One of the main symptoms of my peri menopause has been massive mood swings of late. I can spend all day feeling in the depths of despair, really so low and also anxious. Go to bed. Then wake up the next morning feeling like a totally different person. Calm and cheerful and optimistic. Though physically I feel very drained and weak, like I need to recuperate on the sofa all day with a bowl of soup and a box set (fat chance of that happening).
My GP assures me that my HRT will help 'smooth out' these massive mood swings to a large extent. Still some dips, obviously. But nowhere near as severe as I have been having recently.
What has been your experience of HRT smoothing out your mood swings (presuming you have them).

Hi since I've been on HRT I feel about 70% better but still have mood swings and anxiety n other symptoms I've been on HRT since November 2014

Thanks Amanda.
Do you find there is a pattern to your mood swings now?

I have been on hrt for just five months but it has certainly made my mood swings much better. Prior to hrt I was a grumpy, irrational blubbering wreck. Now I do have more regular bleeds and yes I still get pmt but not as bad. I also seem to have a weepy, sensitive phase after my bleed finishes but my moods are not the dark despair that I felt before. I have more energy generally whereas I has complete exhaustion. My bleeds have been consistent rather than heavy or light. My hot flushes and night sweats are improved although not gone. I think the things I would have liked to see improved are the associated anxiety and loose bowels. Apparently my scan showed bowel changes consistent with meno so maybe I am stuck with is now. I also note that I am worse in the mornings which may reflect pill taking at breakfast! Hrt for me has helped as I am only 41 with a full time clinical job and three very young children to juggle. I am resigned to stopping the hrt later in life when I may be able to reduce work hours and compete with my then teenage children over who can rant/rage most lol.

Hi Chocolate
Thanks for that. I don't expect my mood swings to stop entirely (I'm not that lucky) but I would be very grateful if they were reduced in their severity. I wear an oestrogen patch so don't take a tablet in the morning, but I do still feel prickles of anxiety the moment I wake up, sometimes severely, sometimes barely noticed.
I also hope that my mood swings go back to following a more predictable pattern again, just before I start my bleed etc. I have been so up and down recently that it's exhausting.

Oh I see you have loose bowels too? I had that. But wasn't sure whether it was the anxiety causing it, or whether it something caused by hormones? Haven't had it for a few days now, which is a relief.

At there worst yes mine revolve around my cycle but don't disappear fist day of bleeds my start about week n half before my cycle and ease a bit about 9/12 after bleed before HRT life was hell I still suffer but no where near as much as I did x
