My singing teacher has just rung to let me know I got a distinction for my grade 3 singing exam!  :)

Oh congratulations, well done  :congrats:

a few years ago I learned the treble recorder and took Grade 3. I got a distinction for that, which I never got in any of my piano exams. It gives a real morale boost.  :)

Well done, Ju Ju!!   Your singing must really be going from strength to strength.   I was wondering if you'd heard, the other day, and I'm thrilled for you.   Are you doing any singing over Christmas?   If you are, you'll have that lovely "I did it!" feeling!    :medal:

Thank you! I've got a frame ready for the certificate.  :)

Hopefully I shall get to the last 3 Christmas gigs, Dulciana. Wasn't well enough for the last one, but they are very understanding. Pesky gall stones.

My friend who has started lessons at age 71 took her grade 1 and got a distinction as well. She was told she should never sing at school by a teacher and believed them. Has a beautiful voice.

perhaps I could learn then, I was told the same at school, backed up with being told I am tone deaf.  I always struggled with the aural part of my piano exams.  I would dearly love to be able to sing  :whist:

I could.  Until I had 2 lots of surgery in quick succession.  Being intubated spoiled my vocal chords  :-X

BJ, if you really want to then you can. It does take a while to find your voice and tone etc., then if you want to, take the exams. I found the discipline of working towards something makes me work harder, but another friend , just a bit older is learning but has decided not to go the exam route. I find the aural side difficult, particularly as I never had the chance to learn how to read music as a child. I think my teacher made the assumption that I knew more than I did as I managed to wing it in the exams, but we have now gone back to basics to fill in some gaps. This will give me confidence as it gets harder. I was even confused about names and qualities of notes and time signatures. Some things I find easy, for example I have natural pitch apparently, but I find timing difficult.

CLKD, that is sad. Can you not sing at all? Do you miss it or can you be philosophical about it? You are alive and there are so many other things that give you joy perhaps?

I can read music Ju Ju and I have done theory exams, its just lack of confidence in the strength and tone of voice. I realise correct breathing plays a big part.  I would not want to do exams - too great a stress, but recreationally, perhaps I could.

thanks, I may well look into it next year  :thankyou:

And I've made friends along the way in mine, which is great. I've learnt a lot. Our choir was set up for people who have never sung before to those who have loads of experience and everything in between. There's a wonderful feeling to be contributing to a great sound.

Anybody watch it?  What a super sound they all make together.  And 8-part Holst -  Gareth's Malone's brave to tackle something like that.  Mind you, the first run-through they all had of that piece showed that they could all do it.  And Elgar's "The Snow" is beautiful, isn't it?  I'm so impressed with Gareth;s ability to bring out the best in all the singers he's worked with.  And now, to see him working with the cream of all the MW choirs is fantastic, isn't it?

Sorry I missed that. I went out this evening.

Had a singing lesson this afternoon. We've gone right back to basics with music theory. I knew I had gaps of knowledge, but there's a lot of basic stuff I don't know that I didn't know that I didn't know if that makes sense.  8)

My teacher had the certificate and the examiners notes, which were wonderful to read.  :)

It's that old thing about needing to have grade 5 theory in the bag before doing grade-6-anything.  I did a crash course to it before doing my grade 6 piano, in a group run by my Mum.  Oh, the pressure! ;)

Got a way to go before that, but if I put the work in now it should help. We've gone back to grade 1! The singing bit is almost easier compared! My singing teacher has had loads of teaching experience with children, but not with adults. I've been a bit of a guinea pig! It's easy to make assumptions about someone's knowledge or in my case the lack of! Incidentally, I did very well in the theory, as I was able to wing it! But that won't be possible on the higher grades.

1 had to have Grade 5 before 1 could apply to the Royal College of Music, by which time 1 had Grade 8.  Never got that far, fell in LOVE first  ;D

Why were they making an issue over an 8-part?  We often sung harmony, 'rounds', etc.; from the age of 8 : as they were really getting it together I said to DH that when I was singing like that, secure enough with my piece, when I listened to those around me - that there is nothing better than suddenly realising how good a sound we were making.  :-*

I think the next episode is C.mas sometime ……..

I love it when Christmas from one of the Cambridge colleges includes Once In Royal David's City and it starts with the solo boy treble, who is then joined by the choir in full harmony.   :)

I've opted out of the rest of the choir's carol singing. It's all too much and I've had it by evening. Still there's always next year. I'll have to watch telly. I have this wonderful recording of a German girls choir, originally recorded in the 1950s. Makes Christmas for me.

I keep scrolling past this thread and thinking someone is actually singing their exam results as in "you got an AAAAAAA tra la la".
I know, I know, I'm bonkers  ;D

CLKD! Eight part harmony is incredibly difficult - I imagine even for an experienced choir!!! Even more so because some of these women do not read music and also their range is much closer together so even more important that they know their part so they don't wander off into someone elses! This would be less likely ( wandering off your part) in a mixed voice choir... also there are only 100 of them so not that many for each part!

I watched this on i-player and it is one of his better Choir programmes/projects. I found the stories of the military wives very moving and it's a life I know nothing about. Being auditioned from 2000 choir members they are obviously all experienced and good singers but the sound was amazing!

Ditto the Christmas carols CLKD - not religious at all (but was brought up in it) but love to sing them!

Hurdity   :) x

Old sheep, I shall have to compose a song tra la la did a!

I shall give my parents the comments from the examiner and the end of term report from my singing teacher to my parents to read. They will make better reading than my old school reports!  ;D

Ju Ju - I hope that they appreciate your Hard Work!

I didn't read music well.  But we were taught early on our parts alone followed by joining it all up.  Seemed natural to me: and switching off my own and listening in to the others was a real buzz. 'wandering off' is a good expression  ;)

Absolutely, Hurdity!   And Gareth juggling all those parts in his head, too, not just when he's standing in front of the choir but also when he's preparing the music before the rehearsal - well done, him!

BTW, re. the Christmas carols - it's well worth a ponder over some of the words (Hark The Herald, for example............).
