although I suspect at a different time but I'll probably just drive out to the airport myself to pick him up when he lands. Sister & partner will only be able to make a long weekend out there, again, will need meeting at the airport. At the moment it all seems to be coming together...we'll see. It will either be totally brilliant or the biggest nightmare ever!
-
I would love to go to the Italian Lakes :-\
-
They are beautiful.
You could always go in your camper van. 8)
-
Slightly in limbo at the moment because Hubby's just retired and I'm jumping through another hoop in July so we haven't thought about holidays yet.
Not jumping through the hoop this July, after all, so we may go somewhere. Decided to jump through hoop next summer, instead......take a longer run at it.......... ::) I'd really love to go to France, my favourite place after Scotland. Even if we don't, I can still "go there" in my mind, by listening to Mireille Matthieu on youtube.......formidable! (pronounced the French way)
-
The camper isn't large enough for me to travel into Europe though many do. Although my anxiety is less in recent months I think planning would be a step too far. [however, having seen the concept RV released from Plans today ;-) ]
-
Had a day off work yesterday due to working today and booked two holidays! One is a walking weekend in Whitby for my birthday weekend in March. The other is my main trip of the year to Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. https://www.explore.co.uk/holidays/walking-holiday-in-estonia-latvia-and-lithuania/prices'display=prices :D Going in May. 1st Explore trip for 3 years. Now need to save more holiday money before booking anything else.
-

also one of my favourite/regular destinations. Really want to see Puglia but may have to do a group trip there because it isn't as good for public transport and I don't drive. Maybe in 2018.
-
Can't put my head around booking flights yet. We are hoping to go to stay with our son in August in Maine , USA, as our new grandchild is due in July. We stay in a lovely cabin in woods by a lake. I need to get some answers to health issues first. First complete diagnosis and see the consultant next month.
I'm hoping to have a couple of days away somewhere for my birthday. Not too far away and probably including a NT property. Then in June/July we were planning to go to Denmark and Sweden with my DD and family. They are camping, while we plan to hire a RV. (All camped out after camping for 6 months when travelling through NZ and OZ! :o) Again we will have to wait and see.
-
Ju Ju we are also having a weekend away for my birthday next month as it is a big bithday this time :)
then we have a holiday booked in June as hubby also has a big birthday in the summer :)
-
Not sure if this counts as a holiday, but I've got a whistle-stop trip to Norwich in April, for a cathedral-organ-visit day.....will stay with sis and we'll have a Chinese together the evening before.
-
Hubby and I want to go somewhere warm for a week but we promised daughter and boyfriend we would also have a week away with them maybe at Easter.
-

We'll have to have a MM virtual party! My birthday is a big one, just not with a 0 in it!
-
that would be fun :cake: :drunk: :ola:  :party09:
-
;D :drunk: (it will have to be virtual drunkenness! I've gone off alcohol completely! What a sad state of affairs!)
-
I don't drink anyway. I never enjoy myself if I do as I react badly to it. fruit punch? :)
-
Virtual fruit punch sounds tasty!
-
Sounds good to me too
:cupcake:
:wish:
-
Don't venture to the UAE - they have 4" snow :o
-
We've just booked two nights at the Randolph Hotel in Oxford for hubby's birthday in mid-March. He's wanted to stay there for ages (we are both big fans of Inspector Morse, Lewis and Endeavour - the Randolph makes regular appearances!), more so after we had a day in Oxford last year that was too rushed - we definitely wanted to take more time over the place. So, now he's got his new car (eminently suitable for a Morse-themed break ;) ), we've booked. I'm really looking forward to it (don't like having to put the dog in kennels, but needs must).
-
There are 'sitting' firms, we have Barking Mad locally ;)
-
She's been to the kennel before, CLKD, and it absolutely fine - it's me that has the separation issue ;D
-
;D ........
-
me too, when ours was in the vet for a teeth clean recently my anxiety was sky high ::)
-
My anxiety has been bothersome, so much so that I can't think about leaving home :'(
-
we need a virtual trip for you. Where would you like to go?
-
Italian Lakes - thinking about it though makes me turn cold :-\
-
Lovely weekend away in the Great but freezing Wen seeing various offspring - returned home to gloriously warm west country sunshine :sunny:
Hurdity :) x

That sounds fantastic. We are fans of those programmes too. We spent a day in Oxford years ago and did the Morse tour it was brilliant .
-
A month to go before first holiday of the year - looking forward to it :)
Anyone else on hols soon or at Easter?
Hurdity x
-
We're spending a weekend at Robin Hoods Bay at Easter, hubby doesn't consider going away in this country a holiday but I'm looking forward to it x
-
Going to Lanzarote at the end of April cann't come soon enough especially as I was convinced we were going at the end of this month wishful thinking on my part perhaps!
Lanzalover x
-
No holidays booked for us this year, total house renovations get priorities sadly. :sigh:
Might manage to get away end of year ;)
-
Hi sparkle
Yes it's a bit of a giveaway really !
Lanzalover x
-
You don't need to go on holiday Dazned, you're already there ;).
We went to Robin Hood's Bay last year ....... it's STEEP ;D
-
Yes CLKD it's a really good pub crawl, as long as you start at the bottom and work your way up and not the other way round x
-
;D ......... there's a nice gem shop half way up 4 a break: and did you see one of the cottages on a programme recently - the patio has a large concrete sheep? It's lovely inside. Not that I would like to force the owner from his cottage but Oh That View! :D
-
I'll look out for the gem shop. We're staying in a b&b at the top we can never get in the cottages on the main drag they're always booked up way in advance. No I didn't see the program but it is a very pretty place. We're planning on doing a walk along the cliff tops x
-
It was our 1st visit to Whitby so we drove along the coast and as I had been to the Bay years ago and Himself hadn't, we had to go take a look-see ;)
-
Oxford trip on Thursday - really looking forward to it - it's been mental at work for the last few weeks and I can't wait to have a long weekend break.
Other than that, we were thinking of going to France later in the year - Disneyland for a couple of days, then to Normandy to visit the beaches. But we are having our kitchen and bathroom gutted and re-done, and probably the gardens done too (well - yards, but they desperately need repaving), so no further holidays away from our caravan this year. I'm fine with that - I love the 'van, and the new kitchen and bathroom are seriously exciting!
-
It's 10 years since we had a new bathroom, designed by yours truly, every night I look at it and give a sigh of contentment ;)
-
That sigh of contentment is what I'm hoping for - kitchen is over 15 years old, and needs some building work to make the best of the available space (part of the plan!), and the bathroom is the original fitted when the house was built - in 1954! Neither of us are fans of baths, so we're getting rid of it to make room for a big walk-in shower - I want the bathroom to look like a high-end hotel bathroom.
-
Looks like a couple of us are getting new bathrooms and kitchen ;)
Never mind high end hotel I will be happy if it resembles a bathroom ! ;D
-
I would never get rid of a bath, people prefer it when properties are sold ;) - wet room maybe? We had room for a large shower cubicle as well as my beloved bath which I intend to take with us if we move ;D - that'll be a crane then out of the bathroom window :whist:
-
People can prefer what they like when our house is eventually sold - if they want a bath, they can refit the bathroom! We have no intentions of selling, so there's no reason to keep the bath. Similarly, our kitchen is our only dining space, but to maximise the worktop and storage space, we are getting rid of the table and chairs and having a breakfast bar - we only have ourselves to please and that arrangement will suit us perfectly :)
-
Photos.? ;) .......... that's the advantage of a bit of space and moving the bathroom furniture around, the person sitting not far from me told me it couldn't be done so I put my head together with our Builder ;D - large sheet of paper, tape measure, job done 8). I lost count after £3,500 :-X ..... we drew out the Plan on the garage floor and as bits, i.e. loo, arrived they were stood on the Plan to make sure that they fitted B4 being lugged upstairs.
Many years ago we stayed in a posh B&B with a slipper bath - that would not be my choice as I kept slipping down ::) and wouldn't be able to read nor reach my cuppa from the floor ........
-
Our bathroom is so tiny, 5ft 8x 5ft 10, so the bath is shorter than standard and the shower is over the bath. We never use the bath except to wash the dog.
We plan to take out the bath and make a wet room or walk in shower as we get older. I do wish we had facilities upstairs and downstairs though but we gave up any plans of moving some years ago. We want to stay here now :)
three months until our holiday for this year :)
-
I think making a wet-room can be difficult to make sure that the room is 'tanked' to avoid seepage but once sorted, they can be useful. I wanted an en-suite but the upheaval would be Too Much! Our first shower was over the bath ....... OK until I had a bad back and couldn't get into/under either ::). I like going to Hotels to try out their facilities, what I hate are those that have an extractor ...... because we can hear everyone's going at night >:(. I like that one can now view potential hotel rooms etc. on line ......
-
Mothering Sunday looms >:( ::)
Packed
List of things to put in B4 we travel
Will be out of WiFi range, probably :-X
Stay safe!
-
You too.
Think calming thoughts ;)
-
 that'll be Sunday then, when I'm back - watching MotoGP ;)
-
what do you always tell me? '.......and breathe' xx
-
LOL
-
Anyone stayed in Shrewsbury recently, I'm looking for a hotel with parking and baths, not showers .........
-
Where you going cubagirl?
-
Heading off to Inverness. I love it there. We lived there for just over 3 years, broke my heart when we left. Hoping to get out & about taking photos.
-
Have a lovely time cubagirl, hope the weather's kind to you! x
-
Enjoy!
-
Have a lovely time :)
-
Sun, what's that Hurdity? We need proof. ;D ;D
-
Enjoy your holidays cubagirl and Hurdity

-
We have :sunny: here, no need to leave these shores!
Can't get enthused, me .......... :-\
-
I don't travel abroad although I have done in the past. Goodness me I struggle with travelling in this country. I feel sad sometimes as my husband enjoys travelling but if he wants to go far afield he has to take someone else or go alone.
-
Our trip to Inverness was a bit of a disaster. Hubby was ill & now I have his lurgy. Hacking cough!
Next trip to Notts in a few weeks time to look after grandkids whilst their folks head off to a friend's wedding.
-
Unfortunately the 🌞 here doesn't last.
-
Was he ill :sick02: or chesty? :-X
-
At the end of the week I expect to be out of broadband range ::) so enjoy your weekend, what ever you choose to do ...... :tulips2: :tulips:
-
where you off to then?
We paid for our June holiday today :)
-
We're tossing around holiday ideas, unsure what we fancy this year. One option is to visit an elderly aunt in California but we don't want to stay in California the whole time. We know California and the East coast between Maine and New York very well but have never visited Washington State. Anyone been there? Any hot tips?
Thanks ladies x
-
With my Mum until Sunday :-X
-
Currently in Robin Hood's Bay and loving it x
-
Elizabethrose. Been to NY to not Washington. How about Chicago?
San Francisco is worth a trip, ever been there?
-
We went to Washington last April it's a fantastic city,so much to see and do. The cherry blossoms were out they looked stunning. The people were lovely too. It was quite a culture shock arriving there after being 5 days in New York ! I really recommend going there ::)
-
So much to see in Washington! We went spring time about 17 years ago. Boston is fab too, we did that in the summer one year, crammed a lot into a few days both places.
-
I think Elizabethrose is referring to Washington State (West Coast), rather than the City of Washington (East Coast).
I went to Seattle back in the 90's & I was well impressed. They had a fantastic fish market & I remember a lovely boat trip out of the harbour where we saw seals basking.
We then continued from there over to Canada & the Rockies. A great holiday.
Cazikins x
-
Thanks for your responses ladies.
Yep Cazikins, you're right it's Washington State I was thinking of. We've been with friends this weekend who were recommending it. Like us they know California and the North East coast and wanted to venture somewhere new on their last US visit. They loved it. Cazi did you venture outside of Seattle before moving on to Canada?
Ladies I love Boston, San Francisco and New York but I've never done Washington DC or Chicago. We have family in California so have spent a lot of time there over the years and this trip we'd fly into LAX to see our folks too. We have an elderly aunt there who has been poorly and we feel we really need to visit soon. However, we'd like to visit an area that we've never seen and Washington State has been suggested.
It's just one of a number of ideas being tossed in the pot!!
-
Loved Robin Hoods Bay last year
Back from visiting Mum
-
We chose to stay at home and I mean really at home , as travelling anywhere here ( Ireland) around Easter is not recommended . As we can travel off season as and when we like up to a point, I don't see why I need to sit in traffic jams to get somewhere when I can go next week and its much quieter. Have done a few jobs round the house, gone for nice walks and meeting up with friends and family so a lovely weekend.
Booked our summer holiday, which is end of May, to Majorica and also booked a mini break to Edinburgh in July, plus other short breaks here and there but not abroad . I love going away once a year but enjoy throwing a few things into the car and jus heading off to a good hotel closer to home.
-
So do I Evelyn. A couple of hours' drive is far enough, it's different scenery and air. Can't get enthused yet though Edinburgh is on our list ::)
-
We've just booked a long weekend in Shrewsbury at the end of August. One of my post op treats xxx :)
-
I had intended visiting Shrewsbury in Jan/Feb. but Mum fell at the end of December ::). Where you going to stay?
-
We are off to the north of northumberland in June :)
-
We LOVE Northumberland !
-
I think it's called The Prince Rupert CLKD. It's right in the centre so I get a good chance to browse around all of those wonderful Tudor buildings
-
Thanks, I'll have a look-see - off-road car parking is essential for us with en-suite and if possible, a balcony :D
-
From the browsing we've done there are plenty of hotels fitting that description :)
-
We would like to do a " cathedral crawl " :) Husband loves Cathedrals and most of them are set in lovely cities so we could combine his culture with my love of retail ! Shrewsbury sounds like one to put on the list !
-
Evelyn it's a beautiful cathedral. Surrounding by really beautiful Tudor buildings. None of them are straight, they're all lopsided. Plenty of beautiful countryside to explore too :)
-
I didn't realise there is a Cathedral. We were in Ely on Sat.. We have been to loads, although not religious I find the concept fascinating!
-
Going to Lanzarote tomorrow cann't wait for some🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞
Just got to do some packing first !
Lanzalover x
-
Get that case from the attic Girl ;D then enjoy!
-
We just got our documentation and on line check in, four weeks exactly and we will be in Majorca. Have had a few stressful episodes recently and was almost considering cancelling but we would loose all our money, so will try and relax and enjoy my week away.
-
Shrewsbury on my to do list- we have bought a secondhand campervan - so far been to Scotland and Derbyshire. I like the freedom of just getting up and going and am happier with my stoma in my own bed/toilet overnight- it has a toilet and shower!
-
Oh do send me details of the design via PM ;) - we have a Portapotty in mine but it needs a walk to the facilities i.e. shower. I would like a small Hymer with shower ........ but it won't fit in our garage >:(
-
It's a very old auto sleeper ford conversion - in its day top of range - bit slow but suits us as we mostly pootle on country lanes - looked at VW but too expensive for us and small - then this appeared online at local garage - only two previous owners who had hardly used it so seemed like fate - it reminds me of my childhood in caravans - friend has Hymer but they are big and they are struggling to get insurance for going abroad now both in seventies
-
Tell them to try Saga or the Caravan/Camping Clubs!
Cathedral Cities: Ely [Cambs], Wells [Somerset], Lincoln, Bristol oh new thread I think !
-
Home after a 4 night cruise to Zeebrugge and Amsterdam. We sailed from Southampton on Wednesday and docked early Thursday morning, we got the train into Bruges (it's one of my favourite places to visit), luckily we avoided the showers by having a hot chocolate ;D
Friday morning we arrived in Amsterdam where we had booked a P & O tour to Keukenhof gardens. We have visited the gardens before, but they were just as beautiful this time. The ship stayed in port overnight and sailed Saturday lunch time.
After a day cruising back to Southampton we arrived Sunday morning, it was a short cruise, but we really enjoyed it :)
-
Lots of washing to do now you're home Two hoots?
-
Lots of washing to do now you're home Two hoots?
It's not the washing I hate it's the ironing :( but it's worth it for the lovely time we had :)
-
So don't iron ? :-\ - haven't used mine for years !
-
So don't iron ? :-\ - haven't used mine for years !
I do the basics only, shirts, trousers and tee shirts but my mother in law irons almost everything including sheets and duvet covers, which I fold and hope for the best when putting them on the bed ;D
-
Once the light is off and I'm asleep I wouldn't know if sheets etc. had been ironed ;)
-
I am the same. If it doesn't show or is not seen by anyone else it doesn't get ironed. I have cultivated a clean and creased look. Hubby does his own ironing as I cannot handle the weight of it and the movement back and forth ::) Mum used to iron bedding, tea towels, pants and socks, hankies, but I think that generation were more houseproud altogether.
-
Southern Ireland for us this year. Not cities - countryside B&B's, folk-music pubs, meeting people etc. Aaah! :)
-
I think that we would like Ireland .........
-
Sounds lovely dulciana - whereabouts? I have been two or three times but not for many years - Dingle Peninsula is lovely as is the W coast of Galway :)
Hurdity x
-
My son is on holiday in Ireland this week.
He flew in this morning and has visited the Giants Causeway and went across the longest rope bridge. He sent me a few photos. I don't like heights but the views are tremendous.
He is going into Southern Ireland tomorrow. A bit of a road trip I think with a pint of Guiness at the end of the day.
Mrs Brown.

Those are on our list, Hurdity.
Dulciana
-
I'm from Ireland and I know you will have a wonderful holiday. West Cork is hard to beat as is Galway.
-
Several trips up to Northumberland planned for over the summer
-
Did DS enjoy Ireland Mrs Brown? I think that we would as well as the Isle of Man but it means leaving the mainland :-\
LOVE Northumberland. Our calendar is soooo busy with days out, dental appts., garage appts., that we haven't 3 days to run together in order to go anywhere ::)
-
Why garage appointments CLKD is there something wrong with the new car ?
Yes he loved Ireland, he has been lots of times before but always on business trips. They did loads of different tourist stuff and we all got daft gifts.
We are off up north in a few weeks time. I'm really looking forward to this week as my holiday cottage looks great and I love the area. Not sure what we will do in the Autumn, haven't decided quite yet.
Days out are great CLKD.....enjoy.
Mrs Brown
-
Northumberland in 4 weeks time for us :) Its where my husband's family came from.
-
Hexham; Hadrian's Wall; Bamburgh, Warworth, Anlwick Castels; NT properties; Craster for crabs and the walk to Dunstenburgh Castle/back. I could go on ;D
Camper needed MOT recently, also needs a habitation check soon but getting it done locally this year rather than Yorkshire; new car OK so far ;-).
Will be visiting Mum for a few days but she doesn't know yet. Leamington Spa and Warwick soon for a day and I want to go to the Arboretum and the Richard III exhibition.
-
Why not overnight stays. Has it become too stressful for you.
I just hope my weather is good which is by no means certain in Scotland ::)
Mrs Brown
-
No time, we have to fit days-out with other appt.s - plus the various Pro-cycling on TV and the 'local' Pro-cycling events due to take part and the fact that it's too cold to wander from 'van to shower block and back :D in rain/hail/snow/gales ......... ;)
-
.... and yes, I prefer my own bath and bed ;)
-
Ahhhh, now we have the reason ;D
Camper van is great for days out but there is nothing like your bubble bath and own bed.
Couldn't agree more.
Mrs Brown.
-
Pretty quiet for us in May but a trip to Gardener World Live/Good Food show in the NEC Birmingham and a week in Brittany in June.
We will try and get a 7 night cruise in September or October but waiting to get last minute offer ;D
-
Hexham; Hadrian's Wall; Bamburgh, Warworth, Anlwick Castels; NT properties; Craster for crabs and the walk to Dunstenburgh Castle/back. I could go on ;D
Can recommend a trip to Vindolanda while your in the Hadrians Wall area, the excavation season is now underway again, its amazing what they've been finding. Other half and I first visited it when we were on honeymoon, nearly 20 years ago now. Love going back to see what else has been discovered, couple of seasons back they'd discovered a roman loo seat. The letters are just incredible and I believe they keep finding more.

Is there a new exhibit there too dolphin? With real Roman soldiers and more tales to tell. Love it up there but the growing season is so short so didn't buy ::)
-
I've just been to the Champagne region in France: Reims, Epernay and Trois. It's a really lovely area, beautiful countryside, very rustic, totally unspoilt and the people were so friendly and welcoming.
-
It was, we did the Champagne trail, basically you just stop off at the Champagne houses (typically small family run businesses) knock at the door and they invite you in to sample their Champagne. We bought quite a bit but it's all very reasonably priced as it's not taxed to high heaven. Love Cornwall the, enjoy x
-
Sounds fantastic Peri, enjoy Cornwall Huridty, have never been but its on our to do list ! We are off next week to Spain, starting to look forward to it now, we go to a small hotel that we have used for quite a few years and its like home from home .
-
Cornwall is too far for me, have to be within 5 hours of home these days :-\. Enjoy Girls!

Yup theres new exhibits and various re-enactment events on over the coming few months, if you google English Heritage you should find some info on where some of them are.
-
:thankyou: dolphin!
Had a day-out in Leamington Spa and Warwick in warm sunshine :)
-
It's what you feel comfortable with CLKD and if five hours is your limit then that's just fine.
At least when you travel you are taking your lounge and kitchen with you. Kettle on and no flasks ::)
Mrs Brown.

Whereabouts in Spain Evelyn63 - we like to go for holidays there but haven't been to the same place twice!
CLKD _ you must be a long way north if Cornwall is more than 5 hours from you - and why 5 hours rather than 6 or 7? Going to the loo block is half the fun ::) - and we don't even have a heater in ours! Sounds like you had a good day out anyway...
Hurdity x
It's actually Majorca Huridty, A little village in the North , five miles from Peurto Pollensa. Very quiet but perfect for us x

I am off on an easy walking holiday in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania on Sunday. Mostly walking in national parks but also a visit to Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius.
By the way has anyone taken prescription Estriol (or any other prescription cream) in hand luggage? i only started using it a few months ago so haven't had to take any with me before. Was it allowed? I have read the rules but it isn't 100% clear. I'm not going to risk it being confiscated so may have to put it in the hold.
-
That sounds lovely Katejo, have a wonderful time. I would advise maybe putting it in your hold luggage just to be on the safe side. Would it be possible to decant a small amount ( 100 ml) into another container as a backup . Not sure if it would be suitable for transferring out of the original container.

I have just asked a pharmacist about this. She thinks it will be ok as it is under the permitted volume (she said 80 ml) but I'm not sure I will risk it. My other meds are tablet form so I don't have a problem.
-
Anywhere away from home is too far :'( ...... the possibility of anxiety making me head 4 home sometimes ain't worth the effort.
Enjoy katejo! Maybe carry a copy of the prescription with you too? A friend went to Bled Lake 8 years ago and it looks really pretty ....... if I did't suffer anxiety we would have no money at all ;D
-
Katejo, I would decant some into a container for cabin luggage & put rest in the hold. Also carry prescription.
-
Five hours seems to be the magic number. It takes us that to get to our hidey hole in Cornwall and to get to the centre of Paris when we drive: who would believe it? I agree with the others CLKD, whatever floats your boat. If 5 hours is your limit there are probably enough places to visit that'll keep you going for years!
We were driving up to a friends house in Old Hunstanton in a couple of weeks but now can't! Hubby was knocked off his bike on the way home from work last night and has a broken tibia right at the top by the knee. Dinner was cancelled last night, evening spent in A and E. Finally left at 2am when hubby was found a bed.
Long haul today but he managed to avoid surgery which we'd been told was definite, (thank goodness!!) and he managed to escape late this evening. Non weight bearing for at least 6 weeks with more scans in 2 to check that surgery is definitely not needed.
Dear God, if tonight is anything to go by, it's going to be the longest six weeks of my life. ER can you ......... and then............ ER can you.......Peel me a grape darling.......... Oh my giddy aunt!!
Joking aside he is in absolute agony and he is probably the most stoic individual I've ever met! This is a man who does not stop for a single second, it's going to drive him completely crazy!
-
Oh no ER your poor hubby (and you as carer) I hope he'll be ok and the leg heals well xxx
-
Your poor hubby ER! Hope it heals satisfactorily.
In case you run out. ;)
🍇🍇🍇🍇🍇
-
Oh your poor hubby.
I bet you got a terrible fright.
Yep the next few weeks will be a challenge for both of you.
Get him a colouring in book to keep him occupied ::)
Hope he us in less pain this morning.
Take care
Mrs Brown
-
get well soon Mr ER, try to be a patient patient.
-
I'm so sorry to hear about your husband Elizabethrose. Wishing him a speedy recovery. Lots of love to you both xxx
-
Oh Elizabethrose, have just seen your post. How horrible for you both. Do hope he heals quickly. Hubby was knocked off his bike a few years back, but luckily for us, no serious injury for him. He was more concerned with the state of his bike - a write off!
-
So sorry to hear about your hubby Elizabethrose. I hope he will soon be feeling much better and I hope you don't get too exhausted looking after him!
-
:o - tell him from me, that is *not* the way to avoid a visit to Old Hunstanton :-X ;)
I understand why more and more cyclists are wearing head-cams, not a lot of good when hit from behind. Fortunately it's a tibia fracture ER and he hasn't ended up like poor Nicky Hayden :'( ......... there's plenty to keep him busy on TV - Homes Under the Hammer, Bargain Hunt, Escape to the Country, Tipping Point ........ :whist: as well as Sport on BT via the computer ;-).
-
Oh what lovely ladies you all are!! Thank you thank you for your kind wishes and lots of PMs!!
Well he has decided to remain in bed today as it is an extraordinary effort and also very painful to try to get around, though loo visits have been necessary. The leg is strapped into a contraption that keeps bones and joints secure but has been tensioned to allow some flexibility to the knee joint. However, his leg is like a dead weight at a weird angle, so trying to lift himself up or down is immensely tricky. My dodgy back is having a testing time!!
I think once the swelling and pain calm all will be easier, though knowing him, the more it eases the more he'll expect he can do what he usually does. He broke a leg mid tibia a few years ago skiing, then re-broke the same leg climbing a ladder two weeks later. What the heck do you do with someone like that?!
He was hit side on by a chap in an open top van pulling out of a side road. Rain, dusk, he just didn't see him. The chap was utterly horrified and apologetic, managed to get hubby into cab and bike on the back and brought him home though he wanted to take him to A and E. As usual hubby was downplaying it, 'stop fussing woman' when he arrived home. I knew it was broken and insisted we do the A and E run. The knee was the size of a small football, it says it all really!
The staff in A and E were relaying horrific stories of cycle injuries on the city streets. I am really rather hoping I will be able to persuade him to give it up and use his legs and public transport and save his bikes for parks and the countryside. The talk of surgery and definite arthritis in later years quite surprised him. No matter how proficient and careful a cyclist you are, you are completely unprotected if a motorist isn't.
Thank you all again for your good wishes xxx
-
Maybe check on your Household Policy that he is insured ?!?
-
ER be careful of you too. Men do tend to play these things down, must be the macho side in them. I used to be terrified every time my hubby was out on his motor bike/bike. Always saying He was careful. But it was the careless folk driving past him which I was worried about.
-
When you off Hurdity?
-
That would be telling ::)
Hurdity x
-
I know exactly what you mean cubagirl. I'm not one of life's worriers but city cycling is such a risky business that I worry that every journey will result in a phone call, if you know what I mean. Motorbikes scare the heck out of me so you have my sympathies there too.
I'm trying to lift 'well' but the pesky back is aggravated by anything nowadays x
-
Not just city cycling, Elizabethrose - my other half uses mostly back roads for his long commute & drivers on these routes often speed past far too fast & far too close. I don't think they realise a cyclist may be pushed into their path by a pothole, a gust of wind or that their slipstream can be dangerously destabilising. I think we could do with some public information films like we had years ago to help educate drivers who may not realise how vulnerable cyclists are. I wait for the call that he's got to work safe every time he goes - he loves cycling (in all weathers) & nothing will persuade him to exchange it for a drive in situations where the bike can be used.
-
Wrensong, it's such a worry isn't it? Has he ever come off? I think hubby is pretty shocked by how he feels. He's never ill and even when he broke his leg skiing it didn't really stop him. Think tube escalators on crutches!! (Thus re-breaking it climbing on a ladder!) >:( However, he is completely unable to move without extraordinary effort and assistance. Just washed him which was no easy exercise. Poor man, I feel very sorry for him. Despite having a slave woman pandering to his every need, the pain is palpable. x
-
My sympathies to you both. I can remember back to when our eldest son had a spiral fracture to tib and fib, it was a long road to recovery but he is fine now thanks to an excellent surgeon.
DH was knocked off his bike soon after we were married. He also played it down but had to go to casualty the next day. He had a broken collar bone and it is still not quite right to this day :(
-
Yes Elizabethrose, OH was knocked off coming home from work by a young driver a few years ago. Luckily only cuts & bruises, though the bike was a write off and needed months of insurance correspondence. He's been a keen cyclist since childhood & has all the gear, but the issue of whether cycle helmets can do more harm than good in certain situations is hotly debated amongst the cycling community & he chooses not to wear one. I don't know what to think about that, we've often had the conversation, but it's his body & he's more knowledgeable about cycling than me, so I accept his choice & no longer get involved!
-
This week has been difficult as I offered to visit with Mum who immediately gave me a list of problems her end, which sent me into a panic so appetite waned. Took an emergency anti-anxiety tablet at 9.05 and am now at the stage of munching dried fruits and nuts with a cuppa to hand, have put off going 2 see her as planned tomorrow until Friday. Her big problem hasn't gone away and is being made bigger because she hasn't anyone else to moan to :-\ - so I may be away for a few days to keep her company.
-
I should have gone away this morning :'(
-
:bighug:
Sounds like you need it CLKD
-
CLKD explained at the end of the previous page :).
Sending you a cyber hug CLKD and hope you feel better and get to visit with your mum soon x
-
We are off to the Ashdown Forest again in September as we can't afford to go abroad this year :'( :'( - well not unless I can find a job soon....
-
Better thanks now we are home. I couldn't eat due to crippling anxiety at the start of last week which caused severe depression - we managed a few days away to sort Mum's problems and I was OK >phew<
Lots of places to go but no time ::) - what's wrong with UK Holidays Cazikins?
-
Off on our hols in 2 weeks :)
-
Off to IOW in 2 weeks
-
I'm off on the 10th.
Going to have to leave my sister to her own devices after her accident though.
That's not happy making
Mrs Brown
-
- what's wrong with UK Holidays Cazikins?
Nothing CLKD, I love the UK but I also like going abroad to experience foreign food, mixing with the people, & experiencing their way of life. The wildlife, fauna, flowers, shops, weather. Trying out a different language & getting use to the foreign money - it's just being somewhere totally different.
-
Not in mainland Europe then if you're using 'foreign' money :D. I would love to be able to do what they do on Star Trek, push a button and be there!
-
Apparently Croatia is beautiful and uses 'foreign' money, the Kuna :)
-
Croatia is beautiful. Went for a week to Dubrovnik a few years back. Fancy trying another area in Croatia sometime. Split is supposed to be lovely.
-
I have an online cyberfriend in Split, her photos are stunning. DS is off to a wedding in Dubrovnik this summer :)
-
I can thoroughly recommend the Istrian Coast cubagirl.
It is in the north of the country. This is the medeival town of Porec,
(https://s3.postimg.org/m8n5d6ajz/048.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/m8n5d6ajz/)
And this is the beautiful Rovinj
(https://s13.postimg.org/lhrlzeo8j/2014-09-14_10.52.46.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/lhrlzeo8j/)
& many more places around there - it is truly beautiful. You usually fly to Pula airport & it's about an hour transfer. You can also catch the hydrofoil from Porec to Venice which makes a great day out.
Oh & I've just found this picture of me & hubby white water rafting in Brela (further south) in 2003:

Love Cazikins x
-
Are you the one with their eyes shut Cazikins ;D
Lovely photos....thank you.
Mrs Brown
-
Wonder if Hurdity will tell us where she 'went' for a few days, apparently ........ 'now that would be telling' ain't really an addition to this thread!
-

Maybe she thinks if she says when she is away someone will go rob her house.
Only thing...no one knows where it is ;D ;D
Mrs Brown
-
I didn't think that her response further above was appropriate ........... well, no doubt some know :-\
-
Sorry CLKD.
I must have missed that post and didn't realise you thought that.
No offence meant at all :-\
Mrs Brown
-
???
-
I asked "When are you off, Hurdity" and the response was "that would be telling" - well it's a holiday thread :beat:
No offence taken Mrs B! But it seemed strange to me for a Member to say that she was away to a holiday but ......... :-X
We still haven't booked anywhere - too many days out to enjoy ::)
-
Just booked flights to LA with a return from Seattle in October. That's one heck of a drive! You can rob me when I'm away ladies as long as you take my ironing pile with you! ;)
Going to spend a few days with family in Southern California, sprint up to San Francisco as we've done that stretch many times. Then wind our way up through Northern California taking in the wine country, through Oregon, coast road but then heading inland, and then into Washington State.
We'll need a holiday when we get back!!
-
We drove from Vegas up to San Francisco. Stayed overnight halfway. Rained all the way on the 2nd Leg.
-
We did it the other way around (last year) and drove from San Fran to Vegas. We stopped off at Carmel, Death Valley and the Grand canyon, as well as ending up at Yosemite. Hell of a road trip
-
I hear an RV trip coming on ;D
-
We did a trip to Southern California at Easter time when the kids were small. It's usually lovely then but they were experiencing the worst weather in memory! We had to buy warm clothing when there and had cold soggy days at Knottsberry Farm, and Universal Studios. The kids swam in the heated pools in the rain which they thought was great fun especially when 'pool room service' was brought by staff under umbrellas.
Nah, hotel stops when it takes our fancy CLKD x
-
Swimming in the rain is something else, I love it!
-
We did Vancouver to Vegas one year, but most of Route 1 by night :-X
-
Whoa, now that's a trip and a half! Were you driving? x
-
Whoa, now that's a trip and a half! Were you driving? x
Yes ;D
We did it in a mustang convertible in about 10 days and visited Victoria, Vancouver, Seattle, various places in Oregon, San Francisco, Death Valley and Vegas.
-
Oh! I would love a Mustang - there are a lot around our area t the moment, I think that Ford have issued a 'special' for an anniversary :-\ .....
-
Whoa, now that's a trip and a half! Were you driving? x
Yes ;D

Whoa get you in your Mustang, and convertible as well. I bet you had a brilliant time. We've had some wonderful trips in the States though have to say I always boringly insist upon a fixed roof as I'm usually cowering from the sun. Hubby's done some rallies over there, loves cars with a passion. x
-
Going to Sicily (Taormina) in the morning, can't wait, ciao x
-
ENJOY!
-
Byeeeeeee for now, off on hoilday to Northumberland :)
-
Bonne journée! Have a wonderful time x

Well. We were going to go to driving round the west coast of Ireland for ten days - or so we thought. We set off good and early a.m. on Monday and by 8am we'd driven 50 miles from Edinburgh. We were going for the midday ferry from Stranraer and were doing really well. Then the fun started. I became aware of a sort-of sloshing sound which I first of all thought was rain, but it wasn't raining. Then the dashboard came up with the notice "Engine too hot. Stop now." We stopped, opened up the bonnet to help things cool down and then saw that water was dripping out underneath. Looked like radiator trouble. Oh dear. We called for help and were told by the Green Flag man that he couldn't fix it and that it would need to be taken to a garage. So he called the vehicle recovery service and we were taken back to Edinburgh, with the car on the back. The garage told us it would need a new radiator. So that was it. Irish holiday up the spout, as car hire round Ireland was way above our price limits. We've just had four very pleasant days in Dunkeld (Perthshire), instead, courtesy of a much-shorter-distance car hire. Maybe Irish holiday next year - flying to Ireland and hiring a car when we're there! ::)
-
Reminds me of a holiday about 20 years ago, we hired a cottage in Suffolk for a week, loaded up husbands car with the luggage and all the things a two year old takes. After about 30 miles the car gave up and we broke down on the m4. We were taken to the local garage and left his car there but I had a car a Citroen ax, so we loaded almost everything into it and set off again. We were lucky there were no ferry crossing included but it's a long drive from west wales to Suffolk in a tiny car.
I loved that little car and kept it for 14 years, it never let me down :)
Better luck next time getting to Ireland :)
-
Yes, Hasty, it was, thank you. We enjoyed beautiful scenery, a comfortable, friendly hotel and lots of good food. We've also come back with a whole host of kitchen bits and pieces bought from a kitchen "Alladin's cave" in Dunkeld - which is a lovely little historical little town that I would recommend anyone to visit, by the way. Meanwhile, fingers crossed for the west coast of Ireland 2018. After all the trouble Hubby went to in organising the trip, it's got to be worth it!
-
.................it was probably better it happened on mainland UK rather than on the west coast of Ireland.
...............And yes!
-
That's a shame Dulciana. At least you enjoyed Dunkeld instead.

We did, cubagirl. It's a lovely place. Do you know it?
-
Passed through it on the train, never stopped off. Surrounding area is so picturesque.
-
Despite the reasons why we ended up there, would recommend. Great place for a weekend break. :)
-
Watching 'The Loch at the moment. The scenery is stunning.
-
Sounds interesting!
-
The important thing was to have a Plan B and to be able to enjoy the un-expected visit to Perthshire - which is on our List ;D
-
What's a holiday?
-
It can be a vacation or a staycation.
I take it you can't get away.
Try and have a holiday at home. A few days out....a picnic in the garden. A day of chilling and watching DVDs...a takeaway or a meal out.
You don't have to go away to get a break..
-
I could sell the UK as a holiday destination: days out or short breaks ;-)
-
Perthshire is gorgeous as it the whole of the Trossachs. We stayed in Callender (where Dr Finlay's Casebook was filmed) and saw so many different lochs and scenery and lovely little places :)
-
BJ it is stunning, there & Loch Ness.
-
Less .......... another place that I can't remember the name of, I could take you to it .......... ::) - think it starts with a 'P'
Northumberland
The Cotswolds
Most of Wales
Norfolk Coast for bird watching
Suffolk

With the palm trees 🌴
I'm just back from Jersey, loved it. Loads of ww2 history, even went into a German bunker which was amazing. Beautiful unspoiled beaches too, will definitely be back.
-
Yep. Palm trees. Quiet. Plockton is 'owned' so inside or out, those living in Estate properties have to get approval if they want to decorate or make alterations, hence it remains in the 1960s ......... I went when I was 11 and took Himself there 11 years ago to share and it hadn't altered a bit.
My Mum went on a plane trip when she was 81 - had to get a Passport and everything ::) - to Jersey :o [long story short]
-
Nearly50 we go there in 7 weeks time. :) Can't wait. The underground museum is one of the best we've ever been to. Everything in chronological order. I often pass stuff in museums, hubby & I read everything in there. We didn't do Nigel Mansell's car museum. Do you know if it's worthwhile?
-
It looked a good idea cubagirl on his interview for F1 earlier today ....... for those who like motor racing or on a wet day?
-
Didn't watch F1. Says online that most spend about 2 hours there, so maybe worth a look.
-

Me too, read every word. It was a German bunker near the Corbiere lighthouse which was a highlight though, even went up and down vertical ladders to see part of it. I'm terrified of ladders so this was a big achievement ;) Loved watching the surfers at St Oeuen's Bay, felt like Queensland. And the walkway out to the lighthouse is great at low tide.
Didn't go to the Mansell Collection, did go to an animal cemetery nearby though which was weird! I spent most of my time doing coastal walks really, it was so lovely to be out and about in blue skies.
Hope you have a lovely time :)
-
I love cemeteries - a village history is all there!
-

I'd never been to an animal one before, most of the animals were from the 1930s. I suppose the occupation and so many people having to kill their pets before evacuating put paid to its use for a while :(
-
I read about the sadness about having to part with some pets.
-
I read about the sadness about having to part with some pets.
there was an interview with a man talking about the evacuation and how when they turned up at the pier and saw the coal boat they were to go in, and changed their mind about going. Went home but by this time the pets had been killed, you could still hear the wee boy in him when he told the story.
-
There is an animal cemetery at Edinburgh Castle.
We have 8 pets and no one to look after them. We used to get away, only had 2 cats then and Stephen's Dad saw to them. He's in his 80's now.
We do get out, picnics and the like. Stephen's photography class has a day out each term and we go along, although by car because I take one look at a minibus and turn a very fetching shade of green. I'm beginning my Royal School of Needlework's Certificate course in September in Bristol. Stephen can enjoy a day wandering around Bristol Temple Meads Station - he loves trains - whilst I enjoy my challenge of the Jacobean module.
-
Well if the weather holds out we're off camping ( somewhere in SW England ::) ) for a few days - maybe in a few days or sooner. Looks like rain though - but always good by the sea.
If we do go - well I hope things have calmed down when I come back ( weatherwise that is ;) )
Hurdity x
-
Have a great time Hurdity - it's good to have a change of scene even if it does rain! I've not been on here for a few days and can see that it's not only the weather which would benefit from a bit of calm!
Taz x
-
If anyone finds some good weather can you please send some northwards. I have summer clothes which haven't seen the light of day yet. ::)
-
Mine stayed in the cupboards last year cubagirl - at least a few weeks ago I actually put on a shift dress :o and it still fitted ;D
Apart from a quick visit to C Mum soon no over-night plans made: too much cycling on TV :D
-
Will be out of wifi range for a few days ::)
-
Just booked two weeks in Lanzarote but unfortunately not until November 😢
Lanzalover x
-
From your forum name, Lanzalover, I'm guessing you must really like the place. I've never been to Lanzarote - what's it like??
:)
-
Volcanic?
-
Lanzalover we've been in November a couple of times before our son started school, great time to go.
Dulciana Lanzarote is fab, I love it there, loads to do, lovely beaches, great food & very friendly. We stayed in Puerto del Carmen twice & Playa Blanca once. I only liked the old town/marina in Puerto del Carmen, main beach strip is full of English pubs & food not my scene, but the beach and promenade are lovely. Playa Blanca is where we will go back to sometime soon, I hope!
-
Lanzarote sounds great :)
We've just booked Kefalonia, anyone been there? 8) :sunny:
-
Sorry never been to Kefalonia but work with a girl who really rates the Greek islands she always goes in September and always has fab weather.Think she has been to all the different islands over the years.
DH and I went to Crete in May over 30 years ago for two weeks this was back in the day of package hols and you got a meal in little plastic tray on the flight needles to say DH got gravy down the front of his sweat shirt so when we arrived I washed it and put it on the balcony to dry not knowing that for the next ten days it would rain every day we watched this sweat shirt getting wetter and wetter and bigger and bigger in the end it was the size of a bath towel ! We obviously picked the wrong two weeks as neighbours went a couple of months later and they both ended up with sun stroke !
Needles to say we have never been back but we can laugh about now (it took a long time) but it's still referred to as the holiday from hell 😀
Anyway I'm sure you'll have a great time.
Lanzalover x

Hi dulciana
Yes I love Lanzarote in fact we own an apartment in Playa Blanca which was was once a little fishing village but has grown over the years but still retains a village feel in the town centre.
There are lovely little villages in the centre of the island well worth visiting and little villages on the coast with just a few fish restaurants overlooking the sea which are lovely for lunch or dinner while watching the lovely sunsets.
If you ever decide to visit let me know and I'll happily give you more info on places to visit.
Yorkshire Girl
Yes November is a lovely month to visit we have been every month except February although we don't go in July and August now as we try to avoid school holidays (sons all grown up now) and post meno I find it to hot.
We have gone in November for the last six years or so as Tias the village above Puerto del Carmen holds a mini tapa week you get a map and a list of bars and restaurants participating you go in and for €3 get to sample their entry plus a glass of wine or small beer you then get them to stamp your entry and when you have sampled them all you vote for your favourite prizes if your entry gets picked out.
The week starts on a Friday evening and they have bands playing and dancing in the town it's a really good night but the bars do get very busy that night so we usually end up going back one afternoon to try and visit the ones we didn't get to on the Friday last year there were about ten participating bars, but each year there seem to be more.If you are ever over again in November it's well worth a visit.

Thanks for that Lanzalover, will make a note!
Salad yes we've been to Kefalonia back in May 2008. Stayed in a villa in Lourdas. Lovely island, lots to explore, took ferry from Argostoli to Lixouri well worth doing. If you want any more info, just ask!☺

Took my hubbie to Iceland for his 50th...fab for long weekend...blue lagoon/geysers/waterfalls/PMT...wonderful. I got bitten on the boob by a mosquito and thought it was a breast lump doh. Did week in Vienna this year. Great for kids. Zoo aquarium. Cheap as chips Lidos where you swim in river. 34'C. Heaven. Didn't stress once the whole week. Back two weeks and Im a big fat mess again. If only life were one big warm holiday..
-
My hubby wants to go to Iceland one day it does sound lovely.
Can you see the Northern Lights from there Roseneath?
-
Lanzalover x
That sounds really lovely, Lanzalover. Thanks for describing it for me! And sorry this reply is late, but I've only just read your post.

Well described Lanzalover, makes me want to be there now!!
-
Hey Cazikins......Yes about the Northern Lights it you choose the right time and weather is clear. I loved Reykjavik. It was only 90 minutes flight from Glasgow with Iceland Air (They do great package deals with hotels). When you land the place looks like an extreme Scotland but everything is so weird, un-European....Women all 6ft blondes, Men all have beards, everyone goes out until 2am but the streets are so quiet. Great place for a 3 night break; Blue Lagoon / Island tour / Whale watching...sorted. And not nearly as expensive it eat out if you shop around...same as here...whale burger anyone (Yes really but no I didn't). Happy Days.

Hi Salad
Kefalonia is my husband's favourite place, he's been around 16 times (I've only been twice) and loves it. We stay in Lassi which is lovely and has a beautiful beach. What makes Kefalonia very special though is the people, they're really friendly and love the British. Hope you enjoy your hol x
-
Thank you Yorkshire Girl - I'm going to do a bit of reading about the island.
And that's so good to hear Peri- it must be alright if you've been more than once :D
From my research so far the only bad reviews are people saying it's a bit quiet- which is just what we are looking for :sunny:

Lanzalover x
You've made me want to go in November - tapas😋😋
-
Going to book can picafort today for end of month. Not my first choice for location ( I love Palma and soller) but youngest DD will be there for part of the time and wants us to spend some time with her - so that's that ::)
-
Great to hear about everyone's holiday plans!
If anyone finds some good weather can you please send some northwards. I have summer clothes which haven't seen the light of day yet. ::)
I did go away camping and have been away for 11 days but the weather was mostly rubbish!! So much rain and wind! Hope you managed to wear some summer clothes cubagirl - we kept hearing how the weather was better in the north but not sure if that meant Scotland or just N England! Good to get away though...
Have never been away on November except to visit offspring in England! The warmth at that time of year would be very tempting!
Hurdity x
-
Hurdity I know Scotland have had more sunny days than south west, but here in Yorkshire it's not been great, not had as many showers/rain as some parts but it's the wind that I'm getting fed up with!

It sounds lovely & I know hubby is so keen to go . I think I'm going to have to think seriously about us going there soon.
I did whale watching in Canada years ago & it brought tears to my eyes as it I got so emotional, not sure I could eat a whale burger though :o
I'll check out the package deals & see what's on offer.

I've just driven back through the Leith Docks part of Edinburgh, past lots of of holiday-makers from the cruise ship that's in dock at the moment. It's fun to think about what nationalities they are, where they've been, where the ship's going on to, etc. I'm also wondering if any of them managed to avoid the short, sharp shower that the heavy, dark sky turned into just after I reached our front door! ::) This must be about the third cruise ship that's been in dock since our failed attempt at an Irish holiday a few weeks ago - it almost makes me feel like a holiday-maker myself! It also makes me feel proud to be an Edinburger and happy to see our visitors. So, if anyone on here is from that cruise ship, welcome to Edinburgh! :)
-
If we have obviously 'foreign' visitors in our region I open up conversation by asking how many languages they speak ;)
-
That's a good ice-breaker, CLKD!
-
Usually it works ........ partly 'cos I'm nosey :D! But for me it's like having a geography lesson without leaving our shores, nor do I require a Passport ;)

whatever happened in Ireland Dulciana?? I travelled from the North to Connemara a few weeks back bit of a wash out but we had a ball😀

Well, DaisyB..................we were aiming to explore villages on the west coast of Ireland!
We set off from Edinburgh nice and early, aiming for the 1pm ferry from Stranraer. All was well until about 50 miles into the journey, when I began to hear strange sloshing noises. It wasn't raining and I was puzzled. After a while, a notice came up on the dashboard, saying, "Engine overheating. Stop now." So we stopped and Hubby called for assistance. To cut a long story short, eventually help arrived and the man informed us that our radiator had leaked all its contents on to the road and that we would have to get the car to a garage. He left and we then had to wait over two hours before the recovery vehicle turned up. (In the meantime, we had bought sandwiches from a little local cafe and were also allowed to use their staff loo when they heard what had happened to us!) Eventually, the recovery vehicle turned up and we were taken back to Edinburgh with our car on the back. We then had the car ride from hell - the driver told us he had been up late the night before and then up early that morning and he kept telling us he was shattered. He drove at around 85 mph virtually all the way back down the motorway, in the outside lane, with his hands mostly down at the bottom of the steering wheel and with his window open and the radio on, presumably to help him wake up!! Cars that had been in front of him just had to get out of his way. I was sitting in between him and Hubby. I was absolutely terrified, kept my eyes shut and prayed hard! We (somehow!) got back to Edinburgh in one piece, he got us to the garage and then he drove away. More long story short - the garage told us the car needed a new radiator, so we left the car with them, enjoyed an Italian meal out that night, hired a car the next day and managed to get four very nice days in Dunkeld, in which we r-e-l-a-x-e-d.............. :) Maybe we'll get to Ireland next year!

my goodness Dulciana that is a story and a half!! At least you got to salvage something😉 This time I stayed in Connemara that is my favourite part - rained most days but we loved it. Hopefully you'll get to see it next year!

Thanks DaisyB! :thankyou:

The last 2 weeks of September will see us having days out and not making any plans in advance. The only 3 days when we have to honour commitments are fine. Two to see DH's parents and my Mum and the 3rd is a day in Bristol.
With 8 pets, 4 each of cats and hens, we cannot go away. The cats are fussy and the hens are twice as bad! FIL used to cat sit, but he no longer drives and the hens would be one step too far for him, in case anything happened. He panicked when he first cat sat. He and MIL had been out and decided to feed Thomas, who was our only cat (at that time) his tea before going home. MIL stayed in car. Apparently he came out in a terrible state saying " I've lost her cat. Thomas isn't here". MIL said that he must be indoors. In both went. Hunted everywhere. MIL asked what the duvet was turned over for. FIL, no idea, maybe we'd left it that way. MIL pokes duvet. Duvet MEOWED LOUDLY! Thomas found. FIL mightily relieved :)
-
I bet he was, Brighteyes! There's nothing quite like cats..........!

Booked 10days holiday to Menorca 1st October ! 🌞🌞 hopefully ! 😁

Packed yet ;D ?

Hopefully will drop son at university early September (assuming passes exams) and hope you continue on a tour and actually meet another menopause matters member 🙂

Mind if I have a moan first, then pick people's brains?
Various close family members are/have been on holiday to xyz destinations this year, having a lovely time all round. We, on the other hand, didn't get to where we had planned to go because of the car breaking down, totally scuppering our plans, time-and-money-wise. I really needed that holiday and although we were able to hire a car and at least get out of town, it wasn't enough and I now feel thwarted and fed up.
Hubby's been asking me where I would like to go next year, if we can manage something. Through this emotional fug, however, I simply can't think where this would be - although cities, culture, scenery etc. would probably feature, as long as the cost wasn't prohibitive. (The only thing that doesn't attract me at all is the "sun-sea-and-sand" type of holiday.)
I was wondering if anybody here could recommend anywhere they've been? I'm not trying to be nosey - I'm just looking for some encouragement and the chance to dream/plan etc.....Thanks, ladies! :foryou:
-
Dulciana, have you considered the Scottish Highlands? Just remember that May is the midge season.

Thanks Brighteyes - in fact, living in Scotland, we've been to the Highlands more times than we've had hot dinners. I agree, though, they're pretty unbeatable and I can smell the peat and smoke houses now! Hoping to get to the West of Ireland a few weeks ago, we were looking for something similar in a place we hadn't been to before - and it may not even have a midge problem! ::)
-
Check out Riviera Travel. We usually go with them. They do everything from short breaks to long tours. Can be pricey sometimes but no hidden extras. Have never had a bad holiday with them.
Thanks Breeze. Will take a look.
Just took a look. Wow. Dream time!
-
I do enjoy a cruise, once I have a unpacked I can look forward to good food the occasional cocktail ;D
I find it very relaxing and enjoy the visiting a new port every day. The ships are like grand hotels not at all like ferries ;D
Some of my favourite land based holiday destinations are Bruges, Normandy and Brittany and in the uk I love the Cotswolds. Being welsh of course anywhere in Wales, where the sun always shines ::)
I don't like flying so I can't recommend anywhere that involves a flight.
Next year I've been looking at the possibility of driving to the south of France and then getting the ferry to Corsica, we had a day in Ajaccio on a cruise a few years ago and loved the small part of the island we saw so I'm doing my research into next years holiday as well :)
-
Dulciana if you like the highlands why not look into touring Snowdonia,of course I'm biased ! ::)
The scenery is stunning and plenty to do,castles galore, slate mines, museums, mountains and beaches all in a smallish area. :)
-
Dulciana the area around Cork in Ireland is beautiful & there s lots to do. As Dazned mentioned Snowdonia & North Wales is also wonderful getaway. Cyprus has your criteria especially up in he Troodos mountains and all the painted churches, there are lots of archeological sites to visit, also good value out of main holiday season. If I think of any others will let you know x

OK - how far do you want to travel? B&B/Hotels?
Down as far as Hexham - Hadrian's Wall, Hexham Gaol, stunning scenery - of course, there's the history of the Revevers (sp) too
Durham - a City I could live in as it's pretty, walkable and has easy access to countryside
Alnwick - Castle, Gardens, Town and surrounding area
Rothbury - has a NT house close by, of course, name escapes me ::)
Further down: York and Ripon; Wells, Cheddar Gorge Caves, Bath; Coventry, Stratford on Avon [antique shops, butterfly park] Leamington Spa, Warwick ........
Norfolk - full of history and querky towns etc., Norwich, Gt Yarmouth, Cromer, Sheringham then inland to the Shell Museum
South Coast: Dover, Leeds Castle, Brighton, Hove ......... pays your monies, takes your choice ;-). - Most towns have on-line tourist information for accommodation and a 'what to do' section
-
Thanks CLKD!

We did Northumberland this year, have done Dorset many a time and the Isle of Wight (but could be further than you want to go? It's like going abroad without going abroad and the climate is very mild :)

Babyjane we did a week in Northumberland this month, we stayed in Seahouses this time, 8 years ago we stayed outside Alnwick. Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!
-
Dulciana, I had no idea you live in Scotland, it might be a bit of a busman's holiday wouldn't it! I have strong ties to the Highlands, an ancestor is remembered at Glenfinnan. We are MacBean's. When DH and I visited Glen Coe my deep love of history brought the events there to life in my head. It was as if I could shut my eyes, calm my mind and I could 'hear' the slaughter. DH did give me a sideways look, but my Mum knew exactly what I meant when I told her. That confused DH even further ::)
Have you decided anywhere you might like to holiday in next year?
Brighteyes

Goodness me yes, loved it (hubby knows it well as his grandparents were from Newcastle). In 2003 we stayed in Beadnell near Seahouses and this time in Rothbury, near Alnwick ;D. Plan to go back the year after next and stay further down near Hadrian's Wall and Vindolanda.
-
I SO need a holiday so does hubby, we are on our knees to be truthful but can't do anything until we have my Mum better and settled.
-
would a long weekend or short break in this country help in the interim, where you could get back to mum if need be but enough to relax the two of you. Somewhere like a hotel and spa perhaps to be cooked for and looked after?
-
Or somewhere near to where you Mum is right now PF? A couple of nights 'on hand' as it were?
-
We have a week off work coming up in a couple of weeks, and as we've spent a fortune on having the kitchen and bathroom re-fitted this year, we were going to have the week at our caravan ... but DH decided last week that we should go away somewhere we both love as it's our 10th wedding anniversary (we've been together 22 years, but only married 10). So we are off to Disneyland Paris!!! I'm so excited - we've been several times before and for us it never loses the magic. We've treated ourselves to the Disneyland Hotel (the resort's top-rated hotel, positioned right over the entrance to the park) as it's a special occasion. I'm like a small child now, counting the days until we go ;D

Sounds just what you need Scampi!

Hi Brighteyes. Yes, I've lived in Scotland for most of my life, apart from some years in S. England and I'm only partly Scottish but that's another story! Glen Coe's an amazing place, I agree, very thought-provoking and atmospheric. I remember driving through it a long time ago, at dusk on a very rainy night in August with thick clouds creeping down the hilltops - slightly too atmospheric for my liking, that night!
Hubby and I have mulled over next year and we're beginning to think in the direction of either trying again to get to Ireland or exploring the website that Breeze mentioned (Riviera Travel).
I really appreciate the suggestions that everyone has given me here. I'm sure we should be able to come up with something for next year :thankyou:. Thanks folks! Dulciana

Sounds wonderful Scampi X
We have been to Scotland a couple of times once to Dundonnell & then a few years later to Fort William. We are looking into staying again but struggling to decide where!! At least Scotland is alot nearer now!

Just got back from visiting Harry Potter Studio Tour . It was AMAZING! Then had a day at Chessington which was deserted and LegoLand Windsor which was full of Scottish as the english schools were not off. Not my idea of how to spend my 48th birthday but we found some great restaurants in Gerrards Cross near the hotel. Went to Rohl Dahls house in Great Missenden...what a life he had...quite inspirational...had lost of family tradgedies but acheived so much in his life and never gave up anything he put his mind to. Back home now to our B & B. Boooooo Still for sale..nearly two years now!
-
Thanks for the up-date! Weather was OK-ish? Did you discuss how you plan to move forwards with regards what time your Guests will be arriving, I discussed this with DH and he says that a) we never look at 'advice' sites, b) I always look at the web-site particularly at the bathrooms and c) - this is your home first! Put Foot Down with Firm Hand?
We haven't been away yet other than to see Mum :-\

That will be one very very very long flight CLKD

Had a lovely weekend in Llandudno last weekend there was sixteen of us in total all family so it was good to catch up with the ones we don't see that often. The weather was dry but rather windy.
