Title: Return of Periods after 18 Months
Post by: Shazzie on October 15, 2016, 02:38:57 PM
Hi everyone. Hope you are all doing ok.

I haven't had a period for 18 months then all of a sudden just now I started up again. A real shock.  : >:(

Ii'm 56 and had a recent smear test which came back normal.

Anyone else?

Take care.

Hi Shazzie

I think you are advised to check in with your GP as it has been over a year since your last period. Did you have any warnings beforehand like ovulation signs or PMT? I am sure all will be fine but checking in with the doctor is what I would do.

I don't think I had such a gap between my bleeds once they had 'finished' ….. best have a chat with your Practice Nurse?  How heavy is the bleed or could it be a polyp that has popped during the smear?

Hi Shazzie

It is quite common that this happens apparently so don't panic about it, it's probably just a sneaky little viable egg that had tucked itself away!! Our hormones don't settle until 2-3 years after our last menstrual cycle so these hormones will continue to stimulate and try to find a viable egg.

I agree with Machair and CLKD though. It is suggested that if you have a bleed after a gap of a year that you should get it checked out with your GP. It's very simple usually, normally a transvaginal scan. All very easy and painless!

What an absolute bore for you!

All good wishes x

Thanks so much for all your really helpful replies.

The little bleed only lasted a couple of hours. Completely gone now. Really odd. I'll give my gp a ring tomorrow  though.

I didn't have any of the usual symptoms that we usually  have  before  the  period.
