Title: Do you like your look.
Post by: honeybun on August 01, 2015, 04:23:26 PM
I've decided I don't.

I was in town this afternoon. I felt reasonably ok before but found myself looking around and ended up feeling a right mess.
I think the thing was there were a few trips in town today.....older ladies, and a few hen parties and a few in between. Not sure where I fitted in and it wasn't a good feeling.

How do you feel about the way you look and if not what would you change.

I'm considering what to change.....the list is long  ::)

Me neither.  It's a sore subject with me.  When I'm anxious I can't eat so I've lost too much weight.  Plus my hair is starting to turn gray, and my skin has lost all it's plumpness and elasticity.  It's gotten to where I avoid mirrors as much as possible.

Sorry to be a downer...

Oh I know how you feel.

I want to look different but not sure how...or how much it would cost to get it right.

Not mutton dressed as lamb...but  :-\

How about a personal buyer in a store?  Someone who knows nowt about you, can look you over and decide what suits?

I had a Very Good Look at my hair yesterday and apart from the length I'm not worried about the colour: dark with grey, would pay a lot for that effect if I went to the hairdresser  ;)

My belly has sagged ……. and I hate looking in the mirror and seeing Mum looking back  :-\ : I want to be ME!  ::) and I hate looking in a shop window and wondering who 'that' woman is and why do I think I recognise her  :-X

Would I change much: nope.  Apart from getting rid of the anxiety!!!! wish that my hairy legs would stop growing once I've put the shaver over them and would like to get rid of any hair on my face!

I don't wear make up so don't spend much time looking in the mirror  ;)

no I don't but it is me, it is how I look and to change it would not be me.  I try to make the best of what I have and I really like my hair when it is in good condition (which is when I am in good condition).

I don't like my belly overhang but short of cutting it off there is not much I can do about it.  I don't like my uneven bite and wonky teeth but haven't got £4,000 to have them straightened nor would I at my age they should have been done years ago.

My style is middle aged but then I am middle aged so it would be silly to try and be something I am not.  I don't wear make up because I am oversensitive to products but I do scrub up ok for a wedding or occasion and I have a few really nice outfits.

When I feel ill I dress like a bag lady and don't go out of the house, but always make an effort when going into town but not when walking the dog in the woods.

Whew, that's me I think  :veil:

:thankyou:  I have gardening clothes, into town clothes, going out for a meal clothes ……. and when I feel well and not anxious I can be bothered to get changed ………. it also depends on who we are meeting, then I get a feeling of 'I ought to make the effort for DH' but fortunately, he rarely notices  ;)

I don't like anything, there is so much I would like to change  :( (http://:() I would love to be happy with myself, but I am very self critical. Not sure why I have no confidence with me. People who are comfortable in their bodies are very lucky.

Mostly I think I'me OK with the way I look.  :-\
APART - from when I skulk out of the house in very scruffy jeans (grubby / paint stained)
Thankfully it doesn't happen often, well not more than twice a week  ::)

I've actually never cared how I look as long as I am clean and clothed suitable to the weather. What has made me incredibly unhappy and angry is how what other people want of me has made me feel about the way I look. I am now paranoid about all my lumps and bumps and loathe my physical image simply because of everyone around me wanting me to lose weight/ dress a certain way/ fit in etc etc. I feel like i now have to spend the rest of my life unlearning all this guilt and loathing which has fallen on me from other people; learning not to give a flying f*ck about what other people think is the hardest lesson I am having to learn on this turn of the wheel :/

Maybe I'm feeling this way because I feel my hubby has become disinterested in me as a woman. He does look at other women....I see him do it ....but not me. Nearly 31 years on he has seen all there is to see but it does absolutely nothing for my self confidence. It makes me doubt me....and doubt him, although we have been through so much together. No spark anymore and it makes me sad. I accept a lot of the blame....but I miss what we had .

I like my eyes. They're my best feature and for as long as I possibly can, I will wear contacts in favour of specs, because I do not want frames on my face in public.  (I know........... ::))

I sort-of like my hair, although with grey bits coming in, I need to keep getting it coloured back to its natural shade, dark-ish brown.  My hairstyle is layered and not exactly up-to-the-minute but it looks right on me and frames my face fairly well.

I've never liked my legs, as they're wide at the calf and like the rest of me, they're too short. My grandfather once told me I'd got "perfect legs" and a man behind me once said "Look at those legs!" - you could have knocked me down with a feather on each occasion!  My aunt described my legs as "shapely", which when I'm wearing heels, is probably a more accurate description.  Och, they're not too bad, I suppose......

I have to say, I do like my clothes style, because I stick to what suits me best, whatever anybody else is wearing.  BUT.....daughter is always on at me to wear at least some make-up, because just now, I don't wear any, ever!

It's for me though and no one else. Just a bit of foundation, lippy and mascara.

  HB.    What's your best feature?  Why not wear something that will flatter that, to start with?    Or, what colour is "just you"?  Could you get yourself something in just that shade?  And do either or both of these for you!   If you are happy with the result, it'll show on your face and Hubby might just notice!  Good luck  :foryou:

I don't wear any make up,never have,think it's because I didn't have any sisters who did  :-\
I wear what I'm comfy in but if it's a special occasion Iam always smartly attired. I don't think I have any special physical features very plain in fact but I'm happy with who Iam and those that don't like it well thats tough ! I do colour my hair as it's very grey and have had a really nice hair style but if the chips were down you would do no better than to have me watching your back and that is worth more than any make up,clothes and body shape ! Come on ladies we are special, caring people anyone should be glad to know us  ;)

Only makeup I wear is eyeliner and mascara.  Or just mascara.

My hair I now dye funky colours just to make it different, I seem to have lost my clothes style no idea where it's gone to and at times I do feel not right no idea why.  I do love though having my nails done, like the nail art stuff

If I could change anything, I would change my feet and boobs, but not because they look awful, but because they are difficult to fit and consequently expensive, with less choice. Oh and hair that behaved itself! But no grey hairs yet (well between you and me, some downstairs!) and still blonde.

I'm 61 and look a lot younger and am a better shape than since my early teens, so that clothes do look better. DH does compliment me on the way I look, which helps my confidence. I don't worry about the way I look as much as when I was younger. I look at old photos and wonder what I was fussing about.

I look at other people and find I am attracted to who people are rather than what they look like. The beauty within shines through.

I do wear makeup when I go out as apparently I don't look very well without it, regardless of how I really am! I am naturally very pale.

Yes & no. Depends on my mood, my hair, what I've put on.

Scared of looking like some old biddy & try to absorb some trends into my wardrobe. This year I've added more colour as had wardrobe full of navy & black. However, not sure it's really me. Some things I do not wear well, but refuse to send for recycling yet.

I think I look like a bag lady most days! so I'm not exactly overly proud of how I look, but at least shop assistants leave me alone (they assume I can't afford anything  :-X).
I have some really lovely clothes but very few opportunities to wear them these days and I've never been particularly good at putting on make-up so attempts usually result in the scared panda look. As for my hair, the least sign of humidity and I scare small children....
but no matter how bad I look OH tells me I look beautiful to him, and apart from the disastrous trip to the hairdressers none of my friends have called Trinny & Susannah  ;)  I do keep telling OH that he needs to tell me when I look bad so I don't embarrass us!!

Don't go out of the house without make-up.
Buy new clothes on a regular basis.
Wear nail polish on work days.
Haircut every 6 weeks.
Use self tan every week.
What a trooper.  ::)

I'd love to get rid of my specs and have teeth straightened but don't want the pain of braces.  Clothes have to be comfy otherwise I feel self conscious so these days due to shape shifting as HB would say anything with a bit of give around the tum area. Oh and comfy shoes due to stupid foot problems.

now it is official sparkle, you really are my doppelganger  ;D

Has anyone got any ideas on how to not look frumpy? That's all I see in the mirror now, doesn't matter what I'm wearing.

I'd love to have my nice trim waist back, and I'd like skin that never sags!
Title: Re: Do you like your look.
Post by: babyjane on August 02, 2015, 01:49:59 PM
i think we have to get to a point of accepting that we are middle aged and make the very best of what we have.  there is no shame in being this age and at this stage of our lives.

Tabbycat, the official definition of frumpy is 'dowdy and old fashioned' and I am sure you aren't that.  You don't have to be frumpy but you can't change your age back to 35, it isn't possible. For me, I prefer to feel comfortable in my skin than look like my daughter's sister and my grandchildren like my squidgy bits  ::)

I don't have a lot of money for clothes etc but what I do buy I don't choose dowdy or frumpy.  Approaching 60, short and a bit rounded does not mean I have to be frumpy and dowdy.  I mean I can be on a bad day but it doesn't take much to vamp it up a bit  :veil:  :)

I don't mind my top half too much it's my bottom half that needs attention. I'm having trouble getting trousers to fit. If I don't wear a belt they fall down. I want to get more fashionable jeans that actually flatter my shape. It's not so bad in the winter because I wear boots but sandals and me don't look right.
Am I too old for skinny type jeans or should I stick to boot cut.

I have just ordered a really nice pair of boots for winter. They are tan in colour and now I'm wondering if I should have gone for black. I just wanted something different.
That's another problem....I never seem to be able to make up my mind about anything clothes related.....I dither.

I am totally un-aware of what the different types of jeans are: what for goodness sake is a boyfriend jean?  :-\ ……. jeans are jeans are jeans - which can be shrunk, either by running into the sea in them or by laying in a warm bath  :D

As for colour, you have the boots: now working upwards, buy clothes in shades the match, i.e. cream long length skirt, bright peach coloured top and cream jacket?  Think Gok  ;)

Jeans look much better with tan boots than black HB. Why don't you try 'Slim' jeans, they are in between skinny and boot cut.

Post by: honeybun on August 02, 2015, 03:26:37 PM
Thanks for the reassurance about the boot colour. I thought they might look good but then started to dither after I ordered them  ::)
Yes I could try slim ones, might improve things and smarten me up a bit.

Now where should I go as I don't want to spend silly money on jeans. My son spends a fortune on his and they don't look that much different to be honest.

Matalan? Next? M&S ……… I need lots of time and a cold day before I can face any changing rooms these days  ::) but we live too far away to be bothered buying to bring home and take back should the item not fit! which of course, adds to the cost.

I get them from Next (£20) and M&S (can't remember if they are £15 or £25). Also had them from Sainsburys.
I normally buy a size 10, in Matalan I would need to get a 12. (So that won't be happening  ::)).

That's strange - in Matalan I need an 8 and not a 10 whereas, in Sainsburys, I need a 12 and not a 10!

It does depend on the psychology of the company management  ;) - clothes are labelled a size 10 but are sometimes a 12  ::) so it is essential to face the fitting room!

I weigh a stone more than when I was younger - 9st 12 as opposed to 8st 12. I used to be a size 12 top and a 14 bottom but now I am a 10 top and a 12 bottom.  Clothing companies are definitely sizing clothes larger to make us feel better because on the whole we are larger.  I would have been a size 16 30 years ago.

Unflattering lines are usually the cause of frumpiness, I think.  Clothes do not have to be straight up and down, even at our age - we've all got an outline, for goodness sake!  And I think that calf-length-anything (trousers included) can look frumpy, especially with flat shoes - unless of course you've got the height and legs for it.    I haven't got either, so I don't wear calf-length-anything, ever.   I also wish older women wouldn't resort to wearing calf-length pleated skirts, either.  I've made a pact with myself that I will never go down that line and that my skirt/dress length will always be a flattering one for me.        :veil:

However, we're all different.
On or just below the knee skirts look truly awful on me.

That's a good point. I do tend to wear baggier tops than I used to because my belly is bigger now.

I can't wear heels though, even small ones - although I'm 5ft 8" so I don't need the height.
Title: Re: Do you like your look.
Post by: honeybun on August 02, 2015, 06:34:58 PM
I always wear heels as I'm short. I need the extra height to make me look and feel better. I was 8st 2 for about twenty years and now I'm 8 10. All that extra weight is on my tummy.
I can wear skirts, don't even own one. I don't know what to do with my top when I wear a skirt. Can't tuck it in as my tummy looks fat, can't leave it out because it just makes me look short. I'm ok in a dress, the lines are cleaner and it looks better.

It's a mine field really. I just want to feel smart which I fail to do on a regular basis.

" Do you like your look" ?
Crikey!! how long have you got?

Quite a few people say that I don't look my age (53) so guess that's kind of good... BUT I hate my flabby bits & even tho I walk and exercise and eat healthy I still have flabby bits ... Always hated my nose - my hair is ok but needs colouring every 4 weeks now, cos the grey starts to come thru ..Oh and then there are the other hairs- like ones that spring up under the chin & are black, whats that all about? No one warns us they we are in danger of turning into bearded ladies and tweezers are suddenly our best friend ..Even my eyebrows are turning grey & Its becoming more expensive and high maintenance - what with regular hair and eyebrow colouring ( I refuse to go grey gracefully) ..My boobs are going south & I swear if they start to touch my waist I want euthanasia ... Actually I have just reread this and realised, maybe its why my ex went off with a younger female ... :-\... But just wait till she hits her meno and he has to go thru it all again  ;D

My best feature I think is my hair so I like to keep it looking good,as they say, it's your crowning glory.
Don't like my upper arms so tend to wear 3/4 sleeve tops to hide them.
M&S have a nice range,plain or patterned.
I don't like my middle and keep trying to pull it in.  Use to have 22" waist in my teens but have got to remember I've had 3 kids, menopausal & in my 50's. That's what my friend keeps telling me.

Honeybun- went into Matalan yesterday with DD as she wanted some Jeans. Nothing suitable for her but she picked a pair out for me,slim leg,and they fitted perfectly. £10 a pair and the denim is really soft. I bought a dark denim and a slightly lighter pair.

Definitely adding more colour to wardrobe as I promised myself. As for my hair, it's badly needing chopped. Sea breeze certainly hasn't helped today!  ;D

Hey there ladies

Only me!!!! popping in to say Hi.

Also it isn't called the change for nowt. We are all stunning ladies and have many qualities within our selves. Accept all the compliments you get, change only if you want too, new hair cut, clothes, lose withe etc etc, but do it for you. Solution focused.......decide, plan, action, results are what we want and we are the oNLY ones holding the key to that change.

For me , I have long, long legs, blonde now not brown, well grey actually but dyed blonde and looks so natural. I have to wear specs but I think of them as SEXY lol.

Go get um ladies and be yourselves

I'm with Cubagirl, I bought a pile of new gypsy type tops and some 'fitted' jeans to make me look/feel better.  All from ebay, or local lifeboat charity.  My hair went grey many moons ago and is now a very natural looking purple, I used to wear purple a lot but now I am going for red, also got new colour lipstick to go with the look.

Maybe I am lucky in that way, as I really do not care what others think, I just want to feel better.. so I go brighter.

Hoping the new exercises might do a bit of 'toning' too but if they dont they dont.

Not to mention the bright pink wellies for my day job I mentioned earlier - they help too.  They are very very pink :)

I love bright wellies. I have pink with blue polka dots.

I got a hair cut today and don't look quite so much as if I have been in a wind tunnel  ;D

I don't care much what other people think either. Maybe that's a getting older thing.
My daughter keeps me in line anyway. She is a very opinionated young lady  ::)

Did anyone notice your hair cut HB? Hubby never comments on mine, yet I'm expected to comment on his. My main comment just now is "When are you getting a haircut?"  ;D

I care enough about my look to ask hubby, only sometimes mind you! If he really hates something he tells me, likewise if he thinks I look really nice. Neither happen often these days, so I just suit myself.

Been looking online at possible MOG outfits for  son's wedding. Hubby has expensive taste!  ;D

Well when I got home I had to ask this time...but he was excused today.

The normal is ....I walk in and he puts his hands on my shoulders and twirls me round to look and then bless him he always says it looks nice.  ;D

If hubby has expensive tastes...the go with it. If you say the words...no dear that's too expensive ....well you get my drift

Title: Re: Do you like your look.
Post by: honeybun on August 15, 2015, 09:36:25 AM
Would this be it.

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me,
And I shall spend my pension
on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals,
and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired,
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells,
And run my stick along the public railings,
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens,
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat,
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go,
Or only bread and pickle for a week,
And hoard pens and pencils and beer mats
and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry,
And pay our rent and not swear in the street,
And set a good example for the children.
We will have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practise a little now?
So people who know me
are not too shocked and surprised,
When suddenly I am old
and start to wear purple!

Love that poem

It's a really good idea to get a colour in a shade that works on you.  There can be so many shades of a colour, it's worthwhile trying this.  If you just hold the fabric up underneath your chin and it makes you "glow" , it's a good shade for you.   Works with red, purple, grey, whatever.....................

Most of my clothes are navy and white - it's the same as you, babyjane - I like them and they suit me.   But maybe I've got just a bit too much navy and white!  I know daughter thinks so.  Anyway, this summer, I've added  pair of yellow trousers (yes, trousers!!) and a coral jacket to my wardrobe.   They certainly do make me feel more colourful and they're in shades that suit me.   I'm ashamed to say I'm back into my navy and white just now, but I'll be wearing my coral jacket tonight.  Promise!

Silvery grey suits me, but anything darker & colour drains from my face. A nice coral suits me best, although I've bought yellow this year. A nice yellow, not bright lemon. I used to suit lemon, but have had to soften it over the years. A nice grey can be accessorised with so many colours.

That is a worry BJ, let us know how you get on.

I love the 'when I am old I will wear purple' rhyme, that is why I used to wear it, never realised I could wear red and purple :)

Today I have a white top with coloured birds and sparkle beads on, with black jeans.  I used to save such tops for going out, I dont go 'out' so now I try to look nice every day.. I do this for me, as DH wouldnt notice if I had a bin sack on.

Forgot to mention my hats for winter, now they are a talking point ;)

SadLynda you remind me of mum's generation when they had clothes for 'best' which might be worn once or twice a year.  Linens that only came out for special occasions, tray cloths for visitors etc.  Such a shame.  It was all in pristine condition when we cleared out her house.  How nice it would have been for her to use it more often for herself

I remember when we bought our first house in 1979 we papered our new bathroom in pink and orange and it looked really fresh and pretty.  When my parents visited my father pronounced it 'ghastly' and for ages I felt the burden of his disapproval (again)  :'(

Awww BJ - I know that feeling

I have checky shirts too, that was what I wore 'before' my purge on gypsy tops etc.  I had 'best' bra's too, never got worn and I seem to change sizes that often they never did.  So I wear all my nice bra's too.  In winter I wear perfume every day too, not in summer due to insect allergy so my 'scent of choice' is Avon SSS to deter the biting types.  Never really keen on so much make up, so wear tinted moisturiser.

We hoard.  Feelings, belongings opinions + the best of ourselves.  We “save it” for a better day. For an event that's more important so it won't “wasted.”

Yet, sometimes “later” becomes “never.” And never can suffocate.

The “good” china, dress or jewelry is left behind to dull + collect dust. Unused, unworn + subsequently unloved.

We squirrel away our opinions (+ hearts) for a more appropriate audience, until we know more, or the perfect moment. We fear if we spend what we have now we'll use it up and be left empty handed.

We're wrong.

Sometimes opportunities and people go away and never come back. Don't miss out.

Choose instead to inhabit the fullness of every moment. Each second of your life comes filled to the brim with possibility.

Trust that there will be more where that came from, dear one. Use your best stuff now. In fact, give it away.

Don't think about what you'll get in return. Don't think about running out. Just give it away.

It is by spending oneself that one becomes rich. – Sarah Bernhardt

We were on holiday up north last month.  One afternoon we were browsing round the shops there, some of which were very nice.  We went in to a few of them and then we went into a branch of a chain that we have a couple of in our own neck of the woods.   I went to look at the coats and jackets, not that I was particularly hunting for any of these.  But I saw a jacket that I just had to try on and then I saw another that I also had to try on.  Everything about both jackets was right, so Hubby persuaded me (and not the other way round, would you believe!) to get them both.   And I'm glad I did because they're already both getting plenty of wear, so they really were value for money (and came out at under £100)    :)

Downloaded holiday photos. OMG could hubby have taken worse photo of me. Took from waist up as trying to include background & all I can see are my  :boobs: Wonder if I could airbrush them?  ;)

no thank you I don't like them and neither do my nails.  I don't even wear polish as my nails dry out too much and crack.

I tried a silk repair for a split nail and it wrecked the nail altogether until it grew out (still split).

thanks for the suggestion though xx

I don't like them either as they wreck my nails, but for son's wedding next year I will get gels done. Some people are fine with them. Friend used to get hers done every 3 weeks. When she eventually stopped,  her nails looked pretty good, considering the number of years she'd been getting them done for.
