Title: Smoothie maker
Post by: bramble on July 13, 2015, 12:53:10 PM
I am thinking of buying a smoothie maker - a Nutribullet no less. Anyone got one, do you use it and would you recommend it? I thought it would be good to get me to eat more fruit and veg......

I have one and love it.  :) I make myself smoothies at lunch time a lot, using whatever I have in, rather than following recipes. Today I had a handful of spinach, 1/2 an advocado, 1/2 a banana and 1/2 an apple. It was lovely, but I had to share it with my 2 year old grandson! Sometimes I add aloe Vera liquid to it. I tend to add more liquid now, so not too thick. And yes, I do eat more veg and fruit as a result. I'm not keen on fruit normally. Some of the concoctions I have made do look disgusting though. Mix blueberries and spinach together and..... :-\ .! Tastes good though. My DH won't try it though. Have fun!

Agree totally with Ju Ju.....have had mine six months and used it nearly every day.....DH loves it too......I use spinich or kale and then add fruits and nuts.. I feel my hair and and nails are improving too......and honestly you cannot taste the veg, so I get my five a day, every day.
Wouldn't be without mine, worth every penny  :great:

It does mean of course that I will have to shop every week for fresh fruit and veg. Normally just shop every 2-3 weeks..... Note to self - new routines are not always a bad thing.

My daughter has a cheap and cheerful one that works just fine.

She uses a lot of frozen fruits. Mixed berries, raspberries and strawberries. Ice cubes also play a huge part. Depending on what she makes she also uses Greek yogurt. Some are so thick a spoon comes in handy. She looks on line for ideas and makes green smoothies too. I can't have too much due to IBS but I have a small glass.

You don't have to spend a lot of money buying a smoothie maker as everything gets smooshed together and nothing needs straining.

I love that word - smooshed.  Does it take out the pips and skin and bits unlike a blender?

No that's the point...you stick it all in...smoosh it all together and drink. No goodness lost.

Well that's the way she does it and they taste wonderful. The thing that amazed me is the fact you dont loose the individual tastes of all the fruits. Her boyfriend bought it for her just to see if she would use it and like it. Yes to both. As I said she uses a bit of frozen fruit as it can get very expensive. You need a lot of fruit to make a half decent amount.
Oh and apple juice is the best mixer....Orange is too acidic.

I just bought a blender that has a pulse action on it as well to crush the ice £15 off of a well known auction site  ;)
No way was I parting with best part of £100 for a nutri bullet ! It still came with two containers and sealable lids ,knew we probably wouldn't use it for long and unfortunately we didn't. But look out for the supermarket doing offers on their frozen fruit and frozen yogurt makes nice shakes on hot days.

So, couldn't you just use a blender? The nutribullit is quite expensive. Not sure what the difference is?  :-\

The one my daughter has has a tap at the bottom but apart from that it's a blender. She rarely uses the tap and just pours it out from the top.

She is a student and doesn't have a lot of money but has used this thing for over a year and it works fine. Not sure what the very expensive ones do differently because a juicer strains but a smoothie maker smooshes up the fruit and then you drink it...pips and all.

Kale  :beaurk:: spinach  :beaurk: I couldn't face anything that doesn't look proper, anything too green or grey  :-X

Frozen veg/fruit is as healthy as fresh so buying any end-of-day fruits etc. and putting them into the fridge means there's enough for Autumn/Winter smoothies too.

My six year old Grandson is typical in not eating his greens. I was having my drink one day made with Kale and fruit, and he said  'Yuck I don't want a taste'.......I told him him it was Monster juice and would make him strong......and yes he not only drank it, but liked it.  So the colour that the drink turns out doesn't matter as long as it's doing you good....A big bag of Kale or Spinich is about £1.......

Well, I have bitten the bullet as it were and ordered one. I shall let you know how I get on. In the meantime, I shall start a smoothie recipe thread.

Do you have to cook the kale and other veg first or just use it from raw?
