Nope.  You could show it to a Pharmacist for advice but certainly make an appt. with a chiropodist!

toe nail fungus does not normally cause any sensory symptoms they just look yuk!   Good advice show it to pharmacist or your GP.

My husband has got fungus in his big toenail and the only treatement the gp could give was 6 month course of very strong anti fungal tablets that can badly affect your liver ( happened to a friend) so he saw private chiropodist who told him which paint on treatment to buy as only a couple are effective and he has been using it daily for 3 months and his toe is huge amount better but he must use it for a year to be sure of a cure.

Nothing got shot of mine - started in one toe nail and spread to the others. GP gave up and told me to paint over them with nail varnish.  ::)

Someone told me to rub Vick Vapour rub into my toe nail, which I thought was really strange but it worked.  Really looking forward to wearing sandals this Summer and varnished nails.

Tea tree oil has so many uses. Hubby used it on his toe as advised by a chiropodist, problem is all gone.

I used to rinse my kids hair with water and tee tree oil.....they never got head lice at school, so it works for both ends   ;D

I think I might have had tingling sensations with mine.  Thankfully it has all healed up.  The chiropodist showed me how to remove the 'dead' skin, flaking skin from all around the nail with a small metal file that he gave me and to keep feet uncovered as much as possible.  He suggested letting them air dry and not to pat with a towel as this sends the fungus deeper.  Advised I use tea tree oil neat on the nails (all of them, not just the infected one) every day.  I did do this religiously for about a month and then infrequently, eventually the fungus went away.  Good luck :)

I HATE the smell of tea tree oil  ::) - but sitting with feet in a bowl of warm water really appeals  ;)

What did you decide to do?

Countrybumkin what was the name of the product that your husband used? Can we buy it or is only on prescription??

I've just bought some tea tree oil after reading this post - stupid question but do I have to take all my varnish off before applying it and do you apply it to the actual nail, underneath the nail or both?

Not sure about the rest of it but I know you have to take off your nail varnish so that whatever you paint on the nail will sink in. I've tried lots of stuff over the years but never tea tree so will follow your nail story with interest... slowly... as it can take a year apparently .....  ;D

It did take almost a year for mine to completely clear up, partly that new nail takes ages to grow. I just put a few drops of tea tree on a cotton wool pad and wiped each nail. Definitely worth the effort

I've heard that GPs are reluctant to (or won't) prescribe treatments for nail fungus anymore. The oral tablets can affect your liver and the paint-on treatments take forever to work (if they do work). Also the fungal spores are in our shoes, carpets etc so re-infection is pretty well inevitable. The advice to paint toenails with a dark nail varnish seems to be the best practical advice. Sorry!

That advice is ok until the fungus begins to destroy the nail itself  :(

It needs sorting!  Speak to a Pharmacist for advice?

I tried all of the painting on thingies and in the end the doctor gave up and told me to just varnish over it - about three years ago now I think. Of course it spread gradually to all of the nails and two of them are disappearing. I didn't want to take the tablets as I react to lots of things and the GP wasn't keen on them either. Lots about it here http://www.patient.co.uk/health/fungal-nail-infections-leaflet

I haven't seen the adverts relating to nail fungus lately ………… it was enough to put me off supper  ::) and fungus is known to spread - spores like fungi of course.  Mycil was the powder 'of the day'!

How did you use the cider vinegar prajna? How bad was the infection - crumbly ruined nail or just getting started? How long did the vinegar take to work? Many thanks

Might try the mouthwash next! http://www.top10homeremedies.com/how-to/how-to-get-rid-of-toenail-fungus.html  :)

It takes as long as the nail takes to grow out normally. It can take a year for a toenail to totally grow from base to tip. Now and again mine has got better while on a long course of antibiotics for something else.

It will Taz but won't get rid of the under-lying condition which is a fungus = mushrooms, which thrive in damp conditions.  Mycil powder.  Anything that will kill the fungus but keep the toe dry.  If the nail bed is damaged then it will take longer to sort the problem.  How about a verruca paint?

No I used it neat. I tried the stuff from the doctors for eighteen months and then the tea tree and then the cider vinegar. I've covered them up. Left them uncovered. Varnished them and unvarnished them. What started off seven years ago with one toe has now spread to all of them on one foot and one on the other foot. I'm ok in the winter when they are all covered up in public it's just in the summer I really have a look at them and despair!! I haven't treated them at all for the last two years.

The condition thrives in damp conditions so wearing socks and boots/wellies will encourage the fungus to spread.

Thinking laterally, it's a 'thrush'-type chronic condition: have you tried one of the products for that?

Really recommend a trip to a chiropodist that can show you how to keep them clean. It's not nice but if you remove the 'debris', continue with the tea tree and let the air get to them, it will take time but I'm certain things will improve.

I had to scrape the sides of the nails, file down the thickened nail and generally keep removing the affected crumbly material. Eventually the fungus 'lost its grip'. I also only used the same towel to clean feet with and patted them dry, if you rub I was told it sends the fungus deeper.

On another note, drinking apple cider vinegar might take care of any candida you might have in your system that might contribute to the happy home for fungus. :) it's a real pain to deal with

As is honey  ;) but I wouldn't dunk my toes in to a pot, would rather drink it: talking of 'pots', have you tried soaking toes in urine?

My husband has had his fungus toes for a couple of years and we've spent a fortune on various treatments to no avail. The latest is laser treatment which has cost close to £500! His nails still look awful but 2 weeks since the final treatment and we will just have to wait and see. My brother had a similar thing some years ago and was prescribed some kind of antibiotic for 9 months and it went away!

Well, I've been suing tea-tree oil for a month now and it does seem to be working.  When I get out of the shower I file across the top of my nail while it's still damp then dab the oil over the nail and under the cut edge.  It was quite dark under the nail discolouration, that is almost gone now.  I'll keep using it but reckon it will take a while to go as the nail needs to grow out....thanks for the suggestion ladies  :)

Hm, had a bit of a toenail malfunction!  I was clipping my nails on Sunday when I noticed a crack down the infected nail.  Of course I can never leave anything like that alone so had a bit of a prod and a poke and now the top 2/3 of my nail has come off!  There is a little bit left on one side but it's quite loose.  I'm off for my monthly chiropodist appointment later this afternoon so hopefully she can sort it out a bit.  It doesn't hurt, just looks a bit weird.  Has this happened to anyone else?

Had it in both large toenails for years and tried just about everything. Teatree oil, Vicks, vinegar, foot soaks, etc., only thing that stopped it was one of those laundry bleach pens used after i cut back the nail low. (yes I know I'm bad...hehehe) :o

Someone doing a pedicure last week said to soak them in mouthwash. She didn't say what one so I don't know if it has to have specific ingredients. I said I was thinking of going to a chiropodist about it and she said, they will only soak them in mouth wash.
