Title: Ovestin side effect
Post by: rebecca on October 24, 2016, 11:57:48 AM
I had to get a repeat prescription and had to see a locum who only gave me 1 tube, when I queried this she said I had to see my GP if I wanted more.
This morning I spoke to another doctor at the clinic  and asked why I was only given one. He said that I had been on it a long time ( 6 years) and could I stop using it?
I said that I had tried that and my symptoms were unbearable, even reducing the dose to a half dose troubled me. He said that he had just got a letter from a consultant about another patient who used Ovestin and he warned Doctor's that this may cause DVT  :-\
Now as I fly frequently (business and pleasure) , this has started to worry me.   He said that this is why some doctors are cautious/nervous  prescribing it...
I asked if there was any alternative and he said no! I told him that if there was, I would be first in the queue to take it, what choice did I have ?
Once again this visit has made me feel unsettled.  I also have a UTI (with blood in urine sample)  so also came away with a 3 day course of Trimethoprim.

What would be great is a Phase 3 trial of a Non Estrogen Vaginal cream  ;D

Anyone else been warned about DVT who is on Ovestin?

Thanks
Rebecca

I find this VERY hard to believe personally, there are ladies who have been on local oestrogen for 20 plus years.

The lady HRT consultant I was with says she will take her vagifem to her grave with her.

Also three days of trimethoprim is bad medicine re UTIs.

That's how antibiotic resistance is being caused.

Maryjane
Can you explain what you mean by the three days of Trimethoprim?
Are you suggesting to take it longer?
Thanks
Rebecca

rebecca - DVT with Ovestin is rubbish to my knowledge. Doc is using standard info on HRT risks which is printed on all local oestrogen leaflets. Estriol is very weak anyway ( re systemic effects). You can use it for life. Look at the NICE Guidelines and print off the relevant part if necessary. Any doc who does not know that VA is a long term irreversible well-known post-menopausal condition (without continued use of local oestrogen) is not worth their salt and you should find someone in your practice who is knowledgeable about menopause and go to that doc for your meno issues!

Without going into masses of info , 3 days of trimethoprim ( or any antibiotics) is far to short as itnis simply not long enough, and a vast majority of UTIs are now resistant to trimethoprim because of the way it has been used in this way.

There is a parliamentary debate going on this Friday at 2.30pm headed by Catherine West MP for 30 minutes , regarding the inadequacies and treatment of UTIs.

The world of UTI testin / treating is on the cuspe of changing all bought about by an incredible man called Professor James Malone-Lee and a group of amazing ladies on a secret Face book page, I honestly do not think there is anyone more compassionate or dedicated to his patients anywhere else.

He is amazing and is standing up to the establishment, and in years to come there will be shock / horror as to how UTIs are tested/ treated.

That is rubbish....if transdermal Systemic HRT poses no DVT risk how can a topical oestrogen be a risk factor.

Weird question but is your GP in Essex? I have had a similar issue. Local meno Consultant at Colchester sorted him out. I am interested to know if there is an Essex connection?

It's worrying a dr believes that, my young well woman nurse took vagifem off my repeats as she said I was 'too oestrogened up', after a visit to a GP for another UTI the doc put vagifem straight back on repeats !

When I needed to get my Estrogel put back on repeat, the younger than me GP was horrified that I was rubbing it on my shoulders, she told me it was for vaginal use only. She didn't know it was systemic HRT.

Maryjane

Thanks for your input, funny enough, I also asked the doctor to prescribe me an emergency supply of UTI treatment if it re-occurs when I am travelling overseas.
So he prescribed me 7 days supply in total (14 tabs - 200MG) and told me to take these tablets straight away for 3 days and keep the rest as spare   :-\
He did say that the bugs/bacteria are getting more resistant to anti-biotics and he may have to prescribe something else if they don't work.
I will read about Professor James Malone-Lee.... interestingly my gynae told me on my last visit to him that doctors are not treating UTI's correctly, but as they are you first port of call when they flare up, what other choice do you have???
I may now take the anti's for longer and request another spare prescription to hold.

Tipsydilly
I am in the Surrey area. It is notoriously difficult here to get an appointment with a GP inside 2.5 weeks.
You have to ring on the day for emergency appointments (average waiting time 20 mins).
I always try to see a female doctor, this male doctor was the only appointment available, the other option the receptionist told me was the walk in centre !

Thanks for your input ladies.....

I put a thread up a few days ago in " all things menopause " heading UTIs being discussed in parlithis friday , read both papers and it will explain.
