When I saw my doctor recently about my anxiety she suggested some form of gentle regular exercise other than walking my dog who is getting elderly and not walking as much as we used to. She suggested swimming but I do not have a good technique so I contacted the local (small) swimming club.
To cut a long story short I started their aqua aerobics for the over 50s class 2 weeks ago and I really like it. It is very low impact but the water creates resistance giving a gentle workout without strain. It suits me very much and I look forward to it each week now.
What is your exercise of choice that you enjoy doing?
-
Hi BJ, so glad you have found something to help. I do yoga each week, I should really do it 'each day' but rarely do.. but enjoy my class each week.
-
I'm thinking of going back to aqua aerobics after Christmas. I used to enjoy it, going 2-3 times a week.
I prefer workouts in the pool.
-
You don't need to be able to swim Prajna. It's done in shallow water. Our pool is 4ft deep so water reaches up to my upper chest.
-
Gardening is my 'go to' exercise. Wandering around planning; walking round garden centres and then preparing the soil for planting.

I was going to say the same thing. The only downside could be that sometimes the movement of the water from the exercises can tip me off balance especially if I am on one leg and if you can't swim it could be a bit frightening but like cubagirl said, you are never out of your depth. Perhaps you could contact your local centre Prajna and ask the question :)

You could have a 'float' to hold onto or stay near the edge, many pools have a rail round to hold onto. I swam several times a week when in School as well as representing my School in County Champs ::) …….. my dream is to have a bungalow with a heated pool off the bedroom ;)

SPLASH ?

Oh exercise of choice? Lots! I love exercise!
I go to three classes per week - Piloxing (very strenuous work-out - cross between Pilates dance and boxing), Pilates and Zumba! I enjoy cycling in the summer ( but it's a bit too hilly round here), as well as gardening some of the year, and walking all the year round and on holidays have started going on walking holiday once a year. I do like swimming but can't be bothered to drive to the swimming pool and do all the changing and stuff as I still work part-time. I have to drive to the classes to but it's in for an hour, then out and drive home. If it's bad weather I sometimes do 50 star jumps in the sitting room.
I feel so much better and fitter than I have been for years and especially now I've lost a few pounds it makes it even easier :)

Do U shut your lounge curtains first ?
-
Hello babyjane.
I walk everywhere, usually two hours a day and I enjoy it. I always walk pretty fast and find myself racing other unsuspecting pedestrians.
I've done all sorts of exercise classes in my time and I recently considered taking up Tai Chi as it is calming, helps with balance and even old people can do it lol. There is an evening class near me but I'm worried about committing to anything while I still have unnerving hormonal surges.
I'm glad you are enjoying your classes and well done for taking the plunge ( as it were ).
Take care.
K.

I'm sure there will be tai chi lessons on UTube? I bought Himself a book years ago and there's probably a video.

Sorry Hurdity I had a wee bit of a giggle, especially when CLKD asked if you shut the curtains. Reminded me of house we once lived in. In the evening the sun shone in our lounge window & the house across from us into their dining room. Well one night we sat enjoying the evening sunshine in our lounge, across from us they had shut their lounge blinds as the wife would do yoga in the evening. However, unknown to them we saw all her shadow moves from across the road. Let's just say some didn't look much like yoga!!! ;D

There are only 5 ladies and me in my class so it is a good introduction to exercise for me. One of the ladies had a stroke which is why she started the class and now also does Pilates. After two or three months of the aqua aerobics I will see how I am and maybe try pilates too as my husband says it is good for strengthening your core.
Hurdity, star jumps, you are clearly fit with good stamina :gym:
-
:great:
-
Am I able to do star jumps from the settee ;)
-
Haha - CLKD no I don't shut the curtains. I live in a small village and there is the back wall of a low barn with no windows opposite me and the lane only has 5 more houses so hardly anyone walks by! From the settee? - only with your arms!
cubagirl - that sounds hilarious
Kathleen I can appreciate with hormones going up and down it's not so easy but I am post-menopausal and stable so I need to make sure I am fit as I'm in my 60's especially. You may find that even a small amount of exercise makes you feel better! Tai Chi always looks visually appealing but I wouldn;t have the patience to do the slow movements - which is why I've never donew yoga - not even for 5 mins!
babyjane - Pilates is wonderful - I do Fitness Pilates which I think involves more repetitions of movements than ordinary Pilates but I don't really know. It really is fantastic for building core strength and if you do it regularly is not quite so hard
Any form of swimming is really good because it's not weight-bearing and therefore great if you have joint/back problems or overweight as well as if you're not
You can tell I' m a bit evangelical about exercise :)

Hurdity it was hilarious. Of course told my brother & SIL when they visited us. So my cheeky brother sat in a chair, back to the window & lifted his legs up in all sorts of positions. We were on the floor in stitches! ;D
I did Pilate's for a while, but teacher was a dragon. Not conducive for relaxation. Haven't found another instructor near here.

Do they do armbands for adults? I've often thought about aqua aerobics but can't swim and hate getting water in my face, plus our new house is a long way from a pool
so my current exercise is walking the dog for around an hour most days, plus skating a few times a week - DH reckons it's done wonders for firming my lower half ;)
-
Is that ice or roller skating?
Most leisure centres have arm bands for sale or visit a sports shop. Getting the face wet is important, so that you don't jump when splashed. I spent a lot of time swimming underwater as a kid ::)
-
Ice skating, although did try inline skating a few times too, but only when it was TOTALLY flat and last time out I managed to fall and break my thumb :'( Ice is much softer than our front path!
-
:o ……. we used to skate when the rivers were frozen. Didn't dare try in-line skates, I was 40 when I considered them, however, the older I got the harder I fell ;D
-
We used to love skating on meadows next to frozen rivers (in N of England) - we could go for ages - fantastic fun and so safe because there was no water to fall into when the ice used to just crack sometimes - haven't done this for years. The tiny ice areas that come into some city centres at Christmas don't seem the same somehow but I would love to do it again (in the wild) but it is rarely frozen for long enough down here and there are no commercial ice rinks anywhere near. Great exercise though (until you fall over!).

I feel I've done my exercise reading about what everyone else does! ;D
GS was very impressed with me showing him how to do star jumps! So was I!
-
:o …….. star jumps ::)
There's a large ice arena in Brighton, it was busy when we walked by ……… they have set up a restaurant too so everyone can join in. Whether I would dare have a go these days ::)
-
When we were kids we used to skate down the street on the hard packed snow - it was quite a steep hill so hard work to get back home!
First time I went skating recently I had skates that didn't fit properly and I wore my thickest ski suit plus thermals. I was absolutely baking after a couple of circuits, but soon got the hang of things. I've since invested in skates that fit, which makes a big difference, and wear less ;)
-
My ankles always knock together when skating ::) - no such problems with swimming other than the need to shave my legs etc. >:( :-X
-
I never shave my legs, not even on swimming days ::)
-
Blonde then ;D - or do you have a kaftan on ;) - I have hairy toes too which would probably divert eyes from the knees and legs ;D
-
neither, I'm just not hung up about it. I don't have a great deal of leg hair, just a strip down each shin. It doesn't bother me so why would it bother anyone else?
-
It probably does but Good On U!
-
well I don't look round at the other ladies legs in the changing room ::)
-
I have a very large, thick towel to cover up with; a smaller 1 for drying my hair and another smaller one to dry legs and arms before leaping into clothing ;)
