Title: Discharge
Post by: Claireylou on September 29, 2015, 12:30:19 PM
Hello ladies, could someone help please?

I'm 44 and I've been in perimeno pause for a good while.  My periods have been a little wonky for a while and last month I missed my first one, just had a tiny amount of light brown spotting instead. For the past few days I've had this watery clear discharge, I actually thought I'd wet myself at one point  :-\

There is no unusual soreness or itching with it but I just wondered if it's a normal thing to experience?

Thank you for reading xxx

Probably 'within normal limits'  ;) - how do you feel otherwise?

Hi CLKD

I'm not too bad in myself. Usual meno symptoms of insomnia, aches and pains etc etc.

This discharge isn't really heavy. Just enough for me to think ohhh is this normal ? Xxx

Our vaginas cleanse themselves usually, if you are worried, have an appt. with the Practice Nurse?  Any itchiness there and she can take a swab.  Do you require a 'towel' ………..

I get a discharge after sex  ;)

Hi CLKD,

I'm using a panty liner at the moment because it can leave my underwear a bit wet  :-\

Funnily enough, this discharge has been happening since DH and I did the deed a few days ago xx

So it could be the beginnings of atrophy maybe ?

What goes up has to  …………..  :-X

Atrophy is due to dryness 'up there' - for me it was like razor blades  :o

Ah ok, I see what you mean. It can't be that because DH uses withdrawal method(sorry tmi).

I Just feel a bit sore afterwards these days and then this pesky discharge starts up

Aaahhhh - your own lubrication or KYJ will seep too.  Maybe get your Practice Nurse to have a look-see  ;).

You're welcome .  The sooner one gets treatment for Atrophy the better - which reminds me, haven't heard from SuziQ lately -  ::)

I had a wet discharge before I started on vagifem.  It occasionally smelled fishy/dirty toilet.

Trouble was, I had just had vaginal surgery.  I had antibiotics, which helped, then thrush meds, which helped, then I tried leaving it and the discharge got blood stained and I couldn't sit comfortably so I had antibiotic cream.  All the swabs I had came back clear, so the doctor started me on the vagifem that the consultant had prescribed for dry bits.  That made a huge difference.  I have not found the vagifem enough, and usully have to double it up.

I stopped getting the discharge but kept getting thrush.  So I used multigyn actigel as well as the vagifem and that helped a lot. I have not found the vagifem enough, and usully have to double it up.

I have tried full hrt because of my aches.  It hasn't helped that, but since I went on to 2mg, the vaginal symtoms have gone for the first time in 3 years  :)

Thank you Dahliagirl

I've been out and bought some multigyn actigel this morning so hopefully it may ease a bit

It stings a bit at first, especially if on is thrushy  ;)  then it gets better.

I used to find the wet discharge used to drip like a tap sometimes, and I needed a towel.  I am not sure if it was because I was still healing from the surgery, or because of menopause.  One doctor I saw for a swab said ' oh we get all sorts of discharges at different times'  but no way was this normal.  The one that I saw last said 'oh - anything goes with menopause, you don't have to have flushes'.  I don't want to get into that state again.  The vagifem and actigel combination worked, although not as good as the femeston 2/10!  I am now worried the nurse at my new practice (I had to change and this is not such a big practice) will try and take me off them because I do not have flushes  - will have to  :-X

Hi Claireylou

Just a thought - have you tested the discharge to see if it is stretchy? I only say this because I went through a patch of this several times and thought it was an infection, but when I checked inside the mucus itself was stretchy like that you see at ovulation. It would be you are producing a lot of oestrogen at the moment as a result of a high FSH trying to stimulate ovulation. I have recommended this site before on Menopause Matters and it really has kept me sane

http://www.cemcor.ca/

Also this book Transitions Through the Perimenopausal Years: Demystifying Your Journey
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1412021529?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

You can actually produce higher than normal oestrogen at times before it finally falls and this may be your issue. Hard to say but worth a thought.

Hi Machair,

Just done the "stretch test"  :o and yes, it does seem to be a bit stretchy. Mostly watery (gosh sorry tmi) but a bit stretchy.

I missed a period last month so I wonder if it's connected?

Thank you again for more interesting links. I shall have a look see

Dahlia girl, thanks for the warning about stinging  :)

I'm really nervous as new to this forum (i introduced myself yesterday) but reading this post has made me realize another change in me. I don't know yet if I'm menopausal but my last period was 22nd Aug and I've had loads of discharge this last week or so. Not smelly just white no itch. Could this be linked to no period coming?

Hi mandypepe

You do sound very similar to me. My last period was at the beginning of August this year. Would've been due another period tomorrow but all I've had is this increase in white/clear/stretcy/watery mucus with no usual signs of a period. No sore boobs or pmt etc.

Welcome to the forum  :)

We have so much going on and nothing is taboo ;-)

This article may be of help. It mentions the stretchy mucus and its association with oestrogen.

Also this is a very helpful article which talks about stages in perimenopause. The book I mentioned goes into more details, and even says you may have to wear a light day pad to absorb excess mucus at times. Not saying that is what your discharge is but just something to be aware of.

I read through it last night but all still a little confusing for me but I think that's because I'm still getting to know the language

Hi mandypepe,

Yes it's all very confusing and trying to understand it all when you're not feeling great is hard work.

I think I've learnt more from this site than anywhere and it does help to know that even the more obscure or random symptoms are being experienced by others, though I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Keep reading xxx

I agree with you- this site is amazing and just so helpful to have support from each other.
I'm battling PMT again and it is stellar! Fully expecting another period but whether it comes or not is a different story!

Machair, my period was due today but absolutely no sign, apart from horrific pmt. I think i should go and lock myself in a cupboard for the day to save my poor family bearing the brunt  :-\

Mine was definitely wet and not the stretchy sort (I have also had the dried of version of stretchy, which is more like rubber bands).

Lavender oil is your friend - I like lavender oil and roman chamomile in the bath, although I find a shower perks me up better and washes the stress away, especially on fast  8)

Dahlia girl. I love the smell of lavender. Never thought of that one. I wonder where would be the best place to buy it

Our local chemist sells it.  Also H&B sell it. Chamomile is quite expensive but that is the same everywhere and you only need a couple of drops with a couple of drops of the lavender.  It smells odd, but you get to love it.  They are both gentle.

I got my original supplies from a member of my twins club who was setting up as an aromotherapist.  They can usually get bulk supplies and sell it on in little bottles to make ends meet.

Hi Claireylou... I've definitely experienced this same wetness after missing a period. I am 48 & in the past 12 months my cycles have extended out to anything from 35-48 days. I used to be 21-24 days.

The last time I experienced the 'wet' was in July.... It lasted 5 days & it was like clear watery period. It arrived when my period should have occurred if I was still on a 21 days cycle.

There was no hanky panky at the time to explain it away. I think it is fluctuating hormones.

It was really annoying, it required constant changing of pantyliners & I felt like every time I stood up I had to check I didn't leave a puddle on the seat!!!!  ;D

Hi Raenbo, thank you for the reassurance.

I hate wearing panty liners all the time, I get those little "gushes" too sometimes. I'm sure it's hormones because I'm 5 days late for a period and all I've got is this watery discharge. Last month I was late for a period and all I got was a tiny tiny brown discharge for a week instead.

It's like my body is trying desperately to have a period but just can't get going
