Title: Xmas food bargains
Post by: honeybun on December 07, 2014, 07:33:28 PM
Anyone got any recommendations.

I bought a Gressingham Duck from Aldis this week.....fresh not frozen. It was £6.95. Given the fact that supermarkets are selling two duck breasts for £7 it was a real bargain . I butchered it and had the breasts for dinner tonight. Still got the legs to use. I think I will buy another one next week.

Anyone seen anything that stands out as a real bargain.

Not yet, still got Aldi, Iceland & Lidls to hit yet. I'm waiting until a bit nearer the time.

Lidl have lots of unusual meats and birds and all seem really reasonable.

I fancy the three bird roast, £9.99 I think. Might go for the partridge as well, but cant remember how much that one is.

Iceland have bargains of party platters. Big box for £5. Some small packs are only £1 each. I bought some & managed to get a 4 bird roast for £10. Hubby's a happy bunny about the roast as he really fancies one this year.
One question, can the left over meat be reheated for Boxing Day?

Lidl has champagne for £10. Haven't tried it yet but might this weekend. Not strictly food though, sorry  ;D

Have had some pretty good wines out of Lidl. So sure it will be fine.

The chocolate from Lidl is lovely, they do some chocolate covered marzipan discs at the moment with a liqueur filling, they are gorgeous. Also chocolate covered gingerbread hearts with an apricot filling. Mini stollen bites, all absolutely lovely and as cheap as chips! The brand is Favorina.

I work for a London wine merchant, I have taken a look at the Lidl wines, there are some really excellent wines from great producers and good vintages, all at really good prices.

Also, they do Nespresso type capsules, they were on offer at 89p for 10 last week, I think they are normally £1.99 for 10. Nespresso capsules are 29p each. They are really lovely, I preferred them to the Nespresso ones.

Ooh and forgot, the Lidl luxury mince pies, the brand is Snowy Lodge, are really nice. I think they won a Good Housekeeping taste test.

They also did a blind tasting of champagne on The One Show, it was Harrods vs either Lidl or Aldi and the Lidl/Aldi one won.

Have stocked up on the gingerbread hearts with apricot filling also the iced ones, love them as they remind of Christmas in Germay.

Going to stock up on continental chocolate too so much better then Cadburys, never buy that now tastes awful.

Bought a bottle of cream sherry in Lidl today for £5.99 - I usually have Harvey's Bristol Cream. Just waiting until 6.00 to try it - one has to practice restraint  ;). Will report back xx

   …………

We try to grow as much fruit/veg as we can, or buy from local farms.  Pheasants bought from the local Game Dealer on Tuesday and in the freezer ready for C.m Day.  Beef will be purchased from local butcher ready for B.Day; probably be either Highlander or Long Horn

I buy tins of bu  :o :   [how do you spell biscuits ……. there]; for the people who drive the dustcarts in the Sales.  I get them biscuits at Easter too, they are always sociable what ever time of year and what ever the weather is throwing at them.

Ok, confused now probably due to too much chocolate.

Who drives dustcarts in the sales?  Are we talking about bin men. If so I give mine some money attached to the bin lid. They come around 7 am and I never see them. My postman gets an envelope too.

She bought biscuits in sales to give to the drivers of the dustcarts, I think!

Mine don't get anything. Service is rubbish  ;D and they haven't a kind word to say. As for postman he gets the Mr Grumpy award.  I used to give to milkman, paper boy etc, but as I now purchase these at supermarket, no tips.

This is not a bargain by any stretch of the imagination but it is delicious. I have just come back from Bluewater Shopping Centre and they were giving away samples of Baileys - they stamp your hand so you can't keep going back  ;D  I tried the chocolate one, made with Belgian chocolate and it was amazing. It is called Baileys Chocolat Luxe. I hadn't seen it before but I bought some. I could open it now to be honest but I'll have a cup of tea instead  ;)

Too sweet and sticky for me although I have tried really hard to like this kind of thing  ;D
I am one of the strange ones that like really dry drinks. Dry wine and very dry sherry.
I don't like spirits though. Gave up on them years ago as I thought it was ridiculous to try and disguise the taste of something with a soft drink  :o. I just don't like the taste at all.

Oh no, even if I could, I'd never manage it at breakfast. I struggle to eat before 9am at best of times & certainly couldn't consume something really sweet.  I'm a Martini girl, shaken or stirred.  ;D

Maybe a slug in my morning coffee :)

We go to Costa quite often and I almost always had their Belgium Hot chocolate it really tastes like the hot chocolate you get in France or Vienna.

I was really upset when the Barista who always made it for me, said they would not be serving it anymore and that no one else ever asked for it ::)I could not believe it.

Their other hot chocolate taste insipid in comparison.

The hot chocolate you get in Venice and Barcelona is like that, just thick molten chocolate  ;) the chocolate Baileys in nighttime cocoa would ensure a good nights sleep

Aldi have Christmas Panetonne in a large black tin reduced - description Traditional Italian luxury sweet bread loaf with sultanas, candid fruits and a hazelnut topping. Bought one last week which has already gone - quite sweet but nice. Tempted to buy another this week -the tin is a good size to keep too.
