Hi ladies
Hubby is having a colonoscopy on Wed and I have just been reading the instructions for meds etc for the previous 3 days. I did not realise that it was so complicated. I am ok with most of it except On the Tuesday he cannot eat any solid food. Can anyone recommend suitable foods so he doesn't starve! They give a list of what he can have but I cant think how or what to prepare
Also, milk is banned, would this include soya milk?
Any guidance or suggestions would be appreciated

Hello Purplenanny. When I had mine I got some Lucozade which really helped with the feeling weak and empty. I also had sugar free jelly. Clear vegetable broth was also fine as was Bovril in hot water. Also clear fruit ice lollies and boiled sweets to suck like barley sugar.
Hope that helps a bit. Good luck for him, it will soon be over.

I found this PN
Water
Tea and black coffee without any milk, cream, or lightener
Flavored water without red or purple dye
Clear, light colored juices such as apple, white grape, lemonade without pulp, and white cranberry
Clear broth including chicken, beef, or vegetable
Soda
Sports drinks such as Gatorade and Propel (light colors only)
Popsicles without fruit or cream; no red or purple dye
Jello-O or other gelatin without fruit; no red or purple dye
Boost Breeze Tropical Juice drink
Seems as if hubby might be a bit hungry
Hope it goes well for him.

what's wrong with red or purple? I don't remember that from my time?

I've not had a Colonoscopy but I have had a procedure similar to angioplasty. The consultant doing the procedure was very keen on light coloured fluids prior to the procedure (lots of them). Apparently dark fluids show up when scans are being done, making the contrast medium used during the scan less effective.

I would think soya milk would be banned, but the best thing to do is ring the hospital and ask them.
OH had a colonoscopy a few years ago and they were really helpful when we rang for advice.
I think the main thing to remember is they want the bowel as empty as possible even to the extent of not having any milk or cream.

I believe certain foods are not allowed simply because of the colour! If you google low residue diet, that's what I was told when I had mine. Having the low residue diet means his "clear out" procedure will be slightly less explosive also, so definitely worth it - picolax isn't what I would call pleasant

Ring the Dept where DH will be having the procedure and tell them that their advice isn't clear enough!
Hope all goes as well as possible …...

Thanks so much ladies, as always really helpful advice.
BJ - hubby loves bovril and the barley sugar and lucozade are a great idea
HB, thanks for the list, off shopping in a short while
Yes, Limpy, I did read that about the dark colours. Makes sense I guess
CJ - I googled low residue diet and it was very imformative ( no idea why my brain didn't think of that - I usually google everything!)
He has 10 tablets and 2 sachets to down tomorrow and is not leaving the house!!
CLKD - no need for me to phone, I am clear now ( as will hubby be by Wednesday! - sorry TMI!)
I will let you all know how he gets on, thanks again :thankyou: (http://:thankyou:) PN x x

Good luck for Wednesday!
Not quite sure how to put this but it may be worth hubby taking some spare undies on Wed.
As I remember it the timing was quite critical for getting things empty and arriving for the colonoscopy.
Spare undies weren't needed, but it wasn't, er, relaxing :-\
Sorry if TMI.......

Also some cream for sore bum and wet wipes for the loo.
Oh poor thing, and men are not generally good sufferers ::)

Blimey, thanks HB. Yes he is a bit worried HB but has been having problems so wants to get to the bottom of it (no pun intended!)
Fingers crossed CLKD
Thanks ladies

Purplynanny forgot to say. If it's not too late, get some Sudocreme as the clearing out procedure can make your botty quite sore. Sorry, should have said yesterday - brainfart!
-
Mine was just haemorrhoids, hope his is too xx

Thanks BJ, not too late, I have some from the grandchildren nappy days. Good advice.

All done and dusted. Hubby did really well and managed to control his anxiety, which amazed me. Not a very nice thing to go through and poor love was starving. He has also never drank so much water in his life!! The sedation didn't work so well and he had a few areas of painful moments, but got through it well.
We could have done without it be the hottest ever day, especially as the hospital air con failed!!
Results were good, just showed diverticulitis, which was diagnosed in 2008, so no surprise. Got to see gp next week for follow up, but nothing sinister found and I cannot tell you how relieved we both are.
Thanks for all your tips, the lucozade, wipes and sudocream most especially!

I had 3 colonoscopies and a number of 'clear outs' for my cancer treatment. The list of food I am supposed to eat for the treatment is everything I shouldn't be eating for the cancer - white bread, sugary stuff, processed food, carbonated drinks. I have to say I take little notice of this and keep to healthy eating, but just keep clear of some of the very high fibre stuff like pulses. It hasn't been an issue at all, everything comes out in the way it should (and quickly too !).
I've actually found colonoscopies amazing, I love to see my insides on screen. I've never been very photogenic so I tend to look better from the inside ;D
Glad it wasn't anything too sinister!
