Title: Update on appendix cancer
Post by: marras on August 12, 2016, 05:39:46 PM
Hi ladies, some of you may remember I had my perforated appendix removed seven weeks ago and was then called back and told that histology revealed an appendix adenocarcinoma with an involved margin (microscopic cancer cells at the incision site). My colonoscopy was clear and so was my CT scan. However, because of the nature of my cancer (Taz2, its not PMP) it needs further treatment at a specialist centre of which there are only two in the country, Basingstoke and Manchester. I had a consultation at the Hampshire clinic yesterday and have been advised to undergo a bowel resection and a procedure called HIPEC, Hot Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy, whereby they bathe the area with chemo, leave it for 90 minutes and then take it out again. The reason for this is they don't know if any rogue cancer cells were spread when my appendix burst and this will give me the best survival rate. The other option is to just have the bowel resection and then have regular scans. However, past experience has shown that if the cancer comes back, by the time it is detected it is too late. I am due to have this major operation on Monday 22nd August. I shall be in theatre for 6 - 7 hours, in ITU for around three days and in hospital for about three weeks. It will be three months for a full recovery. I am very scared but know I have to go through with it as I want to see my grandsons grow up. I know I'm in good hands, they are wonderful at the clinic and I am so thankful that I had appendicitis otherwise the tumour would have sat there undetected doing its worst.

Thanks for the update.  You sound as though you have a good Surgical Team to take care of you.  Do make a list of worries to take with you and don't be afraid to ask, will you have someone to advocate for you?

 :foryou:

Thank you so much ladies for your replies, especially Taz2 who PM 'd me but I didn't know how to PM back! It's good to know that someone knows the Hampshire clinic and that I'm in good hands. I have a wonderful husband who will be with me and my daughter, so am well supported. Just need some inner peace and acceptance to see me through.

Once you get into the 'swing' of things you'll be OK, it's the hanging about that allows the brain to get going  >:(  ::).

Have plenty of treats, i.e. nice soaps, comfy slippers, new nickkers ……..

Glad it was helpful marras. If you look at the pm you will see a "reply" arrow in the top right of the message box. Just click on that and it should open up a box to reply in. Good luck!
