Hi Ladies,
I've been having trouble with my back for over a year now, to cut a long story short the doctor sent me for a back and pelvic x-ray which showed I have a degeneration in the Vertebra discs L1 to L5 and a thining of the bone, I have to go for another test which measures bone density. Now in the past week I've developed terrible pain in the knee on the other leg it feels like the muscle is tight at the back and front of my knee when I walk, do you think I should take some vitamin D. I do a yoga class every week which I think helps a lot.

Hi margaret
Sorry to hear about this but glad everything is being investigated. I presume you have been through menopause - if so how old were you and how old are you now, and have you taken HRT at all? If you are less than 10 years since menopause and under 60 it may yet be possible to help prevent further deterioration of your bones by starting HRT. I'm sorry I don't know much about this issue but I hope also that some treatement is possible so that you don't suffer too much more pain.
Re Vit D - well this will help if you are deficient but if you have a good diet, plenty of calcium rich food, sunshine and exercise you shouldn't be deficient at this time of year. Weight bearing exercise is good if not too painful - eg walking. Great re the yogao - I do Fitness Pilates which strengthens the core body too
There is a lot of information about oesteoporosis on this site:

There are several sub menus (top menu) under "Health" "Osteo" ie diagnosis, treatments etc etc
There is also some info about HRT and osteo here:

and diet and vitamin requirements here:

Also the National Osteoporosis Society has lots of info as does NHS and patient.co.uk
Hope this helps.
