Having had back pain on standing and walking for years, I suddenly had a very acute attack starting April, cut to yesterday results of X-ray show I have fractured spine at T6, or collapsed vertebrae.
Dr thinks osteoporosis but right now can't treat me as I'm long term fragmin and allergic to vitamin D and that's needed with osteo pills.
I'm 54 and was not ready for this diagnosis. Reading loads and floundering, agh nightmare
-
You poor thing! No way would I be ready for this diagnosis either, even with your difficulties.
Will you get to see a specialist in osteoporosis? (and will they be able to hel? ::) )
-
Maybe contact the UK Osteoporosis Society for advice?
Make a list and ask ……….. what have you been given : [I don't understand 'fragmin' :-\]
-
Dahliagirl I'm seeing a Rheumy that understands APS my blood clotting disorder, trouble is I doubt he's a specialist in osteoporosis too.
Right now I have nothing, GP too scared.
-
CLKD fragmin is a blood thinning injection I use daily. Beyond that who knows what I will get.
-
:thankyou: ………
GP should be sending you to a Specialist!
-
CLKD I know but he just threw his hands in the air and said he had never met a case like me and had no idea what to do.
-
Hello Sarai.
Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Hopefully you'll be seeing 2 experts if one can't advise on both conditions.
A friend of mine recently broke her wrist and has now been told she has severe osteoporosis. She is in shock so I have a very slight idea about what you are going through.
I hope you get effective treatment ASAP.
Take care and please let us know how you get on.

My GP told me "I don't know how to remove a running stitch" - my reply, "Well it's time you learned so practice on mine" - I was shocked to the core. Had I know I would have removed it myself.
At least your GP is honest :-\. Go back and ask what he has decided!!!!
-
I would seriously consider a private consultant, if only to get the full picture.
GPs never know more than the more usual conditions/situations so you may have to take the lead.
It's your health so go and kick arse. :valkyrie:
-
Plenty of suggestions here - let us know how you get on!
-
Does anybody know of any Facebook groups for osteoporosis I've scanned around Facebook and can't seem to find one but feel sure there would be one.
-
No I don't do 'social media' because people might not be 'real' there!
First :-\ you should consider contacting the Society as suggested above, that's where the knowledge is and no scare stories there!

Hello again ladies.
I just wanted to add that I saw my friend with the broken wrist today and she told me she had found the NOS forum very helpful.
She also told me that the first person she saw at the Minor Iinjuries Clinic didn't believe her wrist could be broken because she hadn't actually fallen on it and he'd never known anyone break a bone by twisting it as she had done. I find it amazing that a health professional can be so ignorant of the likelihood of Osteoporosis in older people! He was convinced he was right and refused to x ray her wrist and it was only later when she saw her GP that she was diagnosed correctly.
CLKD - I'm not surprised you don't do other social media, where would you find the time?
Take care ladies.

Off to Bgin a new thread [if I remember]

Hello CLKD.
I rest my case!

CLKD........I'm real........at least I think I am....... ;D
-
To everybody who replied, I am used to social media and am a lot of facebook groups, I'm admin on one for autoimmune disease and believe me we are all very real people.
I have info from NOS due to the fact I have a friend with it who pushed me years ago when I was told I had osteopaenia but nothing at all was done.
So here I am due my 3 year dexa in November with a fracture. The friend is saddened as she saw it coming and campaigns hard to get gps and public in general to recognise the signs.
My gp just threw his hands in the air like I was too much trouble and said he had no idea what to do with me.
I'm going to ask to be referred to Sheffield Metabolic Bone clinic as this friend goes there, she has severe osteo due to Dr neglect.
But right now I just have to be careful and wait, but basically it will not heal as 'normal' breaks do, as it is crushed.
I'm still in shock and disbelief, that at 54 lots of fun I had planed has gone, like I really wanted to learn to ride a horse. Not to mention the damn pain.
Oh well moan over.

However: unless people go to their GPs for advice ……… :-\ the best area of the body for scanning is the pelvis as it has depth. I had DEXA on my ankles/feet for a few years but it wasn't really often enough to give a true measurement. But in a work situation a pelvic scan was impossible ::).
Change your GP?

Oddly he's a new GP at a new practice, but I think I jumped out of the frying pan into the fire. Getting an appointment with them is easy but my last few consults have been rubbish.
This last one left me in so much limbo. I was given not one bit of advice or offer of pain meds.
Bearing in mind my position in meno, like right in the middle, my anxiety which has been great for months is having a field day, without a diagnosis of osteoporosis and me not having a full on fall, I've convinced myself its actually bone cancer. Sadly had a friend who died from it, her symptoms, back ache.
Ive decided to go back to my old GPs, that will be a laugh, but at least I knew them and they knew me.
I bloody hate my life
