Just wondering am I the oldest lady on here still having periods, and not on HRT? I was 55 last March and although my last period was December I can tell I am going to have another any day soon. Also if anyone is older than me did you go to the GP for advice or think it was normal?

That's the thing about meno.....there are no hard and fast rules about anything.
I'm sure someone else in your position will be along soon.

Hello Mahair.
My last period was in September 2010 when I was 54 and until that time they were regular and heavy and a lady I know had hers resume at 57 after a long break.
I think there are as many types of meno as there are trees and women like us are just at the higher end of the age range.
I certainly didn't worry about meno when I was having periods and I don't think you have anything to be concerned about.
Wishing you well and take care.

My friend is still having regular periods and is 57 and her sister was the same x

My mother was 57/58 when her periods stopped :o She didn't get any hot flushes but mentally she was in a very bad way for about 3 years.
Mine stopped when I was 51 so not always like mother like daughter!

Hi Machair, No you are not the oldest! I was still having regular and heavy periods at 55 but these stopped when I was put on the mini pill-at the time given as birth control as I was in a new relationship and was told by my G.P that pregnancy was still a remote possibility!!
The pill actually stopped my periods and 6 months later I went on to hrt which gave me a monthly bleed. After a year my GP changed this to conti hrt, but I still had breakthrough bleeding from time to time so not sure when periods actually stopped completely..I'd estimate 57ish. So you may have a way to go yet!

My Mum's friend went through the menopause at 53 and didn't have another period until 20 years later when they suddenly resumed. She is still having regular periods 5 years later. She's been fully checked out and all is fine. She is embarrassed to buy sanitary towels and pretends they're for her granddaughter.

What would cause cessation and after many years the re-start of periods?

I have no idea. Her GP was surprised but gave her a full MOT and there was nothing wrong.
