Title: Don't mess with my man!
Post by: cubagirl on October 25, 2016, 03:51:03 PM
Hubby received a phone call today, not the first, from National Accident helpline, about an accident he's never had! He told them for the umpteenth time to stop phoning. The person at the other end called him a downright liar! Well that was it. Hubby exploded, demanding to speak to a supervisor. They  continued to say he was lying. They were looking for someone with a different name who supposedly had given them our number.  Of course it came through as a withheld number, so we can't block it. I've told him to complain, but he fears they will plague us more. As a rule we don't answer withheld numbers, but he'd just come off the phone to internet supplier & thought they were returning our call.

Thankfully he has calmed down.    ::)

same here!  Someone drove straight across a X roads and smashed into son's car. It was a right off and he got a broken arm and lots of bruising.

This was about 10 years ago and within days he was getting called and they carried on for year sadly.

Tell them to send you a letter from their Solicitor with the date, place, time of accident as well as witnesses.

I also quote 'telephone preference service' which should stop them!

Trading Standards may well be compiling a list too.

Nuisance calls are very annoying and intrusive. My old mobile phone was bombarded with them. As only a few people knew my number, it was easy to not answer unknown numbers. I also got texted by Hermes, a courier firm, about some parcel left in the north of England several times a day. After complaining by email, the texts stopped for a couple of weeks, then restarted. I bought my new phone sooner than intended and did not keep my old number. Those texts are now going into Internet ether!

We were cold called by Anglian windows regularly. I tended to be rude saying if we needed new windows they would be the last company we would consider. I think my DHs answer was better. He inquired whether they could double glaze his car!

;D ……… 'telephone preference service' if I remember is my first response.

I've had two of these this week. Found this online though https://www.national-accident-helpline.co.uk/policy-against-cold-calling

Anything home improvement related tell them you don't own the house, you rent it so it's down to the landlord!

Or tell them you've got everything. I do and we have!

TPS only works if you have a number, same with call blocking on our phone.

We did read that thanks Taz. Hubby says if they do it again he's going to leave the phone off the hook until they get bored. Not sure that'll work, but who knows. My son has been getting calls too. Neither have had an accident.

Is this actually a legitimate organisation? I'm in Australia and I've had similar calls and they are scams.

Don't even bother trying to argue with them. Just hang up straight away. The more you respond to them the less likely they will be to leave you alone.

They haven't confused you with anyone else, and no one has given them your number. They are scammers who are probably after credit card or bank account details.

Get a phone that filters the calls. We've not had a nuisance call since we bought it 18 months ago. Best thing we ever bought.

The National Accident Helpline is a legitimate organisation but what they say on their website is that other companies cold call pretending to be them. The real NAH never cold call

Telephone Preference Service needs the land-line number.  All Companies planning on cold calling have to check each number …. of course it's easier and cheaper for them not to do so!  It can be problematic for those who buy phone lists from Companies if TPS numbers are left on those lists!

This is of course something that BT could stop.  But it would probably cost 'too much'.  Even devices that should 'block' numbers don't always work.  I get them on the my mobile too  >:(

We signed up for TPS and it was absolutely useless. When I mentioned it to cold callers, I could tell most of them could not have given a damn. My husband who had retired was becoming demented so we eventually got BT call guardian and so far not 1 call has come through. Has some disadvantages eg when I was working because calls went through a switchboard so had to go through a short caller ID. Flutterbyx

Managed to trace. Hubby said there was no number, but there was, so now blocked on our phone.

"Battersea Dogs Home, may I help you?"

"Property belongs to the Council"

for the calls regarding 'windows' - "I don't own a computer"  ;D

Think my hubby may say something a little more crass if it happens again!  ;D

He battled with Sky today over our internet connection. He has a short fuse at the moment, something I've hardly ever seen or heard in all the years I've known him. In fact I said I was preparing to duck in case any expletives came my way!  ;D ;D ;D I'm hoping it's just because he's under the weather at the moment.  ::)

I have been bombarded with these calls following an accident in the summer where someone drove into the back of our car...so not our fault.
Have had what seems hundreds of them and my daughter now seems to be getting them. She firmly told the last caller that it was still not legal for her to drive for another 4 years!

As an aside - Himself had a letter regarding PPI this morning, obviously his 'F-off' comment recently didn't get through  ;D.  I've sent it back in their self-addressed envelope ………

I heard one that made me chuckle recently.

Caller: Good evening sir,  our records show that you were involved in an accident recently.  Is that correct?
Irritated houseowner "Well yes I was,  rather a serious one.  I was decapitated"
Caller: a long pause before hanging up

A colleague at work had one of those 'we are calling about your recent accident' calls - you know, the ones that don't start by asking if you've had an accident, but rather state that you have.

He's really good at keeping a straight face, and made them believe he actually believed he'd had an accident he couldn't remember!  He had them believing he was going to see his doctor as he must have had a serious head injury - they ended up back-peddling like fury and trying to convince him he hadn't had an accident!  He kept up the game for quite some time before snapping out of 'panicked person' mode and asking them if he's wasted enough of their time before putting the phone down.  We were in stitches!!  ;D

Scampi my hubby does the same and is on the phone for ages, it drives me nuts as whilst the calls are annoying I always think there's probably some poor soul who desperately needs the work and is forced to do anything.

Anyway, when hubby answers his voice suddenly becomes high pitched so I know exactly who's calling. He pretends he has killed someone in his 'accident' and driven away. He starts begging them not to call the police etc etc and sounds really panicked. I swear that one day we'll get a full swat team turn up on our doorstep!!

Rather than getting stressed, they are turning this around with a sense of humour! I'm going to take a leaf out of their books if I have one of these calls and have some fun!

I'm loving these reactions!  ;D Doubt my hubby would do that as he detests time wasting of any kind these days. I'd love to pull it off, but would end up giggling.

My sister is really wicked. :diablo:

She tells the cold caller that the person they are asking for is 'dead', and then pretends to be very upset.

She never has the same company call twice ;D

"Oh, do you mean the person who we buried recently" -type response then  ::)
