Title: Utrogestan Questions
Post by: debq on April 28, 2015, 09:13:03 AM
Hi, I posted here a month ago feeling very miserable due to my HRT and it was suggested I go on Utrogestan.  My doctor agreed to prescribe it along with Elleste Solo, and I must say I am feeling much better, and almost normal.  :)   However, I have a couple of questions.  Rather than try and work out a cycle (I'd not had a real period for over a year at that point, just breakthrough bleeding last year), she told me to just start taking them both immediately.  Within two days I started a massive period which went on for a week, very painful, huge bloating, heavy bleeding, the reason why I saw a specialist two years ago (at which time I was taking Tranexamic acid to try to reduce the heavy bleeds).

My first question is that I am taking one tablet daily as prescribed, but I notice the leaflet says to take two tablets.  Is it a mistake by my Doctor, or is it usual to take one despite the instructions?  My second question is, is it possible take Utrogestan like the pill and carry on taking it so as not to have a period?  I don't think I can go back to days of having such heavy periods, they are just too debilitating.  I'm due to see my Doctor again on Friday, so if I can suggest something I would be happier.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Debq and welcome

What mg of estrogen has been prescribed to you 1 mg or 2mg and what strength is the Estelle solo ? That should explain what the dosage your gp prescribed. By taking the two together you shouldn't have a period at all i.e. continuous utrogestron, progesterone, means no period. Your new regime will take time to settle into though . How old are you or are you post meno as you can't take it continuously unless no normal bleed for a year or over 54 .

Hi Dazned

The Elleste Solo is 2mg, the Utrogestan is 100mg.  I'm 52, and have been on some sort of HRT for almost two years.  Apart from some breakthrough bleeding last August when I had a mirena coil in, I've not had a real period for over 18 months.  I can't go back to those days either.  :-\

You are meant to take 2x100mg of Utrogestan per day if used sequentially - I think you are doing the continuous regime.  For some reason they stopped doing the 200mg Utrogestan but didn't change the leaflets to instruct you to take 200mg.  If you take Utrogestan continuously (you need to be over 54 or periods have stopped for at least a year) then you can take 100mg each day.   DG x
