Title: Toothbrush problems
Post by: CLKD on November 11, 2015, 06:31:45 PM
:-\  does anyone else find that brushing their teeth causes the gag reflex to kick in  :-\ .  I have always HATED paste etc. in my mouth but some mornings I heave for ages …………. difficult when in a camping cubicle  :-X I thought I would never stop this morning.  I never feel sick with it ………..

I have poor gag tolerance   :-\
For example I can't eat anything " furry " raspberries, peaches etc. Even velvet if touched can set me off sometimes !
Not to bad with teeth brushing but if I accidentally put the brush too far towards the back of my throat.............  :sick02:

Me too CLKD,

Sometimes it happens If I move the toothbrush too far back, sometimes just the act of putting the brush in my mouth makes me  :sick02:

Used to get it a lot when pregnant

Have you tried a really small brush. I was terrible when I was pregnant and that was the only thing that helped. I have an electric toothbrush with a small head and it doesn't cause any problems.
I have a great gag reflex. I can't  hold anything in my mouth such as a spoon or a pencil as I just heave, but a small headed brush solved the problem for me.

I won't have floss in the house - disgusting habit  >:(  :-X - and because my teeth are un-even I can't use an electric brush, it leaps out of my gob each time it hits a tooth  :o.  I have various sized brushes but it doesn't help …….. if the reflex hits it's there  :-\.  My belly is sore this morning after yesterday's experience.

Thanks for that tip Honeybun. I'm popping to supermarket later so will get one. Didn't think of that. Also, I get this if at the doctors with a sore throat and they use those stick things to hold your tongue down. I always warn the doctor first that there's a chance I could  :sick02:

CLKD I'm sorry to hear that you're tum is sore  :foryou:

I have always used a brush with a small head like the sensodyne ones.

Some of them that are on sale look like yard brooms!  I have no idea how you get those round your teeth. I had to use one once, and yes, I gagged.

This happens to me when I'm having a bad day, I don't find the toothbrush a problem but the very strong taste of the toothpaste, I have started using children's milder taste toothpaste in the mornings and normal adult toothpaste in the evening and so far it seems to work for me.

My worst experience was at the dentist a few years ago when I had to have an impression for a crown, I had this putty stuff in my mouth, it was horrible, the tears were rolling down my face  :'(
Now I don't wear mascara when I visit the dentist  ;D

I am so bad with this that right now as I am reading this I am gagging...often wake up gagging having dreamt that I was at the dentist having that nasty mirror shoved down on my tongue, so nasty!
Having said that I love my floss, need to floss daily, feel it is imperative for good dental hygiene, CLKD why would you say its disgusting?

Could you be tensing your tongue? I used to have horrible problems with having my teeth x-rayed and then, finally, one dentist adviced me to relax my tongue. That did a world of difference! I no longer gag :) !

Ours are kept in a bathroom cabinet. Changed every month and sterilised in boiling water with salt weekly.

We also use floss, much cleaner than a brush.

I get this and I find sitting down to clean my teeth helps as we usually lean over the sink. In my case leaning over makes the gag worse.

We have recently started using floss.  My gums have stopped bleeding but I have a very small mouth and find flossing tricky especially the back teeth which I don't always manage.  I haven't got room for the floss and my hand in my mouth  ???

I won't have floss in the house - disgusting habit

How is it disgusting?
It's used to get your teeth properly clean, the dirty floss is disposed of afterwards, you don't frame it  ;D

;D ……… spit dribbles  :-X  :sick02:

it really does, especially with the bottom teeth, but I don't like inflamed and bleeding gums so a bit of dribble can't hurt.  One day we could all be dribbling anyway  ::)

You'd probably dribble a lot more if/when your teeth fall out  ::)

And a little brush is less gross than a bit of floss that is disposed of rather than sitting festering.   ;D

I have a baby brush as well as those teepee brushes in varying sizes  ::)
Title: Re: Toothbrush problems
Post by: babyjane on November 18, 2015, 09:44:15 AM
I couldn't get the smallest teepee brush between my teeth as they have migrated and crowded and are too tightly packed.

I have receeding gums too and my worst displaced teeth have become very sensitive to the point it is sometimes difficult to eat on that side however the time has not yet come for any extractions  :'(

The mouthwashes and toothpastes for sensitive teeth are very good. Try rubbing a little toothpaste on before bed.

I found Sensodyne rubbed into the gum level eased painful nips.

I use sensodyne toothpase and their new toothbrushes which get round my tight wonky teeth nicely, and waxed floss - I can't get anything else between my teeth as they are very tight.

I also used hot water with a bit of salt dissolved in it as a mouthwash if my gums get sore - I get food lodged in certain places and if my gums get sore, they swell up and keep it there.  I used to have this problem with my wisdom teeth.  Once the swelling goes down, I can clean them properly.

The problem with the floss is cleaning the mirror afterwards  :-\

(Also, I have become very adept at dealing with the floss over the years - it takes a lot of practice to get to the point where it cleans efficiently but does not cheese-wire the gums)
