I remember one Christmas at school we all had to say what we would like from Father Christmas at the school christmas party.  A little boy in my class wanted a pop gun.  I couldn't think of anything to say as I was not allowed to ask for things for christmas, I just got what I was given so I said a pop gun too even though I didn't know what it was.
Come the school christmas party santa duly arrived and gave out the presents.  One of the girls got a bride doll and I thought I might get one too. I opened my parcel to find..........a pop gun as requested. I didn't know what to do with it and I am sure that the teacher knew from my expression that I was horrified and wanted to cry.

Oh my goodness, I have just diagnosed why I don't like christmas presents and don't trust them  :o

Yep Babyjane - we called it 'lastic'  ::)

Hop-skotch in the play-ground

I had/have a Hornby train set; a walky-talky doll; skipping; jacks; teddy; panda; Annuals; jigsaws; skipping ropes; roller skates; trike; 2-wheeler; buckets, spades and flags on sticks at the beach

Oh Babyjane - when I got my walky-talky doll one C.mas it fell over and went 'mama' at the bottom of the bed  ::) - we were sharing a room with our parents as we were at Granny's that year.  I was disappointed because she has blonde, curly hair: the doll, not Granny: I had seen one with long dark hair in the playground that year and that was what I wanted.  She's with me still though ;-)

I was given an exquisite porcelain china doll in a satin dress when I was about 4 (how stupid!) Of course I wanted to play with her but this was not the sort of doll that was to be played with.  I undid her plaits, brushed out her hair so it resembled a birds nest, drew 'make up' on her face and coloured in one of her teeth. I never understood what I had done wrong, I just knew it was very serious  :'(  When an elderly great uncle gave our little daughter a dressed china doll many years later we took it away and put it safely in the wardrobe in its box and took DD to the toy shop and bought her a doll of her choosing, hence she did not suffer the same trauma I did.

Goodness me this is turning into the 'therapy support' thread  :-X

I had (and still have) a bear and a knitted rabbit.

Also had lego and the wobbly people that were shaped like eggs that you can't knock over.  Can't remember their proper name, but they came with a playground set - swings and a roundabout.

And Britain's farm and zoo animals - loved these.  We visited the Cotswold Wildlife Park every Easter and Summer when we had our holiday with my grandmother, so I got a new animal twice a year.

I can't remember wanting any toys I didn't have, although I did ask for a baby elephant (a real one) for Christmas when I was about 3.  ;D

Elastics
Jacks
Scraps, especially those sickly Swedish ones!
Skeelers - 3-wheel roller skates that I won when I got a letter published in Bunty (or whatever!)
Skipping (anyone remember bumps??)
Clackers (oh, ouch!)
Those ring-things that went round one ankle while the other foot skipped over it
Pogo stick
My brothers' space hopper

I remember elastic twist, marbles and jacks.

We had a large a large box of Bako, which was going cheap as Lego came on the market. It had bases with small holes for metal rods, where you could slide the bricks down. You could make some great houses, but not as versatile as Lego.

I was given a toy mangle, which made a wonderful horse! And ladybird books which made wonderful steps for houses created on the armchairs. We didn't have loads of toys, but adapted whatever came our way. Old kitchen cupboard doors made wonderful rafts to go on an imaginary river.

I still have my teddy, minus eyes, nose and very little fur. And no squeak due to the fact I used to jump on him apparently!

Clackers (oh, ouch!)
Oh, I remember them!  Got mine in 1970 (I think) when me and mum went to Spain after she divorced my dad.  Mine were ivory (probably imitation) but boy did they hurt when they cracked your wrist.

What were those funny long tubes called that you used to whiz in circles above your head and they would make  a droning noise?

Also remember looooving a Jacko monkey that looked like a chimpanzee.  He could hang from doorframes and everything!

I really wanted a dolls house so made my own. I used to collect cereal boxes and form them into room sets. With every new box another extension was added. I decorated the walls with wallpaper scraps and made curtains from scraps of my mother's dress making fabrics. It was all rather psychedelic! It ended up like Buckingham Palace! (Or so I thought!). I collected mini Scandi style wooden furniture to furnish it but never felt the need for mini dolls to use it.

I remember borrowing my brother's Chopper bike which was much more exciting than mine. I too remember; Clackers (many bruises); used to link elastic bands that the postman dropped for French skipping; Christmas annuals; weekly Beano and Bunty; Mousetrap and Frustration; Meccano and Lego. I loved those iron-filing faces where you moved the filings with a magnet. Spirograph was a firm favourite and I well remember the frustration when very young of not being adept enough to keep the shapes within the teeth of the frames.

I was a complete bookworm though and adored collecting mini libraries of book collections; the complete works of Enid Blyton, Penguin Children's Classics, Aesop's Fables and so many others that I can remember so well. I took enormous care looking after them but my little sister wrote all over them playing schools, pretending to mark exercise books. I was a teenager by then so she was easily forgiven, she was a little minx and able to get away with everything!

Good thread :)

Tiny tears doll( the one where you pressed the button on her tummy to make her wee)
Spirograph
Annuals
Colouring books & crayons
Girls World
A bride doll that I saw In our local shop window and use to go and look at her everyday after school.
I'd go home and tell my parents how lovely she was. One day I looked in the window and she had a sold ticket on. I went home in tears only to find out Christmas Day that my parents had bought it for me and I still have her,but not the bride dress she was in,but one of my baby dresses. I named her Susan.

Ludo; Snap; Happy Families; Patience …….

My sister had 'spirograph' but I was never allowed to borrow it nor did I get one  :-\ - at aged 9 it was thought I was too young.

Very early on I had a Post Office set with stamp, books of stamps, small envelopes …… once they were used however, that was it so I tended to use a pencil so that they lasted longer. I would set up on a chair with a back so that Mum would pay through the gap  ::)

My little nurses outfit which came with a doctor's "case" for my Christmas one year. I wore that outfit to death! All my dolls were operated on.  ;D

My championship yoyo! My brother, who was 10 years older & much more proficient at it, and I competed with each other to see who could do the best tricks. Of course as he was much taller he could manage more than me.  Wish I'd kept it!

I couldn't bear the feel of the frame that Fuzzy Felts stuck to  >:(

Haha, just caught up with this thread and see that it has expanded to sweets. What about sherbet pips? My dad used to go crazy because he's find the sticky little things all over the house and stuck in the carpets. Does anyone remember liquorice comforts? We used to use them as makeup, red on the lips and blue and green on our eyelids. Once it dried it was difficult opening your eyes! Can you imagine how many e numbers they contained?

I had completely forgotten about my post office, I loved it, how wonderful to remember!

Kaleidoscope. One I had, had little fragments of coloured cellophane in to make the pretty patterns, until one went in my eye & that was the end of that. Before the days of toy safety.

Anyone remember making/ playing with a Cat's cradle?

Cats cradle yes and a game that involved rhyming and touching your hands onto another persons and yourself! A sailor went to see sea sea etc 😊
Another game that didn't involve anything but ourselves was 'Simon Says' we also used to play 'Rover Rover you cant one over' and ' british bull dog' all rough games but I did have 3 brothers ! A game they used to enjoy was to balance a pile of books or a dish of water on the top of the door and watch with merriment as I went through the door unawares and had it all hit me on the head !

I had one of those footsie things too. Loved it. Plus the one with the tennis ball on the post that swung round - can't remember what it was called.
I remember wanting a skateboard but not being allowed one so having to make do with goes on a friends. I did have roller skates though, and absolutely loved making up routines with them. I tried inline skates a few years ago but only when it was very flat, until I fell over on the front path - that was embarrassing  :'(

Getting old do you mean a,swing ball ? What about them things that were very long nylon cords with handles at each end and a sort of plastic rugby shaped ball on the cord and a,person took each handle and opened their arms and the balll would shoot down the cord to the other person and they would do the same to return it ?

as usual I 'wasn't allowed one because I would get fed up with it' which translated meant that I wouldn't get one because it cost money  :(  I had to be content with my cousin's hand me down roller skates and skipping rope but my father did make me some wooden stilts that I got rather good at and an aunt bought me a pogo stick one year  :)

Yes, I think it was called a swing ball.
Didn't have one of those things with the cords / rugby ball but do remember them

My friend had some stilts, which were actually fence posts with footholds nailed on. I wasn't very good on those, and a pogo stick - fortunately she was a nice friend who shared. She also had some things which looked like upside down flower pots that you stood on, and they had strings attached that you held, which were sort of like stilts because they lifted you about a foot off the ground. Anyone have those?

did anyone else have a walkie talkie made out of two empty tin cans and a length of string, and did it actually work cos mine didn't.  I also had little stones in a tin can to rattle.  I don't think we were aware of what we didn't have back then.  Can you imagine it today when children seem to be so much more aware of what others have that they don't.

On the subject of sweets, did anyone else have that bright yellow lemonade powder?  You were supposed to dissolve it in hot water and then cool it down for lemonade, but I liked to eat it straight out of the bag like sherbet!  Loved sherbet lemons too, and toffee & lemon bonbons.

Slightly off-topic, but has anyone read 'The Fortnight in September' by R C Sherriff?  Thinking about how much simpler things were in the past has reminded me of this book, and I'd recommend it to anyone in a nostalgic mood.  It's just about a family going on holiday to the beach for two weeks, but what I love is the way little things are so special to them.  Like having Ginger Beer EVERY day because it's a holiday, and how excited they are to collect their 24 photographs from the chemist and how it's really special because this year they have a beach hut with a veranda...  It's not much good if you like a book with lots of plot, but I love it because it takes me back to my childhood & reminds me of a time when we weren't so pressured to acquire more, more, more all the time.

We used to go out for tea & cake in a café once on our summer holiday and once just before Christmas.  The place we went to just before Christmas had a 'set tea' where you could either have one large slice of gateaux or three little cakes of your choice.  I always chose the 3 cakes and used to spend ages deciding which ones to have.  I could never manage to eat all 3 so used to take one home and eat it just before bedtime on Christmas eve.

Oh yes the yellow powder, like U I ate it from the packet.  It tasted insipid when watered down.

Large bubble gum sheets in sweet packets but can't remember which sweets.
White tubes that looked like cigarettes with red tips?  Thought I was posh with those though I never went on to smoke  ::)

Dad built a sand pit which he covered over at night with a lid - we had toy cars, buckets, spades, old margine tubs to play with in there.

I remember it came in a cone shaped paper and you licked your finger and dipped it in.  It turned the end of your finger yellow.  I think it was called something like kali (pronounced kay-lie)

No wonder we had fillings as children  ::)

So to recap: scooter, skipping rope, cycles, roller skates and if we fell, there was a tin of sweeties and Dettol.

Dolls, teddies, sweet shop, post office set; no Mecanno or Lego - that was for the boy cousins  ::)

What about the game where you wrote things on paper and folded the paper into, shape that sat on fingers and someone would choose a number then unfold the paper ?

Yep, we had ludo which we played as a family on a Sunday evening - no TV in our house until I was 13.

If it was wet Mum would find a large white sheet and a blanket and we would play 'dens' underneath the family table which pulled out ….. OK as long as we didn't put on the legs  ;D

Wracking my brain for board games that I played as a child, but actually have no recollection of any, apart from snakes & ladders. Board games became a feature in my teenage years as my friends had things like Monopoly & Cluedo. Patience, now I played a lot of that! Don't think my mum could be bothered with such things.

I was taught to play chess at the age of 7 - a 'proper' game.  Can't remember that I enjoyed it much but I just did as I was told if it kept parents happy  :(
