yep, that bread-based meal many eat at breakfast. How hard can it be to make a slice of toast ::) but over the years, DH and I have had a scoring system when in B&B, Hotels etc.; 1-5 ; because it really does come out of the kitchen in various colours and shades ;D : and 2-night, DH burnt my toast before he managed to get the cheese over it ::) ……
-
My gran always said a bit of burnt toast/charcoal was good for you but maybe that was her excuse.
I bought my grandson a 'toast stamp' of a dinosaur shape to use before toasting - something similar might make hotel/b&b toast more interesting ?
-
I think it's because toast is often made in up-right machines which take lots of slices …….. in and out, placed on the plate and into the dining room, well this eater sends it back if there's any evidence of bread rather than toast ;D
-
I hate those rotating toasters you get in establishments serving buffet style breakfasts. You have to put the bread in about 2/3 times to get anything resembling toast.
-
Do you grill all your toast CLKD ?
In hotels i wonder how many times the toast that isn't eaten comes back out for the next customer.
we have an open fire and an old brass toasting fork - not done it for ages but love toasted bread done over glowing coals.
-
Marshmallows!!!!!! Never mind the toast. ;D
-
Crumpets - our coals are about right by 11.00 p.m. ::) - but the toasting fork is too short! :o don't marshmallows melt?
I often wonder about re-cycled toast ;D :-X ….. as if ……..
We use a grill pan every morning ……… but Himself will wander off >:(

When my Dad was a boy, he and his family lived in Epsom. One of his abiding memories from childhood was my Gran's burnt toast. Every day she burnt it and every day she would stand by the back door, going "scrape, scrape, scrape" until it was vaguely presentable for the breakfast table. The finished result, with presumably one or two charred bits still remaining on each slice, was called "Epsom toast" - which my Dad still calls burnt toast to this day............. ;)
-
Charcoal is supposedly good for us ::) ……….
-
I was prescribed charcoal biscuits for IBS as a teenager. Disgusting things! Absorbs wind? Mum should have just burnt the toast! Much cheaper.
-
;D we used to buy charcoal Bonios for the dogs ……… we ate them as kids ::)
I don't like burnt toast ……. it has to be 'right' :D
-
Burnt toast these days is thought to be carcoigenic (sp).
My daughter likes warmed up bread and my son likes it burned. I like it in the middle.
When my daughter was small she had a dreadful appetite. I gave her tubby toast as per the Telly Tubbies. All I did was toast the bread and then use a cookie cutter and make it round. ;D. She happily ate that but would not eat a square slice.
The things you do for kids ;D

I'm with your daughter HB. Lightly toasted at most. Hubby changes settings, then pings toast, turns it, pings it..... drives me insane. If he'd just leave it in until it's toasted it would be fine, but no.
Youngest GD won't eat crusts, so chomps her way round & leaves them on the plate. Mind you as a child I hated dark crust on plain bread, toasted was even worse. :sick02:
-
I'm forever burning toast as hubby keeps changing the settings. He likes dark and I forget to reset it.
His and her toasters required ;D

Same with me Libby ;D (http://;D)

I am fond of toast, prefer it to bread. I also prefer it done under a grill rather than a toaster. I like it well done but not burnt. Hubby's is like hot bread by comparison.
And I am a fan of Marmite on my toast, or marmalade, or boiled egg with toast soldiers :)
-
My hubby and son love Marmite, daughter and I hate it ;D
I don't like bread that much at all to be honest. It's just something I eat because I can't think of anything better.
White or brown......brown and seeded for me.

I like seeded bread, but toast has to be white.
-
Like white toast hot & dripping in butter but brown toast cold with marmalade.
I love bread. Not eating much of it at the moment as I'm doing slimming world and it's not a Free food.

How was your weigh in Dyan? I put on about 4lbs over Christmas. Mostly try to avoid toast...I like it too much!
-
Beat you there PN. I put on 4 1/2lbs ;D
I went to the weigh in thinking 5 so I didn't feel too bad.
Now trying the new extra easy SP plan to see if that shifts the extra christmas weight quickly.
It's meant to turbo boost your weight loss........watch this space ;D
-
;D (http://;D)
I am sure it will soon come off Dyan. I don't do a particular regime. ..just need to stop eating so much! Would like to lose another stone and half but it won't be easy!
-
Smaller plates? Weighing a daily amount …….. put the amounts on to a plate in the fridge so that at the end of the day ;) ……..
Toast has to be white bread. Hot toast and HP Sauce?
-
If I could it would be hot, white toast with lashings of butter. Vitalite just ain't the same.
-
Take it or leave it to be honest. I do like a panini or a soda scone but bread just leaves me a bit cold. I think it's down to years of doughy sandwiches.
It's one of those things I just end up eating through laziness. Toast has to be brown though and I'm not that keen on butter either.
Bit weird....that's me ;D

we are making tomato soup for lunch tomorrow, french toast could go with it very well :)

Is that eggy bread ……….
I LOVE toast with fresh dripping sprinkled with salt, we had Old Black Spot roast last week and there was dripping ….. but as with anything I eat, I have to 'fancy' it or :-X
-
Same thing CLKD. Eggy bread/French Toast.
-
Is French toast cooked on 1 side only?
-
No both sides. Really nice.
-
(Serves 2)
2 tbsp clarified butter (ghee), melted
2 large eggs
2 tsp granulated sugar, plus extra to sprinkle
¼ tsp salt
Pinch of ground cloves
Pinch of ground mace
Pinch of ground nutmeg
¼ tsp ground cinnamon
Finely grated zest of ½ lemon (optional)
2 tsp plain flour
2 x 2cm-thick slices of stale, good-quality white bread
Melt one tablespoon of the clarified butter and set aside. Beat the eggs in a wide, shallow bowl, and then whisk in the melted butter, the sugar, salt, spices and zest, if using. Stir a little of this into the flour to make a paste, then beat back into the egg mixture until smooth.
Heat the remaining butter in a frying pan over a medium-high heat. Meanwhile, soak the bread in the egg mixture for about 30 seconds a side until soft but not floppy. Put in the hot pan and allow to cook undisturbed for about two minutes until golden and crisp.
Turn and cook for about a minute or a little more on the other side, then put on to plates, sprinkle with sugar and serve with indecent haste.

Wikiipedia says:
"French toast, also known as eggy bread,[1] gypsy toast,[2] or omelette bread is a dish of bread soaked in beaten eggs and then fried.
"When French toast is served as a sweet dish, milk, sugar, vanilla or cinnamon are also commonly added before pan-frying, and then it may be topped with sugar (often powdered sugar), butter, fruit, or syrup. When it is a savory dish, it is generally fried with a pinch of salt, and can then be served with a sauce such as ketchup or mayonnaise.[3][better source needed] .... "
:sick02: ......... I eat mine plain, or with butter or with honey .......
-
Oops! Just burnt my cheese on toast. :(
