Title: Betablockers
Post by: Bettyboo on February 04, 2016, 12:49:38 PM
Hello Meno-friends

I'm a bit p*$$ed off today, as I had been doing quite well with the mindfulness meditating, health anxiety and peri issues, however today I feel in danger of a relapse. I suppose I will have to go back to Dr  >:(

I have been taking betablockers (40 propranolol in morning) for anxiety and palpitations since April 2013. I am troubled by raynauds-type symptoms - frozen/ white hands and feet - all the year, which is a known side-effect as the BB reduce heart rate (mine usually around 55). It is always worse in winter and because of this I wanted to come off the BB. After discussion with Dr I tried last November but after cutting down to 30 over several weeks I started getting panic attack feelings again so went back to normal dose.

Its cold here today and my hands and feet are frozen, even inside the house with the heating on. Coupled with this I've got joint and muscle pains all over the place, moving around - one minute left leg, next right rib, next left elbow, and that ant crawling on the skin sensation. I know the muscles in my shoulders/ back are bad again from the computer/ mouse, but the tingling and twitching is there too. Trying to breathe and stop catastrophizing but it's difficult!

Sorry to whinge/ rant - I know a few of you take betablockers - do you have any trouble with circulation and what do you do to deal with or avoid it?

Thanks

BB

I have taken beta blockers for many years and feel the cold a lot more. Living in Scotland does not help. All I have done is dress more warmly - permanent thermal vest from October to May(?), tights, socks, jeans, invested in a couple of cashmere jumpers, but normally dress in (three) layers. All the time!

I take Atenolol 50mg morning and 25mg at night and have never had a problem with the cold hands and feet.
Maybe I tolerate it well as pharmacist was surprised I got none of the side effects listed.

Wish I could tolerate the utrogestan I was prescribed....but no, got nearly every side effect listed :'(

My feet feel cold all the while but when Himself touches the skin, he tells me it's warm enough.  I was unaware that it can be a side-effect of a betablocka, which I have been taking since 2002.  I put my cold feet onto his back in the night and he tells me they are warm  ::).

Raynauds have a helpful web-site.  Do have a look-see for advice.  DH has this in one finger, strangely enough the same finger as his Dad suffered with: in that the hand gets cold, one finger goes white then 'comes back' …… when you exercise, do you feel warmer?  Layers of woollen clothing that you can add to and shed as necessary is important.  My coldest place is across the back of my shoulders so I have been known to sit with a blanket 'like a Granny' round my neck  ;D.

You need to sort out the seating position at your computer!!! and if the pain is bothersome take Nurofen.  It is known that as oestrogen levels drop the muscles become lax = aches and pains.  It's all about management as necessary.

Hi All

You're so right CKLD - I must pay more attention when I am sitting at the computer. I'm now on my fourth desk and this one is a sit/stand desk, so no excuses. I just don't o the standing bit enough or walk around. I get engrossed n what I am doing...

I feel a bit better today - feet and hands are warm, but I've got my M&S thermal vest on, so good advice there. And exercise, I don't do enough. Sorry, I was feeling sorry for myself yesterday. It's good to know you are all there.

 :thankyou:

BB

You are allowed to feel sorry for yourself, feeling cold can make me queasy, tired, irritated …….

Important to keep your eye on the posture.  I have to watch how I bend otherwise I get sciatica!
