Title: Perimenopause and lower abdo pain.
Post by: Chocolatechaos on January 13, 2015, 07:54:13 PM
Hi, I am new to the forum having been recommended to visit by my gp. I have just recently been diagnosed with perimenopause based on symptoms and rising fsh levels (>30). My symptoms have been irregular cycles (22-114 days), migraine type headaches, dizziness, brain fog, overwhelming rage/tears, anxiety, palpitations, bowel changes pos with menstrual pains, indigestion, bloating, fatigue, no drive, aches, sensitive bladder, hot flushes and sleep sweats. Blimey, my symptoms sound rubbish! I am only 40 with my mum and nan both having meno in their 40's.

I am now started on hrt having taken one month of elleste duet. I also take well women supplements with iron (low ferritin) , starflower oil and evening primrose. However, I have had three episodes of acute sharp pains in my lower pelvis area, about left ovary. This is followed by dull ache in my back and left thigh. I have just had an ultrasound scan and all looks good so no cysts or lumps. Is this pain a meno thing or maybe random ovulation pain? Has anyone else had something similar?

Thanks for reading!

:welcomemm: …….. menopause comes with all kinds of aches and pains  ::)  :-\ ……. a drop in oestrogen can cause laxity of muscles so we are more aware of our joints.  If your ultrasound is within normal limits then maybe your GP could refer you to a Gyneacologist for advice?

Have a browse of the menus, left of screen.  We have a funny room too ;-)

Hi there- I have had exactly the same pain on and off since peri meno. In fact I can feel it as I type this! I've had a couple of vaginal ultrasounds and all looks fine so always just considered it to be 'one of those things' . I seem to get lots of aches and pains at odd times! I'm 43 and been on hrt for nearly 2 yearsxx

This has jogged me memory, I was never aware of ovulating but I remember sometimes when sitting I could feel an ache behind the pelvic bone, deeply inside.

Thank you for your replies. Maybe this is a strange perimeno pain after all. The ultrasound also ruled out bowel issues and my renal function was fine. I don't have any urine infections either so it is an unidentified pain!! I am under my gp for this so far, do I need to be under a gynaecologist? Thanks to this forum I have learnt so much about the menopause.

Hi and welcome to MM Chocolatechaos
I had a premature menopause and had to start HRT when I was 37.  You do need the HRT to protect your heart and bones and all those horrid meno symptoms should reduce considerably over the next few weeks.  If the HRT you have been given doesn't suit you (some of the progesterone types can give PMT type symptoms) then it's worth trying some others - e.g. Femoston, which is very well tolerated by many women.
I suspect the abdominal pain may have been more to do with the bowels and I find HRT really helps with this but it takes time for everything to settle.
Keep us posted about your progress.
Good luck  DG x

Your symptoms are EXACTLY what freaked me out nearly 4 years ago, and mine were POST menopause! Looking back, with the knowledge of this site now, I know mine starting to "trickle" in about 6 years before. I always have low pelvic pain, bit like a stitch, and have had many, many negative tests without resolution, but know that I have bad Vulvodynia/vaginal atrophy and, newly for me, IBS, all of which cause the ligaments to pull up tight in spasm, a bit like the opposite of pregnancy! It affects the back, hip, groin and ribs, and for me causes twitching in the muscles. I have posted about this many times, but now have learnt to accept it, sort of! Before I understood, I had such anxiety thinking I was dying of a weird disease, as like most women on this site, had no idea of the devastation, both mental and physical, that hormone depletion could cause, and was equally appalled at the lack of clinical knowledge to reassure me.

Amitriptyline does help the physical side of pain, but can "zonk" you out, good for sleep though! I take Venlafaxine for mental clarity, which has worked really well, but can't take the two together. I am also on a low dose HRT patch, but think I need to increase it a bit, as I notice some of the old symptoms creeping back in!

We all need a different recipe to get us through this, but I just wanted to let you know that many of us have the same symptoms as you. You are very young still, so hopefully, when the worst is over, you will have coped better than someone like me!!

Thinking of you, as completely understand!
