I have several pairs of shoes, mainly size 5. Real size is 4.5, but many places only do full sizes. However, when trying on new size 5's they're like boats. Old 5's are still worn regularly without them falling off. I can accept that my feet may be shrinking, however, why is there such a difference in shoe sizes. Are manufacturers making shoes bigger?
-
I've got the opposite problem CG - I'm finding that shoe sizes appear to be smaller although the ones I've tried on lately are not expensive shoes so maybe that's the difference?

I have worn size 4 until 6 months ago: now I need a 5 :-\

I was told that feet 'flatten' as people age. I hadn't thought that as with dress sizes, we are now being conned with shoe sizes ;D - even slippers are narrower and more un-comfortable >:(
-
Hello cubagirl.
I now consider all clothing sizes as a guide only, goodness knows what the manufacturers are playing at.
Apparently as we age and our collagen weakens our feet become wider, not sure about longer but I now find square toed flats oddly appealing!
Take care.

I agree about clothes, I have a variety of sizes in my wardrobe. My feet have shrunk length wise, width not increased too much, but then I had narrowish feet anyway. I've just ordered pair of 4.5 flats, will see how that goes.
-
My shoe size is 7 1/2 AAs. There are very few shops that stock narrows shoes, so I have to buy on line at great expense. As narrow shoes are not manufactured in this country, they have to be shipped in. Added to that my feet are very shallow, so my choice is limited.at least I'm not limited to boring brown lace ups as I was as a child. Heels are out of the question as my feet slip forwards. I am ordering average feet next time round! ::)
-
I have always had problems with shoe sizes as some are so inaccurate and i have big feet so can't just but a bigger size. Managed to get a pair today though. Am usually an 8 or 7.5 wide fit.

Hi Sparkle
Just noticed in your thread you have neuromaseen in both feet. I'm just having my left checked for these as been having foot pain for a long time. No matter what insoles are made to fit unless they are Super comfy my foot hurts. Have one pavers summer sandal that I can wear which is heaven but that's about it! And to make matters worse I dog walk every day. How did you have your diagnosed?
Thanks

I'm a 5, but always had trouble finding shoes to fit as my feet are very wide with a high instep and dodgy ankle joints (so any sole that slops inward toward the base, even if the shoe is flat, is out)
It got a lot worse when I started gardening for a living - being constantly in wellies or safety boots made my feet spread even further. I now live in pull-on boots in winter and flip-flops in summer as they are the only things I can find to fit. If I am invited anywhere that requires smarter footwear - forget it!
I do think cheap shoes are cut less generously though. I have never been able to find anything to fit in cheaper ranges. I've found Pavers is a good place to look as they usually have a good range of wide-fitting and/or flat shoes and boots. I hate anything with a heel!
-
I would love to be able to wear wellies, but they are boats on my feet. At least my feet are ok. And I do have ( very expensive) leather boots that fit my skinny legs and feet. I've have them for years and take great care of them. I do own a pair of red shoes, which I dreamed of as a child. I can't wear them for more than 10 minutes without pain, but.......... ::)

I only recently ditched my gorgeous red shoes. They had been lying in cupboard for many years. Courts with small peep toe. Last time I tried them on they were so painful! Ah well.

If there was one thing I'd change about my appearance, it'd be my shoe size. I'm 5'2" and take a size 6, but I'd have loved to have been a 5. One thing's certain - I'd have failed miserably on the marriage stakes in ancient China! Still, I mustn't complain. It makes it easier to hit the right organ pedals! ;D

When I was young, someone called my feet combine harvesters! Yes it upset me then.
I'm afraid thick socks doesn't work. People are surprised how narrow my feet actually are. I have just got hold of some AA ankle wellies in lime green, as I really need wellies when I stay with my son and it rains a lot. They were expensive and not what I really wanted.
I take comfort that I don't have AAA feet! Like many people 1 foot is 1/2 size longer than the other, which makes getting a good fit more difficult. Lace ups and Mary Jane shoes with low heels work best.
Shoes effect the style of clothes you wear. I wonder what kind of clothes I would choose if shoes were easier to find.
-
That's the only way I'll wear trousers, sparkle - with heels! ;D
-
I'm like that with clothes. See something really nice in a size 10, but looks awful in my size.
Guess we're never happy with our lot.
-
Hotters anyone?
Hunters have changed hands apparently and have had manufacturing problems. It's taken 15 months to begin getting the Brand name back into the public eye.
I never wear 2 pairs of socks. I did try years ago but one pair would rub …… now I wear the socks I use daily until they are worn at the heels then they go for rags. Walking shops have 'inners' which Himself has used underneath his daily socks. Mohair didn't last long ::). My walking shoes are my foot size worn with daily socks …… I used to cut that foil for putting behind radiators - would stand on the foil and trace round each foot then cut out, put into the bottom of Wellies or walking shoes kept my feet warm enough and not too thick - as long as they didn't move in the bottom of the footwear, I did try Blue-tak to keep them stuck properly ::)
-
Where can I buy trousers with heels?

;D

I would love to be able to wear wellies, but they are boats on my feet.
Ju Ju - It might be worth trying Buckbootz.
I've got 7 1/2 size feet and they fit so snugly, they do not fall off, awkward to remove in fact.
They're warm as well, they've got neoprene in them, probably why they fit so well.

GB was the biggest shoe manufacturer in Europe until recent years :'(. There's a shoe museum in Northampton! which is 'the home' of many Brands: Loakes for example.

Apparently only 6% of the population have very narrow feet. It's nice to be different.......sometimes! Not in this case. Manufacturers stopped making narrow shoes in the uk years ago. That's why shoes for me are so expensive as they have to shipped in. There are 3 companies that I know of that sell online. Fortunately they are very good at advice on fitting online, but of course you have to pay p&p on top of the cost of the shoes and I have made some expensive mistakes. Shoes feel comfortable initially, but prove not to be later, but that can happen when you buy in a shop. A few years ago, I was in NY in January and found this shoe shop specialising in narrow shoes. Very expensive, but they were having a sale. Lots of money off. And I was let loose with my credit card! ;) l can't persuade DH to take me back in January again. I don't know why! ;D
-
A young shoe shop sales assistant once said to me 'but they have to fit you because they don't come any larger' ! I'd love to take size 6 but needed a 7 by the age of 12.
-
Yes I remember K Shoes. Sad when they stopped making narrow shoes. As a child I dreamed of having red party shoes, but all that was available was brown lace ups.
Sadly, whether with clothes or shoes, if your size is not within the average range, you need bottomless pits of money and lack of taste! Though to be fair, these days, online narrow shoe companies do offer beautiful shoes at a price. It's the additional fitting problems l have that limits my choice. I've been bra shopping this week. In London. Pointless looking locally. What I really wanted was a plain smooth bra. To get a good comfortable fit, I have to wear lacy bras. I'm not a lacy person, but at least I'm well supported! And not horrendously expensive for once.
-
I'll see how I get on with the new ones, then order some more. Excellent idea!
-
I think shoe sizes are like dress sizes - they vary!!! For me the main issue is finding ANY shoes that fit!!!
I'm a size 2.5 and if one more person says I'm lucky because I can buy children shoes, I think I will punch them. I do not want shoes in strange colours or designs, especially bows and actually children's shoes are very uncomfortable - it's no wonder they often don't want to walk anywhere.
I hold on to the few shoes that I can wear for many years. I dread my favourites wearing out completely as I know the quest to find another pair will be so challenging. The look of disbelief on a shoe assistants face when I ask for even size 3 shoes is so depressing. Adding insoles rarely works as my feet still slide forward and back inside the shoes. I would love to enjoy shoe shopping.
Don't get me going on bra sizes and as for getting trousers that fit where you want them fit, well that's really depressing - I sometimes completely remake trousers I've bought. DG x

I am a size 4 and sometimes can get away with a 3.5 depending on the make and style.
I am never short of shoes to wear ... I love them :)
and have loads of different pairs all over the house ....
A tradesman once came to do a job and said to me "how many pairs of shoes does one women need?"
;D
-
They complete a lady's outfit, don't they? :)

Hi Sparkle
I don't know if I do have neuromas now as I dont get that pain? I was told I had them that's why I'm going for a scan. Is a Gait Scan worth having also to properly see how my biomechanics are? Been under podiatrist for a year and got no where with insoles. My chiropractor thinks otherwise so going to see foot specialist to gather all the facts. Dont the operations for neuroma make you lose feeling? If I didn't walk the dogs I think it may not be so bad! :scottie:
-
Gosh we seem to have an abundance of petite ladies .... and then a few of us giants :)
How many pairs of shoes does one woman need? As many as she can darned well get!
YES‼️
-
Bear in mind, shoes need to rest to breathe, or air, to ensure freshness.
So, we need as many pairs of shoes that it takes, to complement our garb AND assist in shoe freshness.
Ladies the number of shoes we NEED is rising rapidly!
-
I mainly buy Hotters.
The are really comfortable and come in varying width sizes. Win, Win :)
Plus they do really nice styles now.
-
I'm going through a Moda in Pelle phase just now. They're very nice.

Sadly not in AAs, otherwise I would hotfoot my way to the shops!
I have a friend who is obsessed by beautiful shoes. Every time I see her, it is a pleasure to inspect what she is wearing. One obsession I would love to share.

I've just checked their website JuJu and they must have read your mind ???
There is a new section called 'Slim Fit Shoes' :)

I have a wedding coming up and have no idea what I'm going to wear except it will be trousers as I don't do skirts or dresses!

::) how many snaps is that now Sparky? Have we actually got anything we differ on?
I buy Hotter shoes as they are the only ones that I can fit my custom made orthotics into as you can remove the insole. The fit, comfort and styles suit me well. they are not cheap so I do not have a huge array of shoes.
I have - winter lace ups, winter boots, trainers, summer push ons and kitten heels that I had for my daughter's wedding.
I also like M & S Footgloves and have a pair of their ankle boots, and a pair of Hawkshead walking boots for dog walking. that's all.
I have always worn size 5.5 and still wear size 5.5 :)

I shall have a look. Though often slim fit means C or even B fitting, but it would be wonderful if they are shelling AAs.

I have a halux valgus (bunion) and halux rigidus (stiffness and arthritis in the base of the big toe). My big toe leans towards the adjacent toe and overlaps so I use a toe spreader or the pressure causes the toenail to grow in.
I have heard that bunion surgery can be awful with no guarantees of success. My daughter's mother in law was in a wheelchair for months following hers. Needless to say I am not keen to go down that route.
Has anyone had successful bunion surgery?
