He was well respected as a man and as a politician. A great loss to Scottish politics.

Yes he was an alcoholic and gained a lot of respect for being very honest about it.

Great guy. And he will be very sadly missed.

Such a shame.
He was that very rare creature, an honest, trustworthy politician.

He was a gentleman, loved by many for being down to earth. Whether his death was alcohol related remains to be seen. Apparently losing his seat at the election hit him badly.

He's been in politics for many years and I suspect he didn't expect to lose his seat. I have such respect for people who overcome such challenges as alcoholism and are honest. It shows such strength.

My Mum had a stroke after the death of several people, family and close friends, despite having normal blood pressure before. She went emotionally off the rails. Look after yourselves when faced with trauma.

It's a sad tale. He lost his father in April this year and then after 30 odd years in politics he lost his seat.
Perhaps the stress of all of that was just enough to have such a sad result.

He leaves a ten year old son called Donald.

So sad.  He was a true Scotsman, honest, caring about his constituency and the people around him.

It's something he will remember forever. What a wonderful thing for his mum to do.

Post mortem was inconclusive, so more tests are necessary. No closure for family yet.  :'(
