Title: External burning tissues in urethral area
Post by: Midnight Shadow on February 20, 2016, 06:41:40 PM
Having used the Vagifem now since Christmas I have found that the inner burning has settled down but I still sting and burn in the urethral area.  I am now trying the new vagisil product for external vaginal tissues. I saw a lovely lady doctor who said if I found anything I bought that suited me to carry on using it. She was very sympathetic. When examined I did have a slight infection that the prescribed Daktacort cream helped. She did say that unfortunately there is not a lot available on prescription but Vagifem is the best. Went to visit a cousin yesterday who has had similar issues and she recommended Black Cohosh and Wild Yam for Vaginal Atrophy. Now trying that, gosh costs a fortune, as most of you will probably know Having been on half term holiday this week and sitting less my under carriage issues have not been too bad. Was sitting a lot yesterday talking and today I am burning again. Decided that my theory about sitting certainly does aggravate the tissues down below. Has anyone else tried Wild Yam for Atrophy? Replies are much appreciated.

Hi I've just been reading about your VA, I think I might have it,  six weeks ago I caught a virus, on top of that I had cystitis first time in about 25 years, I am 56 now and not had a period for nearly 2 years, got antibiotics cleared it for about ten days then got another one, I've had three lots of antibiotics, water sample came back clear, but I still feel like I need to wee and have a burning feeling all of the time, to get to the point my friend told me to try Replen which I did this morning and what a difference it has made it has been so soothing, you might like to give it a try  :)

Hi margaret - were you given any advice as to how to lower your blood pressure or given a different type of HRT to try? I have friends who are on both HRT and blood pressure medication. The important thing is that your blood pressure is brought under control and then you are usually able to resume HRT. There are some comments here about it http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/forum/index.php'topic=21454.0

Hi everyone - I did a thread called " the Burning Club' on MM a couple of years ago so do try to find this.  Burning urethra is an ongoing problem for many of us. Forget any herbal or alternative remedies - a waste of money.  Long term use of local oestrogen will help but it tends to be a multi prong approach to manage this horrible burning.
The UTI type symptoms are often diagnosed as interstitial Cystitus - which I think is a general term for this burning pain which baffles most doctors -  the urologist I saw said he thought it was scarring following infection!!!???  There are some specialists that believe it is still an infection that is deep seated in the bladder and needs long term ABs - however when most women use local oestrogen this burning will reduce significantly within 3-6 month use and the oestrogen treatment will probably have to be continued for the rest of our lives!!!!.
Anyway, my advice is: local oestrogen 2-3 times a week and if possible systemic HRT alongside.
Avoid caffein, fruit juices, sugary or fizzy drinks and stick to herbal teas and water.  Make sure you drink enough and have a pee every 3 hours.
Never use anything scented around that area and have showers not baths.
It is vital that when you do a No2 you clean really well - bacteria from our bowels will easily make it's way into our vaginal area and this really causes irritation.  Keeping the flora balance of the vagina is important - when atrophy sets in during the peri and post meno stages then everything dries out in the vagina so this leaves the area open to infections like thrush or BV (which can aggravate the burning) and the treatments of these conditions can actually make things worse.  I use Multi Gyn Actigel every day (there are other products that also work e.g. Hyalofemme) and often a small dab of Sylk and this seems to sooth the whole area and stops BV and thrush from developing.  Tight trousers and anything that makes the intimate area hot and sweaty is also a problem - try to keep this area aired as much as possible and sitting down for too long is a no,no!!!!

Hope that helps.  Dg x

I find I get discomfort if I have too much sugar in my diet and if I don't drink enough.  I use Vagifem very successfully four times a week.  If I get discomfort and feel I need a wee when my bladder is not full I use Vagefem every night for a week and it soon eases. I also have estriol cream to use externally and this is very soothing and effective.

There is no reason why Vagifem can't be used internally and in addition oestrogen cream (0.01% ? ) be used on the external areas. Progesterone shouldn't be needed and as far as I am aware it wouldn't affect blood pressure.
