Title: Stiffness (not quite as oo-er as it sounds)
Post by: ancient runner on July 13, 2015, 11:38:04 AM
If I sit for a bit, when I get up my muscles are almost frozen and painful for the first few steps then mostly I am fine. Getting out of bed for a wee in the middle of the night - same problem. I run and am very active. Is this a peri/meno thing, anyone? It's come on quite suddenly and is driving me mad.
last period about 5 or 6 weeks ago (not much of one), main symptom otherwise is VA. Using Estring for that at present.
Thanks ladies!

Me too, an ageing thing? HOw do we not appreciate our bodies when we are young, its my hips that dont seem to work in middle of night or my feet - a superb down topper on mattress did help quite a bit but its too hot in summer for it,  :P

Ageing doesn't come easy. From my toes to my neck I creak, but mainly my legs & feet. Wish there was a solution. WD40?  ;D

The Monster Walk? I like that.
Anyone know if it's an oestrogen thing?

I feel it is as I'm fine while on full HRT but once I stop it then I get the stiffness in the legs and ankles and definitely end up "monster walking" for those first few steps after getting out of bed!

Me too! I had never thought of it like that but when I first get up and walk down the stairs in the morning (after my pint of tea  :) ) I walk in a really weird way - no-one ever sees me - I  think it's my ankles but haven't stopped to think - I just can't walk properly for the first few steps! I sort of walk from side to side without putting weight on my ankles (I think!). I don't notice in the middle of the night as I feel my way round the bed with my eyes shut!

That's exactly it - ankles don't move properly. Has appeared out of nowhere in the past month or so.

It's when you get to the loo first thing in the morning and you struggle to sit down because you are so stiff.  :o

Is it meno....I really doubt it...I just think it's an ageing thing. Mind you if I'm like this at 54 what on earth will I be like in ten years time  :o

Neck, hips and back for me :-(

If I've walked a fair bit I can hardly move the next day

My mum was running round like a teenager still at 72 after no hrt ever bless her

I'm naturally stiff as a board but I do find stretching at night really helps and eases morning stiffness :)

I might try that Sunnydays - though I do stretch when I run and it doesn't seem to help much.

Ageing, menopause - where's the difference?  I think we sit around a lot more than our ancestors were able to do, i.e. they walked/cycled miles as they had no access to transport.  Now we all have cars …… once Mum got over her frozen shoulders during her meno years, 1 arm remains stiff with very little upward movement, she walks miles each week.  She gardens.  Sits about.

So far I haven't joint problems though I do have mobility problems if I've sat for a while, need to get brain in gear first  ::)

I think my wondering about it being a hormonal thing rather than ageing is that 1) this came on practically overnight and 2) I am VERY active - walk everywhere. Don't sit much. Very rarely drive anywhere. And if it is, then if the balance tips towards full HRT for other reasons then maybe I can look forward to not doing the Monster Walk.  ;D

I think the stiffness is simply about our joints wearing out and the menopause with ever decreasing oestrogen just makes this worse. If you have engaged in a lot of exercise that puts a particular strain on certain joints then inevitably those will be the first to give troubles.  Joggers will often have problems with feet, knees and hips.  As an ex dancer, I've got real problems with my hips, feet and back. I just do brisk walking these days to keep myself moving. I simply can't sit down for any length of time now as I seize up. When I get up in the night for a pee my feet simply won't work. DG x

My joints are in great shape....I have the X-rays to prove it (from checking out the foot/ankle symptoms).

HOWEVER, my feet/ankles hurt every morning and when I get up after sitting a while.  I did not have this when just taking vagifem, but I did have bladder/urethral pain that wouldn't remit.  Once I started on HRT, the feet/ankles began to hurt but no swelling though.  I think it is related to hormone replacement for me.  I took a hormone HRT off holiday and it went away, but bladder pain came back!..... so I went back on the HRT to make my life livable again.

The feet/ankle thing is annoying, but it is nothing compared to constant burning bladder/urethra and urge to go. That is just miserable.
It truly is a trade-off....nothing seems to fix everything in menopause.
