My Mum since about age 70, she's nearly 90. Maybe your throat has dried a little, after all the rest of the body dries at this time of Life. Mum has a glass of cold water which she sips between mouthfuls. Have a look at your diet and make sure that there is plenty of liquid-type food for a while, i.e. soups, wet curry rather than dry, if you stir-fry then put plenty of tinned tomatoes in the mix ……. you will learn to eat without choking as you adapt.

Take your time eating. The fear will recede gradually. Although I haven't suffered from choking, I did suffer from spasms of the oesophagus as a reaction to wheat and other foods. It was very frightening at first and very painful if I tried to swallow and I would vomit. What helped was sparkling water, which I carried with me at all times. Fortunately, this extreme reaction has calmed down to a feeling of a lump in the throat. I suspect your experience is a one off, so time will take the fear away. And fear is a natural reaction.

Yes, this has been happening to me on a few occasions. When it first started, it was scary but I seem to have got used to it. I'm not sure how it happens or why. Of course it will have scared you, but being tense when you are eating will not help you. I would do as the Dr suggests and eat slowly and smaller bite sizes. I have been lucky that I have always being around people when it happens so there is always someone to pat me on the back. I try not to talk now while I'm eating as I'm sure that used to cause it as well.

Years++ ago I read that our whole Life would be improved if we took time over food, like the Romans did. Hey Ho! I don't have that amount of time but the suggestion was to put down fork and knife as one chews each piece …… and not to make conversation at meal times as we take in air = indigestion.

I've always eaten really fast in case I 'go off' the meal in front of me :-\ = nausea.

I can have problems with bread in that it literally sticks in my oesphagus and I need to drink to move it but not with any other food. this isn't choking though - that must have been so scary.
I always have a glass of water to hand and as has been said the most dangerous practise is eating and talking or turning your head as you swallow.
I can even choke when speaking if I turn my head at the same time and that choking on nothing!

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for the Appt.? In the mean time, cut your food and eat slowly. Think about any particular 'dry' foods that you can cut out until the appt.?

Hi I have always had a fear of choking so eat small amounts and chew it so it's a complete mulch, it takes a bit longer to eat a meal but then your stomache hasn't got to work so hard to digest it which is a good thing, I have soup a lot too. It gets to a point sometimes that my swallow reflex says no I'm not doing it lol. You will be fine.

Hi just joules, it might be worth getting some rescue remedy the spray version, I use that if I'm nervous or feel anxious, use it 10 minutes before you eat it may relax you. It is only herbal so not harmful. Good luck xx

Do you have more 'solid' food in the evening? Try a small amount and chew slower?

They do say eat breakfast like a King, lunch like a Queen and dinner like a Pauper. For the next few days, try to eat more at breakfast and lunch so that dinner becomes something light and then you might not get the tension if you know it's not a big meal.
