Title: Laundry advice
Post by: Snowball on June 08, 2016, 12:53:18 PM
I'm hoping someone can help with my problem.  I have bought a lovely sleeveless sundress that is white with a navy floral pattern. The fabric is viscose/cotton/linen and washing instructions say gentle wash, do not bleach. I have found the navy dye has run in places - I think where there is rubbing - e.g. under the arm area (I'm not THAT sweaty!!!! - I hope  ;D).

Any ideas how I can stop the dye transfer?

I used one of those dye catchers you put in your machine, for a top which did similar.

I would play safe and handwash, at least for the first couple of times.  I had a lovely summer skirt once like that, and when I machine washed it, the darker colour left splodges on the lighter colour & I had to throw it out  :(

Glad you're not that sweaty - but I've ruined a couple of fair-trade tops as I sweated so much the colours ran under the arms.  Grrrrrrrr!  Menopause!

I agree with Cubagirl, I would use a colour catcher.

 :thankyou:
I haven't used Colour Catcher before (didn't know it existed) but will give it a go.  Thank you ladies.

BTW Dorothy, you have my sympathy. I like the style of this dress and it is very comfortable so it would be a real shame to have to throw it out because under the arms looked unsightly.

Off to the shops...

They allow you to do a mixed load, rather than doing the usual darks, whites and coloureds.

However: Himself and I read the bottles in the supermarket this week - ingredients all the same!  I would be taking the dress back to the shop!

If I am concerned about new clothing I hand wash in clear, cool water and drip dry.

Just a quick update.  I machine washed with the colour catcher and the dress looks much better. There is still a little faint blueness just at the armhole but other than that it is perfect. Unfortunately the shrug I wore with it still has blue staining at the armpits, so I have put it back in to rewash. The cc sheet came out pale blue so it obviously is working.

Thanks for your help everyone. x

A slight meander: does anyone see "bounce" sheets on the shelves these days, I have used them as drawer/case liners for years but can't find them!

Hi CLKD
I remember them! Out of curiosity I did a search on all the main supermarket online sites and can't see these, but they are available on Amazon. It's really annoying when a favourite product goes out of favour. My husband has a particular favourite brand of shampoo that I can only buy at one local(ish) supermarket now.

Earlier I rattled an almost empty box of 'persil' powder and was surprised to find a whole 'wash' between the two layers of cardboard!  As the boxes are filled in the Factory I expect there's spillage ......... so B4 I put the box into re-cycling I carefully poured into the appropriate tray in the machine, ready for the next load.  That's 2p saved then  ;D

I use powder - a small amount as our clothes aren't dirty.  Occasionally a softener and 'calgon' alternate loads.

Apparently, if we use liquid detergent ALL the time in our washing machines, we can get a build up of scum in the drum, and that makes our clothes smell!
A repair man told me that years ago, so, now, I use both, sometimes powder, sometimes liquid, just to stop that happening.
Also, we should do a machine clean every month.!
I use bleach, or bleach tablets to do that.
But I also pop a bleach tablet in when I wash my white towels, keeps them really white, and cleans the machine too.

I use liquid detergent always and my last machine lasted over 10 years, before it died.

No need for any special cleaning products. Just do a boil wash with no laundry, if it gets smelly.  I also never use the soap drawer and put everything in the drum. I don't use fabric softener either.

Years ago we were fed the crap that we could keep clothing clean at 30 degrees.  WRONG! the laundry needs a long cycle to get the powder out of the fabrics and hot helps to keep the gubbins working  ;).  I went back to higher washes appropriately.

I can't use fabric conditioner it gives me a headache when I smell it in the clothes, even when it isn't really strong  ??? I have had to re wash some clothes just to get rid of the smell  :(

I find colour catcher sheets brilliant, although I cut them in half before I use them  ::) who says I'm mean  ;D

I'm doing a Boil Wash right now - bath towels and mats, there's a good blow out there but a Very Black Cloud which seems to have stopped over our garden  :D

I've been in B&M today (not sure if I should have said that) and they had Lenor tumble dryer sheets.
I bought a box for old times sake.

Only use our dryer in an emergency.  So that's about twice a year.

I used that surgical spirit on my OHs expensive jeans, (didn't really know if I should, 🙀)
he got black oil on the pocket from somewhere, and I'm pleased to report it came out!
I was dreading telling him I'd ruined em by experimenting with the stuff....
But no, alls good.....😂😂.  Phew....😥

Morning.  Advice required.

I have a lovely, acrylic jumper which has been in the charity pile and back out again so often in the last 25 years ! but does good service.  However, I can't remove the static.  I don't use softener ......... it's had a cool rinse and gently spin. Would vinegar get rid of the static?

Hi CLKD, I find if I have a dress with this problem if I spray the inside with hairspray right before putting it on that works. Don't know why but does the trick.

Thanks.

    Wear a 'marigold' glove to wipe round the inside of the drum worked when we had pets.  Or wash affected clothing in a pillow case though it may escape from the opening  ::).

I keep forgetting to check pockets for tissues. DH is a frequent offender and should, of course, remove them, but forgets. It’s a nightmare removing bits off the clothes and from the washing machine. Any suggestions how I can train DH? He finds all my swearing and temper tantrums amusing! ;D

Tissues are better now that they don't go into such small pieces  ;D - I usually give the clothing a very good shake outdoors.

I'm guilty of the tissues in pockets, but today went one better and covered a load of thermal Tshirts in tiny bits of down from a coat   :bang: I am so mad at myself right now. Trying to wash the Tshirts separately with everything crossed.

Anyway one place we lived we had a jacuzzi bath. They are wonderful at removing tissue etc. from clothes. Just pop the stuff in and give it a 5 minute "bath".

 ;D

I find that on a blowy day hanging Ts on the line I can pick off the bits of washed tissue, great for birds' nests.

Still have a crackly jumper.  >:(

I made the mistake of washing a large red tablecloth with the towels. Covered with fluff. I used a clothes brush, which took ages and lots of swearing and then rewashed. Yet to iron and examine. Fingers crossed. Certainly looked better.

Hang it out and let the birds peck off the fluff ?
