Title: Ahoy Sock Knitters!!!
Post by: Tempest on August 21, 2016, 07:07:47 PM
Anybody else here who likes knitting socks? I've been knitting them now for about 6 years, and am addicted! I'm also a member of Ravelry. Anyone else here a member? Please say hello!! :)

Yes I'm a sock knitter and must have knitted about 20 pairs now for family members. We all love them. I've got a dodgy knee at the moment but normally i walk a lot and always wear hand knitted socks as they are so comfy and made to measure. Hubby and daughter ride so they wear them under riding boots and son just wears them all the time.

I use the self patterning yarn mainly and every so often i make a pair of very random ones from all the leftover bits.

Hoorah!! I just knew there had to be another sock knitter on here! :)

I love the Opal yarn Penny-farthing. It's very hard wearing too and I love that they bring out new collections. My stash of sock yarn in shamefully large, I have to admit! ;) :)

I usually do the free pattern that comes with Opal yarn but I do use other makes too. I have knitted about 6 pairs of a pattern called Circle Socks (google it) and they're lovely because the leg part is really squidgy and comfy when you're wearing walking boots.

I used to knit jumpers but haven't done anything other than scarves for years. I still have some wool, and definitely don't need any more scarves  :-X so wondering if there's a really, really easy pattern you could recommend for socks, and mean really easy  ;)

you can download it here and it is dead easy pattern

There are much prettier self patterning yarns than the one shown. A 100 g ball of sock yarn will knit you 3 adult socks or 1 adult pair plus a toddler pair. NOt bad for about £6.50.  A lot of sock knitters I know do actually knit 3 socks as they last longer!  HAving said that, I have socks which have been worn and washed hundreds of times (machine washable) for many years and are still going strong. I can't imagine anyone bothering to knit a pouch to,put the socks in though! ;D

It is highly addictive so beware!

Sorry for the stupid question but does it have to be specialist sock wool?

Hi, getting_old! Now, let's see if we can get you hooked on sock knitting too! Penny-farthing has linked to a fantastic pattern there! :)

Can I suggest also going along to the Winwick Mum Sock Knitalong Facebook group? They are a FABULOUS crowd over there, and the creator Christine has written a very detailed and easy pattern for complete beginners, and you can get loads of support and ask questions in the group. Everyone shares their successes with photos (and failures too - no one is judging)!

Yes, sock wool is better because it has nylon content, which helps the socks to retain their shape and wear much better. You can get some real bargains on eBay - it doesn't have to be the fancy stuff to begin with. Just do an eBay search under 'sock yarns' or visit your local knitting shop. Most carry them these days.

Have you ever tried double pointed needles before? If not, don't be afraid! Once you get the knack, it feels like alchemy and everyone who sees you knitting thinks it's so clever! Christine in the Winwick Mum Facebook Group also includes information in her pattern on how to buy and use a special tiny circular needle to use instead, which is much easier.

We'll get you knitting socks in no time, and like penny-farthing says, its very addictive (I also like it because it's a very portable project that you can take anywhere, and because knitting with bigger chunkier yarn actually makes my hot flushes worse. Who knew)??? :o :)

Good post Tempest. I will look at that site myself.

the only other thing I would say about sock yarn is that self patterning is so much more fun than plain as you finish one colour and want to get onto the next colour to see how the pattern develops. THe socks therefore get knitted much quicker!  ;)

Oh and I know there are bargains on line but I do think we should all try and support our local yarn shops. So many people complain when they disappear but it's no wonder if people buy yarn online.

I knitted a pair of socks with the self-patterning yarn once  ::)

It was fun and no ends to finish off  ;D

Great isn't it Dahliagirl? When I knit anything else I spend nearly as much time sewing it all up and finishing off.

I have been crocheting a blanket - lovely squares with flowers in, but so many ends >:(  Took longer to put it together.

Just jumping in here!  Where are you going wrong?  as long as each edge is symmetrical you should be OK.

I have made several big crochet throws from granny squares and if I knew how to post pics on here I would so so.

I cant form the circle at the very start when you make your chain and join in fine and I can join it but then I get in a right muddle when you put the hook through the middle all I gets a tangled knot ! I just think I'm not cut out to crotchet though I can do normal squares just not granny ones 😐

That's a common problem. I would make the circle as loose as you can so you can see a definite hole. You could even poke something in that hole to ensure you get all trebles in that one hole and remove when you've done them.

I am not good at crochet.  I learned mostly from the Ladybird book of crochet when I was young, but that is now lost!

My beautiful flower squares, when I came to put them together, had varying side lengths.  I have no idea how that happened.  I get confused as to where the hook goes - sometimes it goes into the row of 'chain' that appears on the top of the previous row of stitches and sometimes it goes between trebles and such like, and the patterns/learning books seem to skip over things like that and leave you to work it out.  I managed to bodge it and it looks fine from a distance.  8)

Anyway, my tension is all over the place, so I am now crocheting a blanket in rows of half-trebles which change colour every row and hoping that this will help me to get neater. The instructions on how to change colour are good, but you still have to sew the ends in!!

Thank you both I will have another granny square go and if I cant conquer it then do the plain squares in not bothered if there even it all adds character . It looks so easy but it isn't 😏
