Title: BBC Morning programme
Post by: Dancinggirl on March 10, 2015, 02:01:35 PM
I just caught the end of a good interview about women having to stop work because of menopause symptoms.  I think it was in regard to a report about older women in the work place and they were highlighting the taboo around menopause and the need for employers to more aware and sympathetic. There was a GP also there who said that despite all the scare stories HRT was actually quite safe and was one option that women could try.
At last we are getting some recognition that this part of our lives is seriously challenging. It was pointed out that if women were supported better then it would be a great benefit for the economy.

Lets stop calling it the "CHANGE" then.

Its almost said in a Les Dawson'esque mouthed whisper!  ;D

"Oh Margaret is going thru the Change"
As if mouthing the word "Change" somehow protects you from the same fate...

No - stop - its not funny anymore.  >:(

It was so good to not hear any jokes about it in this normally light hearted radio programme.
Was a bit of a short part of the show (blink and you missed it)  ???

sorry I was listening to a radio programme on same morning DG.

Still applies in general. The sooner we stop trying to talk about "IT" under our breaths the sooner we get this more understood.

Absolutely Peegee - the less taboo it is the better. I think that was why I liked this section on the BBC TV morning show - they were emphasising the need to help women come forward about their problems and not feel embarrassed. I think the GP mentioned that only 10-15 % of women go to their GPs for help? She mentioned there are treatments and that HRT was a relatively safe option despite all the scare stories.

I do think that our 50s are a time of 'Change' - but in many, many ways - so you are right that to use this term to just apply to the menopause is wrong.  Men go through a lot of changes in their 50s - it's often the time that heart and prostate problems start to emerge.

I can sense that there is a slow awakening to the problems of the meno and if it has an impact on the economy and society as a whole (as I think it does) there is good reason to address the need to support women better through this stage.  DG x

How about the "progression" :)

Agree with the doc on the number of people just not even going to the docs, quite frightening really.

Was it similar to this prog?
BBC Radio Scotland's lifestyle programme has aired a feature about the menopause and how you deal with it in the workplace.

It was a shame that there was no mention of younger ladies going through meno missed opportunity.

I saw it and thought it was funny when the brilliant lady who was doing the talks to companies said " menopause is pmt on speed "  ;D. Overall it was an excellent piece of reporting... not patronising just enlighting.
